As much as SMB3 > SMW is defensible, I have to reverse that. SMB3 is an enormous development in 2D platforming but too much of it is disposable. SMW is SMB3 perfected.

I really didn't like Mario 3. Just something about how the scale of everything seemed slightly off, its colours too pastelly and vague. Plus I hate scrollkillers in platformers (hi, Sonic 2).

I thought the original was okay (coming to it late), but as documented, I've only ever loved Mario Kart and Mario 64. And A Link to the Past from the Zeldas. Don't do the Zeldas.

I am also no fan of Mario 3. Every level is 12 seconds long and the colour scheme is wrong.

SMB3 is a hodge podge of ideas. Most of the big ideas stuck (world map, suits, flight). The power down system is too forgiving and it's over generous with 1ups which takes the sting out of the challenge. But the game was on a cart with no backup saves so that was intentional in all liklihood. SMW is a refinement that is still peerless in my opinion, but I still consider SMB3 to be one of the great 2D platformers.

I can remember reading a regular SMW column in a mainstream newspaper - the writer giving a short progress report as s/he played it. It only lasted a few weeks if I remember correctly but I'd be surprised if any game would inspire that outside the gaming press.

Which did you play first Reg, Mario 3 or SMW?

I find I lean towards Mario 3 because it was such a big improvement over Mario 1 & 2. The levels didn't feel short at the time as it was head and shoulders above most NES games as an overall package.

But, if I had gone from SMW to SMB3 then I think that would have felt like a step down.

    Both are amazing games really.
  • I'd agree with that completely.
  • 1. Mario Galaxy 2

    Right then, the correct order:
    SMW (obviously)
    MG2
    64
    MG1
    SMB3
    SM3DW
    SM3DL
    SMB1
    Sunshine
    NSMBx

Clearly no YI or SMB2 or Lost Levels, because.

And no Odyssey mainly cos I ain't played even a second of it.

Mario Maker says hi, as does Mario Run, but I don't want to get Reg shirty.

Mario maker is too powerful for this game. Would be #1 comfortably.

You are correct in your assumptions that I played world first, my first Mario game overall.

Ram's list very much looks like a ranking by influence.

I find it hard to have a hard disagree with anyone's list to be honest.

  • it's certainly how much they influenced me! ;)
i've not played any of the 3d world/land games...recent marios for me are the galaxy games on wii and odyssey on switch. odyssey didn't really do it for me. galaxy might objectively be the 'best' overall but not it my heart.  the top 3 for me are burned into my mind with rose tinted goggles welded firmly on.

  • Shocked that World was Reg’s 1st. Always assumed Reg had been incubated in a NES, such is the Nintendo love.

This. What a series. Unless I spot Sunshine or SMB2 in a top tier everyone's doing it right.

Fwiw I think SMB3 might be the best pure platformer of the lot.

The relative emptiness of M64's levels are tech limits but it created an air of solitude and mystery. It was the last game that really embued a sense of wonder in me.

    Galaxy is just sheer entertainment.

I reckon I could read 'a case for...' in terms of any of the above being the pinnacle of the series and not think whoever wrote it was a raving loony. Coin hunt co-op in the Wii/Wii U games is legit.

    Not played the NSMB games.

Ordered based on how they stack up today. All games of the games were amazing when they came out (except maybe sunshine, which has always been a bit off), so it’s tough to put them into an order when all I've got to go on is my memories from the time. I’m not convinced that the order between the top 3, though I’m sure I think that G2 is better than G1.

When I was a little lad I remember asking my parents for (and getting) SMB2 for Christmas, not realising that I'd been playing SMB3 at my mates house. Sad times, but I think I was 9 or 10 at the time so I should really have known better.
  • real lack of MM2 in the lists. I assume because barely anyone has played it. How it can not be number 1 i have no idea.
