Just came out of the midnight screening (double bill with TFA).

Gut reaction is one of disappointment and feeling underwhelmed. I prefer VII by a long way. This one is too long, the new characters are all a massive let down

For the first time I am concerned that the saturation of the brand by Disney is going to leave us fans with a very sour taste in the mouth, especially when you consider that Rian Johnson is leading the charge on the new trilogy.

There was still a lot of good in there though. Hamill was excellent as was Adam Driver.

Will go into more detail tomorrow as I am running on fumes. Will be interested to hear other people's thoughts over the coming days.

Oh dear.  I thought VII was poor, so hoped a new director might make it all better.  Oh well.  I hope my cousin doesn’t make me see it with him over Christmas.
    Get schwifty.

Lots of people like it though so don't just go on what this withered old man thinks.

I really enjoyed it, everything that happened was the exact opposite of what I expected. Loved the Jedi mind trick, the opening battle was ace.

Take it with a pinch of salt though, I like all things star wars. Carry on.

I enjoyed it, while not as immediately enjoyable as VII I think it will be a better film to rewatch.

Luke was excellent and I liked the use of humour through especially the opening “phone call” gag, most of the audience laughed out loud at that one. The Yoda moment was very well handled and while there were obvious nods to Empire I felt the plot handled this better than the New Hope note by note story that Awakens retold.

Disney are going to sell shit loads of those Porg things, even I thought they were cute.

Overall, I liked it a lot, but definitely needs a rewatch.

Loved the Rey and Ren interactions. Genuinely had no idea which way it was going to go, and when he killed Snoke I thought the whole Vader Emperor thing was being recreated. But no, another misdirection.

The salt plain Hoth-a-like wasn't really the Hoth-a-like I feared when it started. Was gutted when Luke didn't just swipe all the walkers down with a gesture, but the fact he had manipulated Ren was even better.

Yoda was ace, especially when he just set that tree on fire anyway.

Also, 2 years people have been waiting for the moment that Luke takes the Lightsaber.... and he just chucks it down the cliff. Brilliant.

But like I said, I'm deluded enough to put my fingers in my ears and LALALALALA when people hate on Star Wars, I know it's a weakness but I don't give a crap. It's my thing.

Ugh, that ending. I'm just remembering it now. The Snoke thing was a waste of time. It was too similar to RotJ and ultimately he was (another) waste of a character.

Also, how did Kylo fall for Luke's cheap gag. If it was a mind trick, isn't it only supposed to work on the weak minded.

I too liked the regular use of humour at the start, Luke definitely channeling ESB-era Yoda. Ports reminded me too much of Ewoks (and why they were introduced). The Chewie/Porg scene was funny though.

Nope, don't buy a Jedi/Sith/whatever being weak minded.

It was a great swan song for Hamill though. Sad to see such a great character go though and given the tragic Real-Life circumstances, wasn't the person I wasn't expecting to go.
  • The more I thought about this, the more annoyed I got.  There were occasional moments that were excellent but the vast majority of this film was dull as dishwater.

Splitting it into three sections: 1) The chase 2) The Jedi stuff 3) the Finn sidequest

    1) This really lacked the tension that the premise requires.  It was boring and lots of it didn't really make sense.  Why did the 1st Order not just attack with fighters?  Snoke's worried about saving pilot lives all of a sudden?  Why did Admiral Purple Hair keep her plan a secret but tell other people who could put the plan into action?  Why did she sit looking at everyone being slaughtered before finally deciding to ram the bad guys?  This was boring.

    2) The Jedi stuff with Luke was far more interesting but I thought ultimately unrewarding.  Some very good moments ("reach out") but when it started to really move along we got Snoke's throwaway death and a rather odd ending for Skywalker.  Why did he project himself with a fucking haircut?  What did he even achieve by doing all that anyway?  The silver foxes would have disappeared out that hole and the rest would have run away anyway.  Pointless and weird.  The stuff with Ren and Rey was for the most part good, though with the pair of them putting in great performances.  It's not enough to save the film, though.

    3) Finn's sidequest was fucking woeful.  Christ knows how that made it to the screen.  That whole section on the casino planet needed cut.  It was prequel bad.  Another essentially pointless part of the film that did nothing for the character.  And Rose talking about saving people as the remaining rebels and blowing up in the background make her an idiot and a bad guy.  Presumably episode 9 opens with her being executed by firing squad?

There's too much shite to allow what good there is to shine through.  I was willing this to get good from very early on and for me it never happened.  When Han Solo was killed in TFA, I was shocked.  I figured it would happen due to real life circumstances with Harrison Ford.  When Luke disappeared at the end of this I thought, "You're better off out of it, mate.".

Agree 100 per cent about the casino planet stuff. I couldn't wait for it to end. The Rose character is so mind-numbingly dull that it reflected badly on Boyega's Finn.

I like that it's shit. As you were.
  • I'm not the biggest Star Wars fan (1-3 are shit, 4&5 are great, 6 is meh, 7 is fanboy meh, R1 was not bad) so I did spoiler it because I probably wont be arsed to go see it in the cinema but its sad that Luke is dead. Mark Hamill is an intriguing guy and I had hoped he would be revealed as the big bad of this trilogy (granted I was hoping to see Luke develop slight Joker touches just because).

I've always thought the Star Wars movie was hugely over rated (not bad, just over-rated) but does the disney stuff being a mixed bag and the prequels being shit take away from the reputation of the original trilogy (even if Jedi is a bit guff) ?

  • I’ve just come out from the cinema and enjoyed it greatly. Once I’m home I’ll post a bit more but although there are obvious flaws (length, lack of real fear/concern, minor characters) there were enough moments of reverence and enjoyment. It actually felt more like a 30s episodic Flash Gordon type cliffhanger than a modern AAA blockbuster.
  • I always struggle with my initial reaction to a new star wars movie, hard to separate what i hoped it would be versus judging it for what it is.

However i kind of agree with Matt.

There were some really great moments, beats where i thought this might go awesome. But then overall too much dull and stupid.

Ultimately for me, Luke is the hero of star wars...so for me i really wanted him coming back and being the big hero still. It's clear now though they're basically remaking the originals for a new generation, with a lashing of fan service for those that remember the originals. I reckon kids will prob love it.

Also i thought the commander woman took film stupid to a new low when she remained to 'steer the ship' then just stood and watched them all get shot for 30 minutes....only for rose to immediately surpass her with reckless stupid suicidal move to prevent a 'sensible' suicide mission.

Starkiller Base should have take out that casino planet last time out. Would have saved us a lot of bother.
  • I enjoyed it, Snoke got mugged off though.
  • Fucking amazing film,

Everything I wanted it from it and more, such a step up from the last one.

Clearly the best one since the original trilogy.

FA felt like a greatest hits victory lap. This had enough nods but was it’s on film.

Visually while clearly cgi heavy pisses all over Lucas’ prequels.

    And funny, Properly funny.

    9 out of 10.

Maybe just 10 minutes to long,
I like to think I'm a CAN DO kind of guy...
And the number of cans I can normally do is 12.

Ah I'm looking at the broader internet sense, you guys are alright. Just so many declaring it the greatest film to exist and so many declaring it to be absolute bilge
  • Half of those people are right.  The other half agree with Bob. ;)

Haven't watched it yet, but correct answer is utter wank
