Some friends of mine were involved in setting up a gay club in Kiev not so long ago. I can't imagine that will be allowed to continue.

I've surprised myself by how little interest I have taken in this story as it's been unfolding, and I certainly don't have much appetite to trace sources in the hope of establishing which of the competing narratives bears more truth or validity. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Really? Jesus. Fuck. I can't imagine my friends would be very far down that list. They have tried to recreate Berghain in Kiev, and by most accounts they have succeeded. I am told the establishment of this club has been considered to be quite a political statement, and it regularly attracts protests -

What is it you need clarifying? The claims about why this is happening, or info regarding what is actually going on on the ground now? -

A bit of everything really. There are a lot of competing narratives floating about and I don't have the energy nor inclination to examine them in detail. I just have to put some degree of faith in someone else's interpretation, but I really don't know whose.

@DmitryOpines And NATO mentioned only once in his 6k word essay on why Ukraine isn't a real country last year likely written when the planning for the invasion was taking place. NATO stuff was probably only added to the speech/negotiations as he knew it was the subject of debate in the West. -

Take my input with a pinch of salt/degree of scepticism, as I am the designated western/NATO shill, but essentially Russia (Putin) are using a false pretext of protecting Russian speaking regions in eastern Ukraine to launch and all out invasion on the entirety of Ukraine. It's hard to keep track though as the reasons keep shifting. Essentially though Putin wants to restore the majesty of the Russian Empire/Soviet Union, and this is the first part of that process.

There will be lots of competing narratives, and non of them will hold much water, and some of them will be contradictory.
NATO aggression
NATO expansionism
Ukrainian aggression
Ukrainian weakness
Ukraine isn't even a proper country
Western decay
Liberal moral decay
Western interference in Ukrainian democracy

Non of these reasons are intended to convince western audiences though, they are almost exclusively for the home audience. And they don't really care if they are believable either.
