The books are good, but you have to accept them for what they are.

Some of the writing will make you "wince"...

It's not banal... Far from it... it's strong on detail. It is, however, undoubtedly a little blasé in places. But if you like Star Wars (like, if you're enthused by the series, or more than), it's a good look.

  • in a slightly similar vein to skerret's post, has anyone seen the 'phantom edit' version of phantom menace?

Yeah I watched that recently and didn't really see what all the fuss was about (I'd heard it somehow miraculously turned the film from shite to brilliant). It was undoubtably better simply by trimming Jar-Jar and midi-chlorians and "Yipeeeeee!!!!" and all that pish but yeah, it was hardly a revelation.

Anyone watched the original trilogy despecialised yet? Interested to know if it actually looks any good or if it is as inconsistent as it sounds like it might well be.

I've got them at home from a mate at work, haven't had a proper chance to watch yet. Watched the first one up to Luke and his Uncle and it looks excellent.

    Alreet.

I think to be fair about the whole Star Wars thing - you have to remember it was never intended to be anything more than a tribute to the Saturday morning serials like Flash Gordon etc. Too many arseholes talk it up to being far more than what it is - which is pure hokum.

Bear that in mind and they are enjoyable nonsense - which is good sometimes.

I love enjoyable nonsense, but even as a child I was drawn towards horror, and not space.
  • Vader is a pretty scary mofo when you are 5.
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • The bit when Luke returns home too late after the stormtroopers in 4 to find his aunt and uncle as smouldering skeletons amidst the rubble was also fairly damn scary to me.

Now tho the bit when Luke looks away from the burning homestead and then looks back with a hardened expression, while the faint Jedi theme plays, is one of my favourite SW bits. There is nothing to match that simple scene in all the prequels.
That was awkward and unsettling, never post anything like it again.
  • If you've got the time, here's why the death star blowing up was a very bad thing for the ewoks: nuclear winter on endor.

  • And here's how 4 should have ended:

This is up there with the 108 page rebuttal of the 1st Plinkett review that some star wars nerd with borderline mental issues wrote.

Yeah, that'd have made a lot more sense. Bit like how the guy on the Deathstar should've blown up the escape pod at the start, lifeforms or not (© Spaced).

My mate lent me the first book a couple of years ago.  He told me it was awesome.  It was so poorly written I had to stop reading it after about seventy pages.  I just didn't hate myself enough to put myself through the ordeal of finishing it.

Good man. That's the correct attitude to shitty Star Wars nonsense. Thumbs up.
  • If you've got the time, here's why the death star blowing up was a very bad thing for the ewoks: nuclear winter on endor. http://www.theforce.net/swtc/holocaust.html

    SUMMARY
The ewok population is effectively extinguished. Most were killed in a mass-extinction event affecting life on their homeworld, due to unavoidable fallout and debris from the destruction of the Death Star II. The Rebel Alliance is culpable but perhaps innocent. All ewoks would have been better off if the tribe which made contact with the rebels continued with their original plan of killing and eating the commando team's leaders.

    Raised a grin.

i suppose it helps to read it when you're young, pre prequels, and obsessed with star wars so anything about it is automatically awesome.

I'd like to echo Davy's comments and distance myself from any substandard SW lit.

    @DS: what about space horror?
Skerret's posting is ok to trip balls to and read just to experience the ambience but don't expect any content.

  • I am currently watching star wars with my son of the back of the prequels being shown on the telly. All the prequels are shit, all the new scenes added to the originals are shit and any new films will be shit too.

I am too gather from earlier comments somebody has done a high quality cut with the new scenes cut out? I have the tv edits on DVD but the sound I'd shit.
  • I watched those red letter reviews earlier.

I feel there is enough there to make an amazing new trilogy but Lucas needs to be in an advisory role at best, too many yes men on the Anakin saga.

I've read worse, that's reviewed better, frankly.

I was going to download the despecialized Star Wars out of curiosity. But it turns out that it's 15gb. Too big for my curiosity.
