I tend to treat myself to a new, light 2-player game each year for Mrs Surveyor and I to play on the balcony with a bottle of local plonk on our summer hols. Last year was Lost Cities, this year have gone for Battleline. Both very euro, less than £15 each.

Jaipur gets lots of praise too.

  • I already bought San Juan and Small World, heh. Itchy mouse finger.
  • I have both of those on my wish list, great choices. Saw Small World on Tabletop and thought it looked awesome, seems to have plenty of expansions too.

Nearly went for San Juan for our holiday but looks fairly deep, which is normally a plus but for boozy evenings I thought we needed something less challenging. Be keen to hear what you think of it.

Summoner Wars is also a great 2-player game to consider one day; I only have the iOS version and feel a bit bad that I probably won't ever buy the card version because the app is so good.

My copy of Pandemc arrived today, can't wait to try it out.

  • It is good, but I mainly play with my family and they are too casual to grasp the central concept and play fruitfully. The rules are quite strict, but it is intense.

Small World has tons of expansions, including one that allows you to make modular boards:

It also appears to be super simple to play, so I'm looking forward to it arriving.

San Juan seems to be a close cousin of Puerto Rico, but a little simpler. I wanted Agricloa, but it was £55, which is stupid money considering I got SW and SJ for less than that.

Pfft, on Vanilla just buy silver + gold. If you have a mine, fuck it, use a mine. YOu'll win in no time if you are ruthless. It is a tough strategy to counter.

That's pretty much what I did for a bunch of games while SG got obsessed with stringing actions together. ;)

He and the missus slept on malitias for a few hands. I got some great early raids with them in a few games. +2 and they only had 3 cards. gave me a chance to get more silver, sometimes gold or a action card worth 5 early.

Chancellor is perfect for big money. Buy Silver, buy Chancelor. Every turn yo get a Chancelor in your hand, play it and you get +2 coin to whatever is in your hand so you can easily buy Mines and Golds. Remember that Mine essentially lets you swap up from Bronze to Silver or Silver to Gold AND it sticks the card in your hand meaning you can spend it straight away. Chancellor also allows you to stick your whole deck in the discard pile meaning you get to shuffle and draw again. If you have a small deck of silver and gold then you can cycle so quickly it's unreal.

Hmm. Yeah, didn't necessarily see the advantage of the redo, but I guess with a tight deck it'd be handy.

Big fan of council room on occasion too. Risky, as you give the other players an extra card too, but if you're packing lots of gold already, you can buy big.

The only thing with the game is that it can feel quite detached. Each player just doing their thing. That's when it is nice to have things like militia, council room, witch, etc to liven things up.

Out of interest, on average, how many action cards do people tend to find in their hand at the end of the game? The last game we played where I came second I only had 4 (I did have a few Feasts during the game mind). SG was getting up into the 10+ range.

I'm still great and you still love it.
  • 4-10, depending on the scenario at hand. Deck will usually be 30-40 cards, half of that will be money, a quarter action, a quarter victory. Different strategies effect it though, like Gardens.

It is a detatched game, it's a filler thing for me when I play it, not the meat of the night. Intrigue and Seaside go someway to change that, but it is often a solo game with a combined time limit. Still, it is simple and slick and that's why I like it, even if it is a bit dry.

Have you bean using the spare action cards to make a random set of ten? That can be interesting as it can force you to think up new strategies.

yeah, we've tried the vanilla first play suggestion a few times, the witchy cursey one, big money 3 times, and the rest of the games we either randomised or started with one of the bases and then picked a couple of fav cards each to change up.

It is good fun, even if detached. I reckon we'll find a combo that'll make it a bit more interactive. Witches, thieves, spies, militias, and council room in the mix might make things more happening.

I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Get Intrigue, it adds more cards for interaction and due to the nature of the game it is totally modular, it basically doubles the amount of cards you can make a deck from.
  • Nice. Well, if SG doesn't, I will.

I may be off base, but it seems to me it might be nice to have even more victory cards in play. Or some way to have provinces available later in the hand so as to make action card building a bit more handy. Some of the craziest combos we saw only really bought 2 duchies. Be kinda nice to have a situation where there's still provinces in play and we could have hands with 2-3 buys and 15+ gold to spend etc.

Either way, the game is good, and we've only really played it for two sessions, and the first was just a few hands working out wtf was going on.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Vanilla makes the big buys tough, later expansions don't as they introduce dual role Victory cards that have money value, perform actions etc. Vanilla really is just a total gateway and is very simple, built to introduce all the core concept. If you search for Donald X. on Boardgamegeeks he has written lenghty posts about each set, the concepts behind it and why he picked the cards he did for each one.

This game is awesome, even though I lost consistently it was fun just making decks that did silly things.  On the drive home from Face's place I was dreaming up more ridiculous strategies for a big money game :-P  I'll have to get the expansion!

Good choice with San Juan, and I really enjoyed playing it. I've also been thinking about picking up Small World as it seems simple enough to explain to get my family playing it. Let me know how it works out for you.
  • Had our first game of Pandemic last night - failed miserably!!

Having an Epidemic on the very first card didn't help, got done by the outbreak counter thing in the end.

Great fun, love the theme, seems like lots of scope for replayability with the different mix of roles, and of course adding in the extra epidemics (although perhaps not just yet!)

  • The hard part is getting 5 cards of the same colour, in the same hand, and be at a research station to make a cure all at the same time. The city pile runs out really quickly if people don't pay attention. Dispatcher, Medic and the guy who lets you trade ANY card regardless of where you are stood is absolutely required. That's the tough part though, being on the city to trade that card can take a whole lot of effort. The epidemics are brilliant fun though.

San Juan has been shipped, Amazon haven't even sent Small World, the pricks.
  • Wandered into Orc's Nest today while the girlfriend was in a nearby clothes shop.

I came out with Summoner Wars Master Set.

I will report back later on the initial few games

We had the guy that can build a research station anywhere and the one that can pass any card, seemed a good combo but unfortunately I think we were undone, in part, by my poor shuffling of the city deck, meaning the first 4 or 5 infected cities were all the same colour.

Nice. The iPad version has shown me what a great game it is, but the main problem with the app version is that the attacks are based on dice rolls, and a randomly generated roll never feels the same as holding that dice in your sweaty hand, maybe blowing on it a bit, and letting it fly whilst you sit there with everything crossed!

    SG is in bound.

  • Good stuff. Small World and Sam Juan have arrived, the former is all packed into a box and ready to go. SO MANY BITS.
  • Just finished the session. Woah.

  • Face does not like Saboteurs, and refuses to play if they are in the mix :-P
  • Haha, that's the way to do it. I take it he hasn't encountered a torturer or an aggressive Copperworks/ironworks deck yet?
  • Played a couple of games of Sabateur today, having bought it for the sister-in-law.

Cool, quick little card game with hidden roles (1 maybe 2 players are a Sabateur) and you are laying tunnel cards that link together to form a route, the good guys trying to get to the treasure cards laid out 7 card spaces away, the sabateurs trying to block the path or causing cave-ins. Action cards allow you to break other people's kit to stop them digging.

Fun little game, and only a tenner.

  • Completed my first solo run of Mage Knight tonight.

This game is actually pretty hard once you get passed the difficulty of figuring out what the rules are. One bad move (like attacking the wrong enemy at night) can really ruin a couple of turns and with the dummy player forcing time to move on a whole round can almost be wasted.

My third time to play it now and I still haven't won a game yet. Need to get a good 3 player co-op game going to really get into the whole city siege aspect of it, for one player it's an incredibly daunting task to even consider how to do it.

Still I am absolutely loving it. The mechanics, while complex, all flow naturally out of the game and don't feel like a hindrance. Combat is actually more like a puzzle while you're trying to get the maximum out of each phase through using the cards in your hand, the skills earned and the units hired. My head is a little sore from some of those battles just trying to figure out how to defeat the enemy while taking the least amount of damage possible.

It really is brilliant, it's just a bit of a brick wall to get through. The rulebook is useful but the lack of index is a bit frustrating. It'll probably take me at least another 4-5 games to fully understand the rules but I'm looking forward to the point where I don't need to look at the book any more and can just focus on enjoying the game.

I'm all for copperworks. And I was the only one to rock torturer. I would also add that SG should thank me, as I was heading off Mrs Face's aggravation. ;) I could see the writing on the wall!

Sg caned the last game by dominating the harems early and then just being able to buy provinces non stop.

Looking forward to comboing vanilla with intrigue.

Is there any particular reason, other than game length, that you couldn't play 3 player with six victory cards (and more of them per pile) and then a few more than the 10 action cards? I can't see why the game would obviously fall down. Although I know from one of the hands we played (which was suggested in the box) that you can end up with a pretty boring combo of things on occassion.

Also, I think the main prob with sab in the hand we played was that there was no reaction cards in play.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • I think 10 kingdoms forces adaptation to the situation I think. I don't think it really has much to do with balance (although if there a lot of two coin decks you bore through them very quickly and ending the game quick too)
  • I am about to buy ticket to ride Europe for a family holiday game after reading this thread. Can anyone confirm that this is a good idea.
