Ok I'm a bit thread happy, but I enjoyed the compo thread in the old nuForum.
I'd enjoy some game dev chit chat. Anyone a bedroom coder? Anyone got games they don't want to pimp but would like forum buddies to know about? A thread for you.

    Linkies:

Skerret and Shabby McCrabby's Call Connect: iTunes

Lazy Gun's ton of Unity stuff:
    Boom
    Cabal
    Catapult
    CrazyGolf
    Flarble Madness
    Wrecking

Ram's Games: 'The Berserker'  and The Beautiful Game

Edge Compo entries: I think this is the fullest list (and it of course includes the awesome On The Edge, which you must all play, as it got an honourable mention, somewhat implausibly)

    Oh and thingy's brother's thing

And, new in, superflyninja's stuff: linky
  • Hey Ace.  I was just contemplating a similar thread myself!  It would even perhaps make a nice sticky, if you were prepared to update the OP with a list of forumite games (i'm too lazy for that, which is why i'm glad i found your thread!), and that way 'new' people who just arrive looking to pimp their own game (but aren't just a bot) might post in a suitable location and not end up getting their ear chewed off!

you should definately mention your 'On The Edge' game, cos it's amazing.

and then someone that isn't me should casually mention that 'The Berserker' is the greatest game ever and that it was made by someone from the forum, and can be played in your browser here: http://www.supersmashinggreatgames.com/theberserker/
    :)

  • I wont leave this thread alone aha, but sure great thread idea, ill link stuf ive done tomoz, its just a silly collection of 'sketches' really, but id like to see what everyone's up to for sure! Id probably end up  asking endless technical questions too

    ....I approve!
    Get schwifty.
  • I also made a little XNA game a while back, 'The Beautiful Game: The Game'
An online multiplayer 'world cup singles' footy game. It's quite fun actually, but I only ever managed to get about 5 people to play it. :(
There's some nonsense and the download on its website here: http://www.thebeautifulgame-thegame.com
You can 'practice' on your own if you can get your router set up, but you really need other players, so if anyone really wants to try it then let me know and I'll arrange a time with a few mates for a kick about!

  • I was going to start a similar thread when I've finished the game I'm currently working on, so I'm glad I've found this.

I'm currently working in Flash but after finishing my current project I want to look into other game making options. I've had a little play in Unity and it looks quite cool. I've also downloaded Game Maker, not had a proper look at it yet though, although first impressions lead me to believe it might be a bit basic. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Also, my artwork sucks ass so if there's anybody who does art / animation but isn't so keen on the codey bits then perhaps we could look into collaborating.

  • Cool, is there any advantage to using C# over Java in Unity? Just Java is so similar to Actionscript it might be easier to learn, although I'm starting a degree in game programming next year that is mainly focussed on programming in C anyways.

Does Unity have any graphics editing within it or will I be importing things in made in Maya etc?

Lol, kind of hypnotic watching that little goblin falling through nothing forever...

I can see the potential though.

  • C# is like the bastard child of C++ and java, if you can grasp java you can grasp c# in a second, i came from actionscript to c# and hardly noticed the difference

Unity will rely on you importing everything but its very versatile regarding import options, you'll be looking at importing .fbx for 3d (although you can import .max if you want) and maybe .psd if you can bear the load times although i find converting them to png/tif or whatever laborpous so they go to psd anyways

There's some things you can get on the asset store that alow you to edit in unity but youre best off relying on programs designed for it

i have grand ideas but im too busy elsewhere the idea is he lands on towns and you can boost him about with magiv and fuck the town up in as few shots as possible, like a mic of angry birdss and Pain, but yeah, lots of work and busy
  • Tell me about it. Making games takes such a long time as well.

  • the initial concept/prototype takes a week max, making a game takes months and months and months, theres so much shit to do and the amount of content you have to produce even for something simple blows my mind

Well I updated the OP, but it all went a bit wrong.  You get the drift though.

Also, yes, C# and Unity both get a thumbs up from me.  As does XNA.
  • yeah, i think the fact that a lazy, easily distracted numpty like me actually managed to produce something in both XNA and unity with little prior knowledge of programming certainly suggests they're pretty good places to start.
"Like i said, context is missing."

  • I might have to look into XNA. Am I right in thinking you can make Xbox games with this? I like the idea of making a game for a console.
You really are fond of chatting with me, aren't you? If I didn't know better, I'd think you had feelings for me!
  • Yup. You can make them for the Indie marketplace on XBL.
And Steam technically so that opens up the PC and Mac. But it'd have to be reasonably competent for them to accept it.

Windows Phone uses the same language so porting to that wouldn't be too hard either.
You could even use the Mono framework to port it to iOS and Android. Although it costs money I think.

Basically you can take the C# code base anywhere you want.
  • Cool. At the moment I'm sort of just messing about but it's good to think long term. When I start this degree next year I'm going to try and hijack people from the game art course and maybe make something decent in the next couple of years.

  • Thanks acemuzzy, this is really useful. I've already found some decent stuff in 5 minutes so with time I reckon I could cobble together a whole game out of this stuff.

  • Cheers for the update muzzy, hope my stuff isnt shameful

XNA is arite but its a more 'trad' take on game dev, Unity is very reliant on a GUI and specific workflow

In terms of licenses Unity is suh a clear winner for anything it blows my mind, you can make up your mind in the first round of maths, but OP should maybe also list cryengine and udk as options, although despite their immense power, id think anyone doing something serious with them absolutely insane

Congrats to acemuzzy for his honourable mention in the Edge competition, very nearly a runner-up apparently. Look forward to playing it soon.
