    Buy an Index you mental.

Would need a new pc too. More pressing financial needs at the moment.

Yes but it will get integration. It'll start with certain apps and then some experiences. Whether they'll make it required at some point is debatable, and probably not, but this is designed with Facebook in mind on some level. They did pay a billion dollars for the company. I suspect any multiplayer stuff will require Facebook at some point in the future, and all those games you bought will work on the next iteration, but will that rquire FB?

  • Glad to hear it’s not so obviously linked to Facebook just yet, but like SG says – the long term plans must stack up for them.

The thing I read talked about there being no way to log out of FB once you log in – apart from doing a hard reset on the device.
  • The thing is, VR and FB are such are natural fit you can see why they paid silly money for a startup. When n0face and I were playing Ironwolf the sense of standing so close to someone in a small submarine was palpable, even though you only see their headset and controllers.

  • I don’t think I want to stand next to anybody on my Facebook friends list in real life, let alone virtually.
  • As someone who doesn't have a FB account, FB VR is a terrifying prospect. This is why Oculus must ultimately die for the sake of humanity, but in the meantime it's great for general VR adoption. It's a wondeful medium in many respects, but open source plz. Index is Linux out of the box.

I don't know anything about all that but I know people are sideloading stuff and streaming Steam VR from their PCs.

Yeah. I didn't see it as a natural fit either.

Even in the most extreme future, as Facebook (or some organisation like it), you'd surely want to invest more in AR, and ingest a bucketload of realworld photography, with labelled annotations, generated by... I dunno, a game that just so happened to request your physical location immediately after loading, to display a map of cute, super collectable, cartoon characters for a geographic AR treasure hunt with no discernible practical value...

Because, there's like, no way that information is useful to advertisers...

It's the world we live in. Everything you sign up for tracks or tries to sell you stuff.

Those seriously concerned about Facebook wanting your inside leg measurement need just to create a 'fake' email account, dunno say like '[email protected].'

    Actually, don't do that one.

Tracking you and trying to sell you stuff are two distinct, albeit often overlapping things.

I take far more issue with the former than the latter.

Quest has a web browser, internal storage and can stream from a computer, so indeed it does.

  • If it did demand some sort of Facebook integration at some point, presumably you could just set up an account for that and then forget about it.

Yeah there is this I guess and we all use Google and stuff. I think though with Oculus there is a singular vision based around FB but first they must get you invested in the Oculus platform, which does make it different I think. It's more underhanded. Microsoft want to sell you games, or more precisely a gaming service, but I don't think oculus have the same vision. It is cheap though and that is currently it's most compelling factor. If you want good affordable VR right now it does it brilliantly.

  • Ace. I heard vr porn is worth checking out, if this hits £300 I may be in.
  • I am quite tempted; the one thing stopping me getting on my PSVR more often/ever is the setup palaver and the cabling.
  • JMW wrote:

Yes but it will find people you know anyway and it will try and connect you to them in as many ways as it is capable.

  • Also adverts. I know the Index is Steam and has a Steam store you can browse (but not required to purchase games - you can buy them from anyone) but if adverts start appearing it is also going in the bin.
