@DmitryOpines And NATO mentioned only once in his 6k word essay on why Ukraine isn't a real country last year likely written when the planning for the invasion was taking place. NATO stuff was probably only added to the speech/negotiations as he knew it was the subject of debate in the West.

A bit of everything really. There are a lot of competing narratives floating about and I don't have the energy nor inclination to examine them in detail. I just have to put some degree of faith in someone else's interpretation, but I really don't know whose.
edit- okay it seems some of these narratives don't hold much water
