The Greatest Hit 2.0 - Songs with punctuation marks in the title

Soundtracks not scores please. I'm thinking individual tracks and scenes they're used for but feel free to post about how good the overall soundtrack selection is for whatever.

OK, this is an even better one than I thought.

Bladerunner is a hard one to top for me.

Once Upon a Time in America is another. Morricone has to own this, surely?

Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • Not scores please chaps. We've done it because I remember winning with The Young Sherlock Holmes Suite and The Prince of Thieves Overture.

Existing songs selected for scenes in films, like Leader of the Pack innit.

If it's soundtracks then Scorsese is hard to top. The man thinks a certain way and holds onto songs for years.

Goodfellas and Casino are my picks.  (the same BJ dealer from Rainman by the way)

Opening credits are a masterpiece - used Bach's St. Matthew's Passion - showing the descent into hell.

  • The GOAT:

I love it when a song is actually integrated into the movie, and not just playing over the top.
  • Sudden realisation that I need to watch Trainspotting again asap. It's been so long I didn't even remember that bit at first.
  • This tune (and soundtrack in general) always cheers me up, love this scene too:

Will pump some Scorsese into the thread later.
  • I think that counts, right? Maybe not actually, perhaps it was made for the film? Either way it's a banger.

Sheffield band doing Mile End better than Blur ever could.

    x

  • The fuckin goat has arrived.
  • OK, there's a few absolute standouts with film OSTs.

Casino/Goodfellas as pointed out by the esteemed DavyK above. I love this because Scorcese got Robbie Robertson of The Band to pick the tracks!
Trainspotting is a fucking legendary OST
    Pulp Fiction
High Fidelity (Dry the Rain & Cold Blooded Old Times)
    Grosse Pointe Blank
    O Brother Where Art Thou?

If we're doing scenes, well that's seriously, seriously fucking tricky. Without including any from the list above, two immediately spring to mind but there's so many!!!

Needle in the Hay from The Royal Tenenbaums
Just Like Honey from Lost in Translation
  • Can't let DavyK's comment pass without mentioning that it was the legendary Saul Bass designed the title sequence for Casino.

Saul Bass, man. What a fucking designer.
  • Two fairly obvious Marty choices:

...but these days I think this is my favourite, just think the tune fits so well with the scene in terms of tone:

BUT WAIT... no actually it's probably tied with this, which is my favourite scene in the film I think:

  • I imagine intros would be ripe for this.

The Cosmic Castaway post title scene in Titan AE is great.

  • Gah you could probably pick any Goodfellas scene and it'd be a good shout.
  • Wouldn't class myself as a classical music guy (no objection to it, just not my go-to), but this tune often rattles around my head. It's from a different period but suits the scene perfectly imo, plus it's from Kubrick's best film:

  • Excellent shouts, Nick.

I'm ashamed to say I've never watched Mean Streets...
  • Well worth watching Coops, haven't seen it in probs 10 years but I'm sure it holds up still.
  • Mainly because i just watched it but I'd like to nominate the matrix soundtrack, while not totally brilliant, so suits the movie. I'd also put the crow soundtrack in there as well (oddly the crow is a better soundtrack to a lesser film)

Also, partly because its a favourite of a dear friend who only passed a short while ago who loved to watch the movie with me, i love the soundtrack to the cameron crowe version of vanilla sky. I know, its tom cruise and i know, the original is better but fuck that, the soundtrack works so well with the movie.

  • I was thinking of the matrix earlier when thinking about this thread, it does suit the film.
  • Same! I was obsessed with that film when it came out.
  • Same! I was obsessed with that film when it came out.

The first one held up well. Despite rumours to the contrary, i still think the second is a slow moving dirge of a film. Some great set pieces but very little "umph" to them. Having Neo as god character for much of the movie doesnt help.

Likely to do the third this weekend. Bring on the Smiths.

Back to soundtracks, I also think Guy Ritchies Snatch is really well done with soundtrack.

As for one of the worst - Captain Marvel. Not that the songs are bad but they just don't fit the actual film at all

  • Captain Marvel's soundtrack was heavily skewed towards women-led bands from the 90s. Which meant that you had some strange choices where it all felt a bit forced and #metoo.
  • The Just a Girl bit is awful.

Yeah - the lobby scene with the Propellorheads music is a good 'un.
