Washes tend to be quite thin, you can make your own with water but if you use GW shade washes, the medium is formulated so that it dries heavier in the recesses. It also doesn't have full opacity, which makes them a bit more forgiving - you often don't even need to bother going back over areas with the basecoat again and can jump straight to highlighting 

You can certainly start low and work up, but the shade method is quickest for good beginner results I think - you can quickly chuck a wash on and it looks good. I think most high level painters start mid and work up and down. As with anything there's always reasons for and against it.

In addition to Temps advice, lighter colours tend to either be less opaque than darker colours, or a nightmare to work with because they contain a lot of white pigments, which can end up giving you a chalky texture if you aren't careful. So if you go darkest to lightest you are likely going to have to a lot more coats of paint than going from a mid tone then going down to the shade colour in recesses and up to the highlights on the high spots.

Also sometimes you can do the shade wash at the end and the shade will act like a filter on the raised areas where only a thin layer will remain and this can help to unify your highlights if you are going from something quite dark to light.

Thanks! It wasn't that big a task really. main body is quite small. I don't really like OSL so I never really do it on my minis. I think it works if you've painted a mini to be in a certain light atmosphere, but I paint all of mine to be played with so I find it looks weird if they all have their own personal light source.  It might make it look technically better but it's not something I am a huge fan of, the effect is supposed to be it materialising out of energy rather than light being cast over the body. I agree maybe something could be done to the head, but I am not sure what if not OSL, and I basically nicked the rim lighting for his head gap off Darren Latham, the guy who designed the mini, so it's good enough for now!

Zaps vehicles real good in game, very hard to kill too. Not 100% sure on the lore as the codex is £30 and I don't want it if I can't use it for games. He's a C'tan shard, so a fragment of an enslaved god, which is why he has a necron thing on his neck to cut his head off if he misbehaves.

This evening I randomly stumbled upon a YouTube channel called ModelChilli.
Watching this guy put together Bandai Perfect series Star Wars models is immensely relaxing.

After recently getting into gunpla, I sit and watch zakuaurelius when he does his live builds and customs sometimes, and yeah it’s pretty relaxing... just got my first MG Zaku 2.0 (went for tri star version) I should start that as soon as I finish my rg eva until 00. My backlog is down to a few kits and other than the new ver ka I can’t see much else to get now.

Other than eva 02 and 08 obviously. Gotta get those evas.

Yeah the minis look really nice, they got lots of real cool painters to do stuff for the promo art, really wish I could get some.

Is this still the thread for actual boardgames?  

I might be getting a bit overly optimistic but I'm starting to think about Christmas board games with the family. Fake artist goes to New York was a big hit last year (with the addition of a big white board) and One Night Werewolf and Junk Art have been good in past years.  Any good new party games to think about?  Was considering Wavelength but it seems tricky to get hold of at the moment.
