Election 2019 - Hide in a fridge to win
‹ Previous123456761
  • This doesn't even necessarily need to become a thread. I just wanted to say this for everyone here, even those who don't give a shit about politics normally. But if it does turn into a discussion, then great.

The following post is obviously pro-Labour, but honestly I don't see it as being about Jeremy Corbyn as such, and I know plenty of people don't like him, but right now I just don't think it matters that much. There's the future of the UK at stake - not a country I even live in anymore, but my home and a place where family and friends live, and also just a place where things could be so much better. Anyway, this is what I wanted to say:

So, an election in the UK on 12 December. For many of us it could be the most important one in our lifetimes. For some people, the result will literally be a matter of life and death. It’s not just about Brexit either, although a Tory win will make No Deal highly likely. It’s about health, the environment, education, labour rights, the tax system, everything.

There’s rarely been such a stark choice.* On one hand, a party supported by the wealthiest working for the wealthiest. People who are totally shielded from poverty themselves, to the point they can afford anything except to tell the truth. Disaster capitalists who’ll actively destroy public services to siphon off more money upwards, with no plan for the future beyond their own interests.

On the other hand, a Labour party with a set of policies carefully designed with the issues facing the country in mind. Like the housing, employment and climate crises, the underfunding of healthcare, or public services privatised for the sake of profiteering. Issues that aren’t just going to disappear and will only get worse over time. Most of all, these are plans that think about how the country can adapt to changing conditions.

So I would just say, do whatever you can to ensure the right result. Vote, of course (tactically if necessary). Join a party. Donate. But anything else to share information, especially the actual policies of these parties and how they will affect people, whether on the street or online, is also valuable. If the Tories win, at least let’s not look back and think that we could have done more.

    * I'm aware things are different in Scotland, where Labour are pretty awful, the SNP are big dogs and the Tories will likely be wiped out anyway.

And well done for not mentioning the B word
  • Badger?
Not everything is The Best or Shit. Theres many levels between that, lets just enjoy stuff.
  • Wont vote labour cause of corbyn. Will vote lib dems or green party. This general election will become the unoffical referendum part 2, basically vote for a party if they are pro brexit or not.

    Hello.

But yes, if we had a Strongly Agree button I'd push it.

In most places voting lib dem will only increase the chances of a Tory government. What's your constituency Dino?

Please think beyond Brexit. It's important, but there's so much more at stake here. At least look at the results of the last election in your constituency and see where your vote is best placed to ensure the Conservatives don't win the seat.

Can you explain more? Cos you don't like his policies, because you think he's racist/a terrorist, because he says he won't press the nuclear button, because you think he'll tank the economy by moving money from rich people to poor people, because you wouldn't like to go to the pub with him, ...?
  • I don’t care for his beard.

Basingstoke BC, maria miller (labour) is the mp.
  • Great thread! Definitely gets hunk's seal of approval.

Isnt stopping the conservatives the same as trying to stop brexit?
  • Fucking Tories. I’ll vote for whoever it takes to stop them

Maria Miller is Conservative. That seat had around 9k Tory majority in 2017, with Labour 2nd.

A vote for Labour could make a difference there.

Probably, yes. But Labour are the only party that can win enough seats to form a government in their place.

Hes a socialist who though i agree with some of his ideas, he will want to transform british politics ala thatcherism did when she came to power. Things are a complete mess in the political arena at the moment. We need some stability and clarity. Corbyn would add oil to the fire then throw some fireworks on top of it.

You are correct. Too early for my brain.

And just to add, Lib Dems and Greens got virtually nothing. Voting for either would effectively be a waste.
  • Kinda sucks having to leave it all in the hands of England, honestly have no confidence in this vote going any other way than Tory supremacy, but we live to dream.

Genuine question - do you think the current government has offered clarity and stability? If not, voting for anyone but Labour puts them back in power.
  • God I wish we had had "Chaos with Ed Milliband" instead of all this stability with the Tories.

He's rather the opposite end of the scale to Thatcher, but yes, I agree he's an advocate for change, so I guess if you're happy with the status quo then I suspect his won't be the manifesto for you. I'd argue the status quo is where the fire has stemmed from, though, so without change it's gonna keep smouldering away. And please think of those for whom the status quo is a fucking disaster.
  • I’m not a fan of Corbyn.

But I don’t have to like him.

I vote labour because as a party it is more than its leader.

Unless Labour don’t stand a chance (the area I used to live in was was borderline green, so that’s who I voted for and that’s who won).

Basically you’d have to be an absolutely abhorrent individual to be worse than the current lineup of the Conservative party and although I don’t think much of him, Corbyn isn’t that level of arsehole.
  • Always been Labour, or rather anti-Tory, not about to change that.
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • Doesn't like Corbyn, doesn't know who his mp is for. We're doomed. Like Temps, I can't see owt but another shit show.

    Exactly how I feel too.

Although I need to have a good think about whether there’s anything I can do to help campaigns down there from up here (and whether I have time to do it).
  • Cardiff Central is gonna be interesting. Our MP is good (I think) but the Libs and the Labs fight here in perpetuity. The area is super remain and the tories don’t stand a chance.

I dont think I’ll ever feel uncomfortable voting labour but the number of voices that call a large number of people in the Labour Party racist does make me have a quantum of doubt.

Maybe I’m as entrenched as leave people and FBPE wankers!

You seem confused. If the political arena is a complete mess, why would change be bad? Do we have stability and clarity under Boris now? Or May before him?

Absolute nonsense like this would be funny if it wasn't so scary.
  • If you think the stewardship of the country over the last decade under the Tories has been fine, then by all means vote someone other than Labour Dino.

However, since you seem to be hinting at acknowledging that they've made an absolute fucking mess of the country, it seems odd that you'd be willing to return them. To take your analogy, further, Boris Johnsons plan seems to be adding napalm to the fire, and then dropping a nuclear bomb on it, whilst selling off anything that isn't nailed down to the highest bidder to profit as many of his chums as possible.
