Lars Vilks, who did the Mohammed cartoon that caused uproar a few years back
His car (complete with police protection alongside him) crashed into a tanker? I think they're still investigating, cos it at least sounds potentially suspicious...
Yeah this is rather big news here in Sweden; the roads where it happend are perilous though and it seems like the police escort (in a car that is heavier than the norm) managed to break the guard rail, while cornering, and then found themselves in the wrong lane where a big truck almost instantly crashed into them.
Paddy Moloney 83, founder of The Chieftains 60 years ago. Probably the most talented group of Irish traditional musicians ever. Their collaborations with other folk musicians from Mexico, China etc led to some incredible albums.
Always had them in my 'must listen to more of' list since Barry Lyndon, think they did the version of Women of Ireland on that, beautiful tune. Gonna stick a playlist on this arvo I think.
“Who?”
Musician and composer. He played with The Shadows, Bowie, and Serge Gainsbourg. But he’s better known as a TV theme composer. He wrote the Grange Hill theme. And all the music for Countdown.
Here’s the best bit. He started a foundation for underprivileged music students, funding courses at Leeds College of Music and the National Film and TV School. He donated the royalties from the Countdown music to the foundation. So every time that big clock counts down and the famous music plays, there are kids getting more time at college.
Sad one this for Rangers fans. We knew he was ill but even as recent as a few weeks back he was photographed at a charity golf event so it looked like he might have been getting better. Sadly not the case.
I met him a number of years back when it turned out he was in the audience of a play I had written. Gave him a handshake in the bar afterwards and he told me he had enjoyed it. A nice memory.
