I have so many thoughts I've deleted two posts that were full below already and just don't know what to say about this shit show. The Globe's and DGA have shown they refuse to acknowledge diversity and it's gonna be Joaquin and Martin and off we go again.
When this forum first started I posited a question a d got shit from it, but also a lot of insanely smart ideas that were next gen about "destiny is good, how can it be better?"
None of those were from me because I genuinely am not creative enough to do so.
But if I were to ask the same question - how can we (seriously) make the Oscars (and its Ilk) better , how do we do that?

A big issue to me seems to be the Academy's narrow acceptance process.
If each member can only nominate one person each year, that person must be from the same discipline and that person has to fit various other remits. Then the pool shrinks of who could become a member and people are likely to pick those that share opinions, backgrounds and experiences.
Over the years that becomes a hive mind that blocks diversity in terms of sex, race, religion but also diversity of what is considered an "Oscar" movie.
The Academy gets bigger every year but diversity within it is diluted.
I also get the impression there is a sense of not wanting to rock the boat too much -

Just remember that they're the trade awards rather than the final say about film greatness that we often treat them as. It actually seems like the move to Sky and subsequent lack of viewers has made people take them more seriously than they used to when we all sat through the tedium.

Decide how you want to make it different and do things that. Drive to that thing.

I mean: if the question was how do we make the oscars something that will fuel the idea of comic books type films/Disney’s bread and butter as being something that will sustain that shit for another generation then giving an award for best actor in a comics book film might be a good way of doing that.

My own concept for livening up the Oscars would have been to widen out the academy, get more women and BAEM members in, but they literally did that two years ago. So I guess it's a purge of the old men a la the movie the purge. -

You're right. But even in the UK where we have more support, the BAFTAS remain steadfastly dull.

Thing is though these big shows appeal to the mainstream by awarding the mainstream films. If all the awards just go to filmy films that only film buffs have heard of then no one (generally speaking) will be interested in the awards. There are other awards/events that perhaps have more 'integrity' but they don't reach most people."Like i said, context is missing."

and no doubt a bit of snobbery towards action/comedy type films too.
but the lists are still generally big films that you could see in your local multiplex is the point. it's the 'best of the popular mainstream film' awards, rather than 'we've scoured the globe to bring you the very best piece of film regardless of language, release and impact'."Like i said, context is missing."

That was the Golden Globes. Gervais isn’t famous enough to host the Oscars.

He is but he’s probably too controversial. They dropped Kevin Hart for homophobic comments he made in the past even though they didn’t have a presenter afterwards. In that perspective Gervais might be too much for them.
