7 Wonders looks perfect for Mike 'I AM CIVILIZATION 5' Hollis.
  • Cyclades sounds immense but is only for 5 players. In fact most of the good ones only support 5 players.
  • Am going to introduce myself to board gaming today while in London.

I'm thinkIng Ticket to Ride and Dominion to start with and maybe one other.

Any recommendations? On games and places to buy. Somewhere central would be good

  • They're prime cuts. Dominion: Intrigue might be more interesting than the base set though, a lot of people can find it a little stale. I have both though.

Ticket to tide is good with young'uns, not sure about the Europe game board(brings in a few more objectives, I think) but I find the American map/game a little to basic.

If you have 3-4 players I really recommened Settlers of Catan, trading ore for sheep has never been so much fun.  Its quick to learn, a great laugh, a nice level of stratergy, every dice roll is watched & involves everying one & every game is different in regards to map/Catan creation.

Forbidden Planet should have a great selection, they do in Bristol, just be prepared to pay their hugh mark up.
  • Yeah I wa thinking Forbidden Planet, I'll pop up there later.

Will give Settlers of Catan a look too, sounds like what I'm after

I've played the iOS Dominion, what's the difference with Intrigue

  • Different cards, there are three big sets, which are vanilla, Intigue and Seaside, plus the smaller sets like Alchemy and such. They all focus on different mechanics. Intrigue is thematically about subterfuge and mechanically forcing hand changes and such.
  • Right I picked up Intrigue and Ticket to Ride Europe.
Forbidden Planet wasn't much use but luckily there's a place just down the road called Orc's Nest that was packed with nothing but board games

  • Ticket to ride is good but there's too much luck of the draw I reckon (in the 1910 megagame expansion). The guy who gets newyork to sanfransisco (or other California place) is clearly at an advantage.
  • Its though because you can lose but not feel shit for two hours as in monopoly.
  • Only just seen the thread otherwise I would have recommended Orc's Nest, small but packed to the rafters, I always grab myself a little something from there every time I am up in the smoke.

The gf and I played Agricola last night, first time playing the full game proper with the Occupations and Minor Improvements rather than the family variant, got my ass kicked 23-38. Got myself per-occupied with a stone house renovation while she claimed all the animal breeds and then expanded her family.

I'm going to be spending 5 hours playing Arkham Horror later today :D

I've been deliberating about buying Agricola, looks like a fun game and some of the expansions look crazy.

I played Munchkin for the first time last week.  Fun game but completely random.
  • I wasn't aware of Munchkin until I saw the recent episode of Tabletop where Will Wheaton was playing, looked cool but like you say seemed to be mainly luck based. Also I think the RPG joke references would be lost on non-geeks, there is a spy version which might be better for my group thematically.

Agricola is awesome. Infinite strategy, masses of pieces, boards and cards to fiddle with, wonderful.

  • The fun of munchkin is the playing and its humour if you like it. However the game itself is complete wank.
  • First proper game of Ticket to Ride done.

5 players, none of the rest have any interest playing games (never mind board games) and it went down a storm.
Some nice sly trickery blocking off routes or using stations. There was even a cheer when one player drew two reds while trying to claim a red tunnel.

Dominion might be a harder sell

Well, Arkham Horror is pretty awesome. Took quite a few hours to get through it, battling Cthulhu nightmares in the 1920s. It's a full co-op game too, everyone working together to prevent some elder god breaking through into reality. Deep game. Highly recommend if you like losing your sanity while slaying tentacled monsters with friends.

Really Nasty Horse Racing Game is good for family related larks.

Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • Sounds like you might have a few converts there then Shinji, top work. I have the USA Map of Ticket to Ride, haven't played Europe which I believe adds a few extra mechanics, tunnels and stations is it?

Not played Arkham Horror before either, I hear it is quite complex, great theme though, might look at that or Ghost Stories near Haloween.

After the drubbing I received at Agricola I sank to a new low and played the single player version. Still fun trying different strategies, only 40 points achieved though rather than the intended 50.

It is fairly complex but once we got into the flow it was fine, just that initial learning curve. Great fun.
  • I played 7 Wonders last night with some friends.  Thought it was a bit average tbh, not enough interaction between players and it ends up feeling like you're just building a hand by yourself.

Also played some lighter games.  Survive: Escape from Atlantis was good fun and also managed to continue my 100% winning record on Get Bit.
  • There is that worry amongst certain card games, especially vanilla Dominion, that all you are doing is building your own deck. Luckily plenty of the expansions offer cards that force interaction, especially Intrigue.

Yeah tunnels, stations and ferries are the new stuff (although I haven't played the USA map except briefly on iOS)
It is pretty luck orientated but it is so easy to pick up. Dominion has only gotten one look in, a lot more difficult to talk non gamers through

  • The key with Dominion is telling everyone to buy silver, all the time. It is dull, but when you have money, you can buy more cards and the game flows much quicker. Every game will always involve your first two hands being either 5c then 2c3e or 4c1e then 3c2e (c = copper, e = estate) In the first circumstance buying an action card is fine, in the second, i'd probably buy 2 silver. Also get them into the habit of playing whilst others are shuffling, and keeping their three card sets seperate. Hand goes to discard, draw from deck, deck is empty, reshuffle discard into deck and continue the cycle. Stumps so many people, but essentially you are playing a TCG where you can see the contents of the booster packs in front of you, and you need to build your dark for the first few rounds so you can cram a victroy.
  • Cheers Tempy, that's a good way to approach. I'll give it a crack tonight

  • Yeah, the money strategy is called 'Big Money' in the community. It will help you beat newcomers because they get giddy over Action cards. Your optimum deck will probably always be 50% money in any strategy, so 20 cash cards, 10 action cards and 10 victory (if you're going for an 8 province win)

Cards that make intrigue fun -

Scout, Harem, Great Hall, Nobles, Ironworks, Copper Works, Minion (YES, SO GOOD) Torturer.

The rules have some pre-set decks, I'd say look at Victory Dance or Best Wishes. Just try and get folk into the mind set of quick wins, people usually try and chain together lots of deck draws, +action, +buys and stuff, but that is nothing compared to utilizing your hand for 6 Coin with only one action card.

Edit: That said, some strategies that involve pulling lots into your hand work really well, it al depends on your deck and the cards involved. If you can pull through 50% of your deck in a turn, you'll be able to buy a province, ergo win.
  • Smithy FTW, am I right Tempy?

Good shout Nexx on Survive and Get Bit. I got Survive for Christmas and found it to be great fun, not terribly deep so good for the casual crowd but very well designed.

I hadn't heard of Get Bit until Will Wheaton featued it on his episode of Tabletop and I think it looks pretty cool. The gf has 7 nephews under 10 so I reckon they will love it. Am about to order Battleline for the gf and I to play round the pool in Majorca so may add Get Bit to the order.

  • Smithy is OG Dominion but it is good. Favourite care is Mine though, makes a ruthless deck.
  • Anyone played any of the versions of Wiz War?  I've been trying to find a new semi-strategic fun game and this seems to be the only recent (the current reprint, I know the original is quite old) one that I can find.  I'm concerned that it might be a bit too random.

I haven't ventured past the original deck, enjoyed what I have played of base Dominion but not felt compelled to move on to Intrigue yet. Gonna try a few different types of games first to see what tickles my fancy.

Just ordered Mystery Express for my brother-in-law, looks like Cluedo done right.
