I caught the multiplayer video on the Live dash today expecting it to be some tacked on shite but it looked pretty interesting. Anyone else have this on their radar?

The lineage for this game is weird and bonkers

Tomb Raider is based on a game (uncharted) that is based on tomb raider but its hard to see much original tomb raider in this (apart from the character).

Man, the release date seemed so far away when they first showed it, and now here we are. Where does the time go.

Anyhoo, I am actually very interested in this, unfortunately it drops the same day as Sim City so it's got no chance of getting my eye balls.

I like third person adventure games with a bit of action, so I'm keeping an eye on this. Just hope it's more climbing and puzzle solving than gun shooting.

I watched one of the vids on XBL earlier. I can see they're trying to do something interesting with the character, but the gameplay looks so generic. Cover shooting, exploding barrels, stealth etc. TR was good because it was unique in many ways, and it seems that's what they're trying to get rid of.

But to revert to that first tomb raider is a regression. Shooting at baddies and animals with the same AI? Pernickity jumping? Basically find the next cube gameplay. It was a unique design but they accelerated its ageing process by releasing one a year for 5 years.

this game might as well not be a tomb raider but the fact anyone is paying any heed is because it is Tomb raider.

For me, Tomb raider has always been about weirdo puzzles while shooting crazy dinosaurs and alligators.

Just watched the MP vid on teh 360 dash. Seems ok bit is hardly going to set the world on fire. The Inside Xbox dude (holding a Sony mic I might add, the naughty boy), seemed less impressed as I was that the dev felt he had reinvented the wheel. But, they can get quite enthusiastic these Scandinavian types wot with living in the dark 11 months of the Plornt.

So they can't update that without turning it into a narrative and QTE led cover shooter? Why should the AI be the same? Or the jumping?

My assumption is it's not an easy style of game to lazily copy. Not sure how else to explain why something as successful as TR has never has a lot of clones and has always felt the need to dilute the experience by taking cliched stuff from other games.

It takes too much effort to create atmosphere, explosions are much easier.

Tomb Raider Underworld had plenty of atmosphere and was very close to the original games' style (without those abysmal block-based controls) but, despite being fantastic, it was still fairly slow with the sales.

It's odd that fans say they want something close to the original games, then completely ignore one when it comes along. From what I played of this new game it could be quite similar in terms of atmosphere, but it has added some of the Uncharted style in terms of set-pieces.

Underworld still had annoying shooty sections in it. But a handful of great levels too. Anniversary was the best I've played - solitary exploring, great level design, but with revamped and more fluid controls.

I wouldn't want more of the same with a new game. The focus on exploring and puzzles, sure, but taken to a new level.
