Who would ever think an abstract symbol is a good way of representing a word? If you have never seen it before how on earth would you know how to pronounce it? -
maybe they wear makeup to hide their hexalips from the western civilisation they so adore

Absolutely. Good thing we'd never do anything like that in English. That would be thoroughly rough on people who are trying to learn. -

Ds knows, our abstract symbols are quite obvious. Theirs (yeah, all of them) are just crazy.

Nah, they were digging the old ways back in the old days. Mountains and nature and appreciative tea-drinking and all that.
Then the '70s hit, and it was all beige trousers to the tech pumps. -
@yossarian is there actually a way to discern what the hiroglyphs mean if you have never learned them before? I am teaching myself mandarin at the moment, and while I find learning aural/oral fairly easy, the written language is completely alien and I can't imagine being able to remember more than a few dozen words at most.

Japanese/Chinese have radicles. Hardly foolproof though! -
I have no idea. I don't know nuffing about Japanese.
