Early days but I love the atmosphere, pacing and physics. So far it's not quite as reactive as I'd expected and quite hard but it could be godlike. I've only had an hour or so and have been drinking though so, you know.
It's been a good year for physics nerds such as myself, Control was amazing but I think Noita impresses me more. It's pretty hard but the early levels are so enjoyable structured and reactive that I'm happy playing them repeatedly, getting a little further each time.
The Exile vibes are strong in the initial levels. It's not quite as sedate but it does have an enjoyable, slower pace. The world ticks along without you and you can stumble across corpses in pools of acid or caves which are ablaze. The fire is amazing, the tech talk I linked above makes the behaviours of fire and liquids sound simple, but these small steps build into complex and dynamic behaviours which are incredible. The same is true of the wands, I've not mastered the complexities yet but the system is clever, you can take apart and reassemble them in any way you see fit, the only limitation is the number of slots in the wands. You can make some pretty amazing weapons.
The atmosphere is coherent and great, red eyes glowing or the glimmer of spreading fire in the dark. The grunts with shotguns and eyeball monsters remind me of the original Doom but they're not a simple lift, they're well-crafted and fit within the world. And they crumple so well. The sound is punchy and intense in combat, but also sparse and atmospheric when exploring. And the graphics can be beautiful, the fire is mesmerising and so are the glowing liquids and the neat effect on the water. The spell pyrotechnics can be glorious, as beautiful as Geometry Wars, which is a high praise.
I think it's fair to say I love it. There are a few balance issues but it runs smoothly for me and I'm looking forward to watching it develop. It's already well worth the £13 or so they're asking but if my words don't convince you then you can find some nice pictures here
I'm at a similar point. Was about to ask if this would be a good rogue-like for drunkedness, and expected gifs galore to win me over, make me laugh and say, Yeah this is the one.
