    Spoiler:

Thanks for the heads up. I managed to book optimal seating before Cineworld informed the masses.

(Not in lIeMAX I hasten to add.)
  • They can fuck off with that pricing!
Come with g if you want to live...
  • Yep. Premium Bond can get in the premium bin.

Did I read correctly over the weekend that a black lady is going to be the next 007? Something in the script about her being in this latest one as an agent and taking over the 007 licence at the end?

If so , why not appoint a different 00 licence and spawn a new franchise?  Otherwise the name James Bond is surplus to requirements.  Hmmm.

I thought it would have a bit more joy and fun to it. A bit more sparkle. A bit more inventive and interesting use for the violence instead of violence for violence sake. It ended up being a bit messy and mismatched with its scene flow too, just like the previous one. Bit of a let down really. I guess the Marvel machine really does have better staff writers to mold their stories.

Hero team films are damn hard. Those Avengers films were miracles. I'd rather they stick with a character and do it right.

  • Davy, that's been the rumour ever since this was announced as the last Craig Bond. Has anyone actually seen the new one to say that's a fact?
I think it's just internet rumour-mill stuff. For now at least.

Yeah I think DC has always been trying to play catch up and copy with Marvel instead of just doing their own thing and trying to do a good job of that.
The more off-centre stuff like Joker or the Paterson Batman hold more promise to me than an OTT effects film from DC. Marvel has a monopoly on that, just let them do that and do something else.
  • Could have been the headline to this article that Davy saw which does rather suggest the new 007 is a black lady.
    https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2021/sep/12/lashana-lynch-first-female-007-i-never-had-a-plan-b-no-time-to-die

    I didnt read the article.
The only worthwhile thing to do with Bond is to make it a mid-century period spy franchise. Change it up, modernise it and its just another spy movie of which there are many better already.

Yep. Her beautiful face takes up the whole front cover of yesterday's Guardian magazine.

Let Bond be Bond. And roll it back to cold war. Forget competing with Bourne or trying something stupid like changing the gender of the character - which reeks of shark jumping to the max. Make new characters if you want to balance the scales.

  • I would add though that I strongly suspect Bond/007 will always be a man because there is far too much money in it.
There are still plenty of Partridge types that think an Omega watch or an Aston Martin bumbag makes them god's gift to women.

That’s mental. Just checked and it’s £15 quid for IMAX recliner option up here. Those seats were a tenner pre COVID though.

Also, Premium Bond is a great joke, solid work wook!

Flora and I are going to see Bond in its THREE FUCKING HOURS (almost) as our first cinema trip since 2020.

I'm not a fan of making the Bond series a cinematic universe. I'm okay of some things, for example having future Bonds ref what happened in Lazenby movie, as needed. But the Craig run has become an absolute mess, and Skyfall was saved by great performances and set pieces against a turgid plot. I'm ready for this era to end. But that being said, I also adore Bond and want to see where it goes next. But that fucking length....

Yeah. As out of date as some things are, I think we should let things be what they are - largely speaking.  The issue of representation needs to be addressed by more creation than adaption. Adaption doesn't always do minorities any favours.

It requires too much suspension of belief even for a Bond film. Sure - she could kick ass - but not her male bad guy equivalent; especially with the intensity that modern fights now are in films. That MI fight with Henry Cavill for example - Jesus - that was brutal.  (heh - even though a lady with a gun finished it).

Of course there's no reason why a different type of story could accommodate her with more stealth, sniping, driving etc - a female Leon for example - but then it isn't a Bond film.

I mean to touch on that by saying I generally find Bond to be pap and couldn't care less if a dog played the lead, but then I'm a big Mission Impossible guy, and if Ethan Hunt became Ethel Hunt, give a shit.

A Metroid scenario would be a good 'un.  We've had Lara too for a while. OK the films aren't much cop but it can work. Just don't try and elbow into something as overtly male as Bond.

Why not? Does it matter? For some reason Bond seems to be sacrosanct but a lot of it is some ropey shite. We got a good start to the Craig franchise but it severely went downhill after Casino Royale. Wouldn’t hurt to launch a 007 series of films.

Actually it would be great for a bunch of top directors to do an anthology with all their takes on bond like Love and Robots. I’d watch the shit out of that.

Bond has always been tosh. The earlier sexist, macho ones with Connery were peak. Early Moore was good (Live and Let Die) but it's been reducing in quality ever since with the occasional good one.

I just don't see the point of hijacking a franchise when new ones can be written. Risk of alienating core fans (if such a thing exists) and annoying the new audience with tokenism. Either way it's flogging a dead horse. MI and Bourne do it now. Shrug. Bond would be better retreating to a misogynistic mid-20C with a wink at the camera. Or drop the misogyny and go grey and beige in the Cold War Le Carre style with very brief but gory encounters (which I would love)

Little Big Man is a 1970 film starring Dustin Hoffman as a 120yo telling the (tall) tales of his life through the mid 1800s America to mid 20th C. One can see its influence on Forrest Gump as the character goes through life experiencing coincidences that propel him through a series of adventures, meeting a few historical figures such as Wild Bill Hickock and General Custer.

He starts off being raised by the Indians that killed his family and then moves between the native Indian and white worlds, but always returning to his tribe.

There's a great supporting cast including Faye Dunnaway and a host of quality character actors. It's mostly told with a great deal of humour but there are dark sections - one in particular of a raid on an Indian camp by the US cavalry - but it never ceases to be engaging and entertaining.

A quirky but very fine film from that early era of great American cinema.

Still great. Made at that perfect time where effects were getting good but only when used smartly and with a mix of practical and CG. It all holds up (well mostly) because the characters are fun and so is the story.

    88. The Hobbit 1
The only real problem for me with these is that they ended up being made as prequels to LotR so, like so many prequels, you get the explanation for how this character got that thing (don't care) and 'hey, remember this shot/moment from those other movies!' (Gandalf 'you shall not pass'ing the boulder with the trolls can get fucked). I don't mind a big epic version of the hobbit but don't take me out of the film with your little references.
    [5]

I have the version of The Hobbit trilogy with all the appendices. I'm keen to watch it and see what it was like behind the scenes. I'm guessing less talk about how all the stuff was made a ready to go a year before filming like it was with LotR.
  • Corridor have done a couple of bits on The Mummy recently on their VFX artists React show. Worth watching if you havent already.
  • Any film with Brendan Fraser and Arnold Vosloo gets a watch from me.
  • Just kind of a shame that Fraser, as a big fella, put himself through all that - he had a real talent for physical comedy and action, but his knees and back are fucked now. The bigger you are, the more conditioning you need before you can throw yourself around like that.
