Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • I'd love Gloomhaven but I've a 9-year-old and wanted something a bit simpler as an intro to a more advanced minis game - A step up from My Little Scythe.

What about Unmatched? It's dead simple but me and my lad(9) have a ton of fun with it.

  • Unmatched looks good but seems to be unavailable :(

There are a few games of this type I've been looking at Mice and Mystics and Jaws of the Lion looks good. Tilly was really interested watching me play Shadow of Mordor and Dark Souls 3 and really likes board games, so I've hopes of her getting into this genre.

Ooh, tell you what is a cracking little asymmetrical strategy game for 2 with minis....Raptor. Absolutely brilliant mix of bluffing and tactics. Elliot loves it.

I'm playing the long game.  Bought Frosthaven and the lad is almost 3.
It's a goddamn snoozefest out there.
  • I got paid to write about how you paint miniatures. It's only a basics guide, but hey, I think it's ok?
  • I need to know the basics, cheers Tempy I’ll take a look later.

  • Nice! Read the intro and you have a great style, will actually bookmark for when I inevitably get back into it :)
  • What's the point in shading washes? Isn't it easier just to start from your darkest colour and highlight up?
  • Thanks folks! It was interesting trying something different! Editor was a really important part of this process, cos I am not used to writing SEO style guides.

Washes tend to be quite thin, you can make your own with water but if you use GW shade washes, the medium is formulated so that it dries heavier in the recesses. It also doesn't have full opacity, which makes them a bit more forgiving - you often don't even need to bother going back over areas with the basecoat again and can jump straight to highlighting

You can certainly start low and work up, but the shade method is quickest for good beginner results I think - you can quickly chuck a wash on and it looks good. I think most high level painters start mid and work up and down. As with anything there's always reasons for and against it.
  • Well, already learnt something new about wet pallets and metals splitting so it does it's job Tempy.

In addition to Temps advice, lighter colours tend to either be less opaque than darker colours, or a nightmare to work with because they contain a lot of white pigments, which can end up giving you a chalky texture if you aren't careful. So if you go darkest to lightest you are likely going to have to a lot more coats of paint than going from a mid tone then going down to the shade colour in recesses and up to the highlights on the high spots.

Also sometimes you can do the shade wash at the end and the shade will act like a filter on the raised areas where only a thin layer will remain and this can help to unify your highlights if you are going from something quite dark to light.

  • Sold some minis I was never gonna build or paint, and bought myself the Void Dragon as a treat for some good news. Had a fun weekend painting him. Really absurd model, GW tech continues to go hard.

  • Splendid stuff Tempy. What do 'Void Dragons' do then?
It wasn't until I hit my thirties that I realised you could unlock rewards by exploring the map
  • Wonderful composition Tempy. I can't believe you knocked that out in a single weekend!

I think you could really elevate it by going back in and doing a bit more OSL on the head - the star halo thingy is shining down but not casting any light (unlike the lights around the chest). It's the first my eye looks at, and could take it to another level.

Or maybe I'm just jealous at how quickly you crack out great looking miniatures. :)
  • Thanks! It wasn't that big a task really. main body is quite small. I don't really like OSL so I never really do it on my minis. I think it works if you've painted a mini to be in a certain light atmosphere, but I paint all of mine to be played with so I find it looks weird if they all have their own personal light source.  It might make it look technically better but it's not something I am a huge fan of, the effect is supposed to be it materialising out of energy rather than light being cast over the body. I agree maybe something could be done to the head, but I am not sure what if not OSL, and I basically nicked the rim lighting for his head gap off Darren Latham, the guy who designed the mini, so it's good enough for now!

Zaps vehicles real good in game, very hard to kill too. Not 100% sure on the lore as the codex is £30 and I don't want it if I can't use it for games. He's a C'tan shard, so a fragment of an enslaved god, which is why he has a necron thing on his neck to cut his head off if he misbehaves.
  • It is a really great model isn't it. Full of movement.
  • This evening I randomly stumbled upon a YouTube channel called ModelChilli.
Watching this guy put together Bandai Perfect series Star Wars models is immensely relaxing.
  • I've seen a couple of people put gunpla together and then paint and weather them on youtube before, it's really fun to watch. Better than watching people paint warhammer, cos they're bigger so it's more about interesting techniques like oil washing, rather than neat lines etc.
  • After recently getting into gunpla, I sit and watch zakuaurelius when he does his live builds and customs sometimes, and yeah it’s pretty relaxing... just got my first MG Zaku 2.0 (went for tri star version) I should start that as soon as I finish my rg eva until 00. My backlog is down to a few kits and other than the new ver ka I can’t see much else to get now.

Other than eva 02 and 08 obviously. Gotta get those evas.
  • I've been watching Night shift on youtube, which is weekly episodes (at 5pm on Friday) of a guy putting together and painting extremely realistic tanks. Lots of chipping. I really enjoy it, and it's something to look forward to at the end of the week while working from home.

Since I've critiqued Tempy (hopefully helpful....), I thought I'd share what I've been working on. I was waiting to complete it before posting, but since I'm so slow....

Direct light is washing out the bright colours, so hopefully the final model photographed in a little light box will end up looking better.

  • You guys are pretty good at this, huh. Both amazing.

The highlights on those teeny tiny gems...!
  • Looks sweet Voices, that's a model that's on my list to paint even though I have no desire to play Slaanesh. Smooth tones on the legs are ace.
  • Night shift scale modelling is great.

  • Aye, that's very good.
Come with g if you want to live...
  • DarkDung got itself some miniatures apparently, here is a softly spoken Spanish man doing some nice painting:

They turned the whole game into a tabletopper in fact. Wonder if you can still break it by running double Jesters.
  • Yeah the minis look really nice, they got lots of real cool painters to do stuff for the promo art, really wish I could get some.

Just wanted to say. I come into this thread every so often to see how low my jaw goes when it drops.

The level of skill, dexterity and creativity on display here is simply beyond me. I can barely thread a needle.
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • Is this still the thread for actual boardgames?

I might be getting a bit overly optimistic but I'm starting to think about Christmas board games with the family. Fake artist goes to New York was a big hit last year (with the addition of a big white board) and One Night Werewolf and Junk Art have been good in past years.  Any good new party games to think about?  Was considering Wavelength but it seems tricky to get hold of at the moment.
