Game of the decade 1990-1999
  • I started whittling down my top 100 and longlist entries, then realised I was taking out PS1 games which qualify. This could be a tough task.

Disappointing lack of Ristar on liv's list.
It was on there but it dropped off, it may come back.
  • At first i was like 'not another fucking best of list', but then this my peak gaming era so couldn't stop myself....

    erm
    1 Zelda Ocarina
    2 Mario 64
    3 Super Mario Kart
4 WWF Wrestlemania 2000 (would have been the sequal No Mercy but that was released in 2000)
    5 Goldeneye
    6 SWOS
    7 International Superstar Soccer Deluxe
    8 Super Tennis
    9 Gran Turismo
    10 Excitebike 64

No real thought to the order, just the way i wrote them down...but the top 3 are probably locked in golden and the rest could be any order really and mainly about multiplayer memories

  • My rough, not final list which needs ordering and pruning is
    Castle of illusion
    Alladin (MD)
    Gunstar heroes
    Super Mario World
    Super Mario Kart
    Monkey Island 2
    Day of the Tentacle
    Tetris
    Command and Conquer
    ISS Pro Evo 98 edition
    Super Bomberman
    Civilization
    Tie Fighter
    Worms

God knows what’s getting cut. Tie Fighter is probably one for the chop but that was great.
  • It was released on MD first, so I guess he means that.

No idea of the differences, only ever played the MS one.
  • MS one is miles better so I'm poised to judge. Escape knows.
  • FINAL

    1. Mario 64
    2. Super Mario World
    3. Yoshi's Island
    4. Super Street Fighter 2
    5. Doom
    6. Day of the Tentacle
    7. Ocarina of Time
    8. Sim City (Super NES)
    9. Metal Gear Solid
    10. Goldeneye

    Instant gut feel says...
    1) Super Mario World
    2) Zelda: LTTP
    3) Final Fantasy III
    4) Tetris
    5) Super Metroid
    6) Zelda: OOT
    7) Civ II
    8) Secret of Monkey Island
    9) Goldeney
    10) Syndicate

But I'm uncertain on 6+ so reserve the right to swap em round when I remember other games.  Worms, Bomberman, SF2, Super Mario Kart, Mana vying for attention.  And sensi, and Warcraft 2.
  • Jesus this is impossible.

    Castle of Illusion MS?

MS 4 life. Haven’t played the MD one. Replayed the MS one a few years ago.
  • Oh fuck I forgot about Championship manager.
  • Just reading through everybody’s lists, without even thinking of my own.

    What an amazing decade.

I had it on GG which I assume was ms version, great game.

  • Working my way through my list, and the late 80s casualty list is surprisingly high.

oof. yeah. i might have to punt out Gran Turismo for that (i didn't actually have a PS, but was amazed by GT from the short play time at mates etc. That and PES were the only games i proper envied from other platforms, but i'm treating the PES i loved as post-2000 and going for the sister from this era)

I mean, who knew that Carrier Command was as early as 1988?! Obviously this sort of thing helps with the final task of whittling down, but good grief, the 80s had some belters.

I’m not sure what that one is tbh. 93 and 94 were the same game more or less. 94 had the real teams instead of just the real players. EA Hockey was before them(?). 93 was the one I caned for months. I think I had 94 but didn’t get into it quite as much.

  • I had to look it up but even that’s confusing as they got named different things in different territories.
  • Solitaire on Windows was first included in 1990. My Mum would probably vote for that.

I remember writing down my season stats every time I played trying to get Jeremy Roenick to beat them again and again. Should have known then that databases were my thing really

  • I’ve done a first pass-through, and narrowed it down to thirty. Fuck knows how some of you have narrowed it down to ten already, unless you had it sitting waiting and ready to go.

I think most (or at least I) went the other way around, rather than trimming from all, started from none
