My point is that I didn't they think they were from the 1st film as they took on fairly heavily armed prey; albeit with some advantages. I always took it as a "proving your worth"/"passage to adulthood" thing. But it seems I was wrong.
That would have made for a better IP.
But when we know modern Hollywood doesn't care much about earlier films and continuity.

They took on the best that humans had to offer at the time, with weaponry that was similar to what the humans were using. It feels fairly consistent with the first film, IMO.
