Dead or Alive

  • So we don’t seem to have a DoA thread!??

Eurogamer don’t like the sixth instalment

Kotaku really seem to enjoy it directly contradicting them in certain places

    Anyone in?
I like to think I'm a CAN DO kind of guy...
And the number of cans I can normally do is 12.
  • No, I have access to porn.
  • It will likely have a couple of redeeming mechanics, utterly ruined by being hidden behind absolute tits and ass presentation that would make Soul Calibur blush.
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • The only one I’ve tried was DoA4 on the 360. I liked it though. Felt like a properly next-gen fighter at the time. Did not like the massive difficulty spike when you came up against the end of game boss though.

Yeah, exactly the same for me. Also fighting as a Halo Spartan was cool.
  • I wanted to play the first one on Saturn, as it was supposedly legit in a more VF than Tekken way, but it was Jpn only so I missed out. I owned the second on Dreamcast, which looked superb and played quite well, got my money's worth in multiplayer, but other than 15 minutes of wtf on the Oldbox volleyball game that's the sum total of my DOA experience.

It's a generic fighting series that has sub virtua fighter mechanics that exists on titillation. Ho hum
  • Every now and again the latest edition turns up on a console that doesn’t have any better fighters yet. Like DoA4 did. So I’m glad the series is still going.

Sorry is this meant to mean VF is bad / bottom tier? Because if so, you couldn't be further from the truth.

Side note: I had a dream last night that I was in some Scottish town meeting up with reg at a train station. No lie. I've never met Reg.

    Oh God yes.
  • Quite enjoyed Team Ninja's output on the Dreamcast and og Xbox. Not sure how they fare now but DoA2 remake and DoA3 were amazing back in the day. Sure the Hentai costumes were a bit much but the gameplay was pretty good.

  • I do like me some jiggling boobs to be fair.

I don't remember any of the outfits in DoA being as bad as the ones Laura is almost wearing in SFV.

This is a dead heat between this post and Reg's commentary on VF's mechanics for most incorrect statement itt so far.

  • I've only played DoA3 but I don't remember any of them offending my core values.

  • I dunno if it’s really any worse than paying eighty quid for the Moran edition of FH4.
  • It's twice the price of that.

That video is despressing. Mainly because there must be a sustainable number of people paying for this shite which means that will be the model for future games as more kids become used to it. Shit like this should be regulated. It’s exploitation of the worst kind.
  • DoA is a bit of a special case though because a lot of creeps like to play barbie dress up adventure and just jerk off over the characters, so it's kind of entering the shitty season pass DLC arena by proxy, because I'm sure DOA5 had a huge amount of DLc costumes and shit.
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • Serious question: Are modern fightmans generally bad for this paid DLC stuff? I can imagine a world where extra characters cost money instead of being unlocked as you play through the single player mode.
  • 100 dollars doesn't seem that bad...

Typically what happens these days is the core roster drops with your 20-30 characters and then other characters are released that you usually have to pay for. Smash Ultimate and Tekken Tag 2 would be recent exceptions to this.

It's kind of shitty I guess, because previously these characters would have been in the game and you unlock them as you play. So on the one hand, it's a fuckery. On the other hand, I have no idea what a dev team for a fighting game looks like these days in terms of size compared to other titles and really only a fraction of the initial player base at launch ever sticks around long enough to see the DLC release anyway as most people play a bit, go online, get fucked up because the big series have now been around for 20 years and the online ocean is full of sharks (or they just can't block low and get blown up by people doing Law's sweep into backflip) and then leave the game never to return because for them, the learning process is not fun. That's not a dig, that's just how it is, you aren't going to play fightmen long term realistically if you aren't the sort of player who can find enough value in the journey to make it worth their while.

I fucking adore VF and especially 3tb and 5. It was a dig at DoA. So our meeting is still on.

This. Don't get me wrong, I like me some boobies, but DoA is the worst. The objectification of women coupled with the assumption that men are all mouth-breathing idiots who'll ignore the major gameplay shortcomings as long as there are some bewbs is infuriating.

I remember EDGE gave the first Xtreme Beach Volley ball on OG Xbox something like 8/10.
