I wonder if it's not quite that cut and dry in terms of the Republicans though. I can only imagine the campaign against Sanders should he get the nomination, and who knows how those in the 'centre' might vote (or not) in the end. But still it's not much of a risk since the alternative is Clinton.

And this is one of the big problems with the American system. The parties are under no obligation to actually follow a democratic process to select their Presidential candidate. Also the whole system of caucus(es?) and primaries taking place over an extended period is nuts. If you have a bad result in the first two conservative and evangelical regions then you are likely to lose funding and be out of the race, despite the fact that you might actually do far better in the more representative, urban, multicultural regions later in the campaign.

There are worse people but the mechanism of getting into government by birth or through the church are as bad as they come. At least with a military coup they've demonstrated some organisational skills.
