Just back from that Turkey. Little place near Oludeniez.

Had my pre-conceptions turned on their head. Beautiful country full of lovely people. And I didn't get the shits once.

Here's a shot of me supporting indie game development.

  • Because his head is a mask on a stick.
  • Flesh-withering sessions on the can ruled out so it must just be that.

  • flying to Trieste tomorrow then driving over to Istria in Croatia for the weekend. Looking forwards to it, i've heard good things about the place. Its apparently swealtering though which i dont really appreciate being so white/prone to burning.

  • I got up at 5:30 am on Wednesday, flew to Belfast, drank 'til 3am then got up at 6am yesterday to get a flight home and back into work for 10am.

    Thats how you holiday, bitches.
  • Just back from a week of arsing about in Spain. Been to a few beautiful places Valencia, Guadalest, Altea and Alicante, read books and drank lots of rum. Also found an arcade with Out Run 2 and got a massive tub of delicious honey for ten Euros direct from a bee keeper in Guadalest.

So it's looking increasingly likely that summer 2013 is TOKYOGOTIMEFUNSUPERPARTY. Have absolutely no clue about hotels however - what sort of cost are we talking, where etc. we aren't particularly fussed about it being luxurious or anything, biggest concern would be it being in a decent location, near attractions etc. any help?

    Capsule for 2.
  • A Ryokan is a good bet. I stayed at one called the Andon. It was very nice, if small, and had a jacuzzi as well as free tea and coffee. I can't remember how much it cost though.

I'd recommend doing a pod hotel, even if it's only for one night.
  • Hopefully cashing in soon, so fancy Tokyo next year too.

Someone talk to me about the areas of Akasaka and Shinjuku
  • Me and the missus went to Japan last year, absolutely loved it and can't wait to go again.  You might think about getting some lessons, I did about 9 months of weekly lessons and it really helped get more from the trip.

I would not spend too much time in Tokyo, perhaps just go for the Ghibli museum, Akihabara and Harajuku.  Shinjuku is a good base for Tokyo.  I enjoyed Kyoto and other places more.

If you are up for seeing other places get a JR pass, it'll make travelling much easier.

Check http://www.hyperdia.com/en/ to see what trains go where, and if you can use them with a JR Pass (some of the fastest Shinkansen are restricted).

If you want to do classy shopping try staying at http://www.hotelmonterey.co.jp/en/index.html that was nice and very reasonable.  Personally I thought Ginza was boring BUT this hotel is within walking distance of the famous Tsukiji fish market so if you like Sushi then there is an abundance of places to eat serving the best fucking sushi I've ever had.

Be a bit more fun to stay somewhere like hotel sunroute plaza Shinjuku, great location for all sorts of stuff.

Here is an excellent Sushi bar in Shinjuku (although not quite as good as the one near the fish market, they don't speak English or have English menus but they are really nice) -

Got more recommendations to post later when I get back from the shops.

This is brilliant so far, Billy. Well useful.
  • if you are going with a lady friend then definitely take a walk down Takeshita Street and Cat Street in Harajuku, it is the centre of the world for kawaii girls who want to shop or hang out.  http://www.harajuku.jp/dhw/eng/map.html

In Akihabara there are shops selling vintage games freaking everywhere. There's about 5 Sofmaps, they're good for new stuff with a bit of old, although not all of them stock 2nd hand stuff.  I got Segagaga from one of the Sofmaps in Akihabara.

Supa Potato is without doubt the most famous game shop in Tokyo (and the world?), the selection is truly out of this world, and the prices are not as bad as I had read.  Bit hard to find, I accidently went into a porn shop to ask directions, the bloke was very helpful -

    Supa potato -
    supapotato.jpg

Thing about Tokyo is how vertical a lot of the shops are, that's why Supa Potato is a bit hard to spot.  You can find a shop selling dvds on the ground floor, 1st floor might be karaoke, 2nd floor games, 3rd floor sushi, 4th floor an arcade, all owned by different people.

Anyway, I found the prices better around the corner at one of the Trader stores, and the selection was top notch too.  I spent hundreds of pounds on games at this shop, all in mint quality and less than ebay prices.

    Trader in Akihabara -
    trader.jpg

There are several Liberty stores around Akihabara that are also worth a look.  The best bargains are to be had from Hard Off and Book Off stores, these are great big warehouse type places that have a lot of games stuff in respectable condition near the front, AND THEN a load of stuff in blue boxes they call junk towards the back.  But a lot of what they call junk is actually not bad, depends on the store.  Not many Hard Offs or Book Offs in Tokyo, and they are shit in the city, you have to go more rural to find the good ones.  But they are where a lot of ebay sellers go to get their stock.

if you are serious about buying games I would take a spare hard suitcase and ALOT of cash, do your research on prices on ebay first (make a list) so you know if you are getting a good deal.  I gave myself 2 days for games shopping in Akihabara, it was great.

  • Trying to find a Ryokan is a minefield, there are just so many, and loads of them appear to be quite modern buildings with gaudy 70s interiors attempting to be traditional.  Or there's the super expensive 200 year old boutique ones which look amazing but cost the earth.

We only stayed in one Ryokan, it was more expensive than any of the hotels but my god, the Kaiseki meal justified the cost.  The food just kept coming, the beef was phenomenal and the fish was great.  There were a few things that I just didn't know what they were, but all excellent and fresh.  The service was lovely, the building was lovely, the whole family said goodbye to us when we left.  They had a lot of 'antiques', verging on the macabre, but it certainly had character.  http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g298113-d320172-Reviews-Sumiyoshi_Ryokan-Takayama_Gifu_Prefecture_Chubu.html

It was in Takayama which is a lovely train journey from Tokyo, through picturesque valleys with a winding river to one side.  Takayama has an old part of town that is just stunning, old wooden buildings and signs that look like something out of Spirited Away.  Old sake breweries, antique shops and stalls selling freshly grilled local beef.

    3213488.jpg

There's a Hida folk village nearby Takayama that is the main draw to the area, pay a small fee to walk around a lake surrounded by gorgeous giant old wood buildings with thatched roofs.

    Hida_Folk_Village__Takayama.jpg

i got the impression that there are less visitors to areas outside of the big cities since the earthquake, and that folk in Takayama were very grateful for people dropping by.

  • Currently trying to find somewhere nice to take the family next year.

This year we went to Butlins, and it was great, but I want something abroad, and hot. Well, the wife does actually.

We are stuck to school holidays, and just want a nice, reasonable family holiday, beach, apartment block, maybe a pool. You know the sort of thing.

So far, the most reasonable I can find is about £2 and a half grand. 2 adults, 2 kids. Unbelievable. How can anyone afford to go on holiday?

So now it looks like we're going with the inlaws and getting a villa.
  • Not a huge amount to say about Kyoto except that is BLOODY GREAT and I WANT TO GO BACK!  I'm enjoying looking all these places up and remembering them though.

We stayed at another Hotel Monterey in Kyoto, it as totally fine, quite posh really but the prices were not that bad at all, I think for every hotel we got a 3 for 2 nights deal or similar.

Anyway this place is pretty central so a good base for temples which are just everywhere in Kyoto.  The awesome Nishiki food market - http://www.kyoto-nishiki.or.jp/english/

And the Gion neighbourhood where you can get insane Wagashi!  http://kyotofoodie.com/kyoto-cafe-jouvencelle-gion/  (this blog has articles on many nice Wagashi shops in Kyoto).

From Kyoto you could also go to http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3915.html which is stunning.

I forgot to mention if you go to Harajuku then check out the Kiddyland store (seriously) which is a great toy store.

And if you want to go to the Ghibli museum then you must book in advance via a company in the UK.  We used http://www.japanspecialist.co.uk/ for Ghibli tickets and our JR Passes.

Oh yes do NOT get the cheap 'fresh' food from Lawsons, Family Mart or 7 Eleven, i.e the sushi wraps etc. Got stung twice from those.

Any other questions give me a shout.

Turkey was lovely. Depends whereabouts you go I guess. Being out of the Euro meant the money went quite a long way. Not as far as it did in Belgrade but I wouldn't really recommend taking your family there.
  • Almost forgot my favourite place to eat in Kyoto, very near to the hotel I mentioned, it's called 'What's'.  I'm not sure what the style is, perhaps Tiger can help, it comes from Korea.  Anyway you sit without shoes in a curtained booth with a grill built in to your table, you order cuts of beef which comes raw in bite size slices so you grill it yourself.  I went to a few of these in Kyoto, the beef was good in all of them, but this places was unreal.  The best beef I've ever had bar none, it was expensive but worth it.

Camping, lots and lots of camping.
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • Yep, I used to go camping with the family in Europe when I was a kid. Much cheaper way of holidaying. Find a nice campsite and I prefer it to staying in hotels anyway.

    Lauterbrunnen was particulary awesome.
  • I really fancy Tokyo next year. No idea where to go. Where did Bill Murray and Scarlett stay?
