The Greatest Hit 2.0 - One song and why

This sounds about 95% the same as Fairytale of New York to my ears

Dirty Old Town is a cover too. It's a Ewan McColl song about Salford.

I did not know that. My vote can stay as-is anyway.

It's pretty much the definitive version and is a great shout.

Jackie Wilson for me. Never forgave him for knocking the Housemartins off the Christmas number one spot, despite it was way after he dies and he had nothing to do with it

  • An off-piste topic next.

Artists, albums or songs you're particularly fond of that you can directly attribute your discovery of to someone on this forum (or one of its previous incarnations).

I have at least a dozen things that could go in here that I'd like to buy certain badgers a beer for.
  • I'm sure that's happened at least once in 15 years but I can't remember at all.

Idles, with thanks to @tinrobot and @gremill.

  • Who found tobe? Remind me.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Have gav to thank for for first bad rabbits ep. Bangin.

Reckon I owe thanks to someone here for blood Orange too.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • i made about ten recommendations over in the "appreciation" thread and never got a single response.

I remember sending Darth Jim a double-CD package years ago which took me a month to carefully compile, to which his response a week later was, "thanks but no".

I remember Reg "quite liking" an Akira The Don track I sent him.  This appears to be my greatest success in nearly 20 years...

    Tim Ingham, Winterlight.

No idea who it was. It was in the ambient music thread. I added it to my Amazon wishlist and a daughter or Wifey bought it for me.

Gorgeous.  And calming to a troubled mind - something I have my share of.

Whoever you are. Thank you. :)

I recommended Depeche Mode covers for years, and then Johnny-come-Regly reckons he's right into 'em, telling the Edge as much like cock of the Online/Offline walk. (Letters, but the point stands.)

And here's me thinking this would be an affectionate Malkmus post.

  • That's an easy one for me, although there's been a fair few great recommendations from friends on here. However it has to be Gav and his recommendation of Father John Misty - it's a type of music that I'd not normally like but he's become one of my most listened to artists. For that I'll be eternally grateful:

  • I have a few of these, but first up.....thanks @Bob!  I think.  My memory is a bit sketchy and there's a possibility it was Olimite.  I had the first John Fullbright album, thought pretty good and worth it for the best tracks but I didn't fancy the second one, which was a bit corny/croony according to the review I read.  Shortly afterwards Bob offered the album in the FTAGH thread and I grabbed it.  That was in 2014, and it's probably in my top twenty albums of all time.  There's a massive chance I would've missed it completely otherwise.  Many thanks xx

  • Gotta thank my years working in hmv for these shouts, boys. Thanks but I'm fucking woeful at finding new stuff now I don't have weekly new releases to make playlists out of.
  • I think I have Nick to thank for turning me on to Orville Peck. Which led, eventually, to this TOTAL BANGER (even though it isn’t a track he personally recommended).

  • Thanks to Moot and his Songs In The Key Of D Minor playlist:

Actually, big ups to @afgavinstan for getting me switched on to these bad boys. I've been really feeling low about Frightened Rabbit this week (it was 3 years this week and one of my pupils family was best friends with Scott and have been finding it hard) and this isn't them, but it's some similar vibes.

If DarthJim was still here I'm sure he would be thanking me for getting him into Hanson *

    Spoiler:
  • They had frabbit support them in America, and Andy Hull (lead singer of MO) contributed to the tribute album. They're all good mates. Glad you're enjoying them, check out the album previous for their best work, imo (A Black Mile To The Surface) it is fucking incredible.
  • That album also deals very heavily with Hull's own feelings in becoming a father, so watch out man, it can be heavy in places. But damn, what a record.
  • A few more while I remember them....

Thanks to @Kow for putting Richard Thompson's Rumor & Sigh in an album club a few years back.  It's a great album, but the deeper dive it inspired gave me the song Poor Ditching Boy, which is a full goosebumps all-timer for me.

Thanks to @Brooks for suggesting Oil & Gold by Shriekback (which of course he didn't particularly like) and thanks to @Facewon for putting Sam Cooke's Teenage Sonata on a playlist once (and Tobe ofc, Jockin hasn't been topped by anyone since).  Thanks to @Tin_Robot for the glorious story songs playlist he made me once, in particular The Strange Case of Frank Cash and the Morning Paper by T Bone Burnett.

Thanks to Nick for the erratic and eccentric genius of Dan Reeder, who along with Adam Carroll is my fave new old find from the past couple of years.

    I LOVE IT.

Thanks to the hip hop crew for letting me know I'd been harsh on an Eric B & Rakim album when I did some mini reviews years ago.  Don't Sweat the Technique is now a firm favourite and the final third of that record is absolutely world class.  I think @JonB led that particular charge.

Thanks to Bugul for a vast number of things, but Christy Moore's Live at the Point is the main one.  Thanks to @Gman fof the Emmylou album Wrecking Ball - it's in the top ten.

    More to follow....
  • Silke's impeccable recommendations have got me into quite a few things, but Viagra Boys is probably the biggie here.

    Thank you Sir.

  • Heh, turns out it was me that brought tobe to the table. Thanks to tiny desk vid.

Big shout to Brooks for the denzel curry zuu rec.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • More:
@Funstain for John Grant (and then I went backwards to The Czars, oh my)
Tin & @Diluted_Dante for Better Oblivion Community Centre (and Phoebe Bridgers)
@Tempy for Clipping and (iirc) The Future of the Left
Tin again for the Bonnie Prince Billy song Look Backwards on Your Future, Look Forward to Your Past
@Roujin for Lady Leshurr (I think) and the Wiley track 6 in the Bloodclart Morning
    @Cockhead for Lucero's recent albums
