Multiplayer:
Fun Type (no rankings or matching)
Turfwar (online) - 4v4 paint as much v the other team in a set time
Ranked (gain rankings C- to A+ by winning games, go down rankings by losing).
Splatzones
4v4 paint one or two zones with mostly your corner to start a countdown from 100, first team to zero wins!
Tower Control
4v4 paint and take over a tower and then maintain control as so that it eventually gets to your base. If it gets to a base then that team wins, if it doesn't then the team that got the tower closest to their base wins.
1v1 local (Pro-Pad for TV player and Gamepad for Gamepad player)
Single player
Amiibo (unlocks single player challenges)
(Squid one exclusive to Splatoon special edition in UK)
AUGUST UPDATE
Squad Battle: Pick your friends (teams of 2 or 4), play v other teams made of friends (ranked battles)
Private Battles: Friends only, custom rules (1 v 4)
Level Cap increased (lvl 50) - ranked and normal
Ranked Level max = S+
Two new weapon types SLOSHER (shotgun) and SPLATLING (gatling gun)
40 NEW GEAR
FUTURE UPDATES include MAPS, WEAPONS and RAINMAKER MODE

Surprised by how good that single player video looks, was expecting something more obviously tacked on. Does this definitely have no private room feature out the box?

There does seem to be a lot of post release dlc. I think they wanted to have something out before E3.
Some of it is expected (maps) others seem like they should be on the game (private lobbies). IN the iwata asks they said they were only 10percent complete at last year's e3.

Yep, it doesn't look great. They have form with smash bros, but even then the post release update felt minor (miiverse stage).
