What is the most DVDish DVD.
‹ Previous12345
  • This is probably dumb

This is inspired by some of the chat in the film thread but I wonder if it’s possible to attach nostalgia of media to the media they came on.

For example for me the most Iconic DVD as a mix of DVD and representing the format would be something like The Matrix. Not only was it a release around that time but it felt like it captured the best spirit of that format with its extra features and so on.

It maybe it doesn’t work but whatever let’s see.

    For me

    CD - Michael Jackson Dangerous
    Vinyl LP - Jackson Thriller
    VHS - Predator
    DVD - The Matrix
    PC CD-Rom - Monkey Island or Half-Life
    Blu-Ray - Spider-Man 2
    HD-DVD- Peter Jackson’s King Kong
mp3 - Trick Me by Kelis
Streaming Video - House of Cards
    Cartridges (Console) - Sonic 1
    Cartridges (Handheld) - Tetris
Disc console - Resident Evil 2.
    Tapes - Bad Michael Jackson.

So a lot of Jackson but I guess that makes sense really.
    It’s obviously kind of nebulous.

DVD - As I said in the film thread. Blade for me. Everything about the region 1 version was top notch with great extras and menu design. I guess also because it was my first decent DVD. I recall my player came with Broderick Godzilla and it was as basic as the movie is bad.

I’ll have to think about the rest.
  • I think the first proper CD album I had was Gorillaz' first album, which is great. And I really liked all the artwork in the sleeve, I used to spend quite a bit of time drawing trying to mimic the style of the faces.
  • In terms of cartridges the Game Boy Camera was fucking wild.
  • I still have some DVDs that have those really stupidly complicated menus, like the Simpsons Season 2 dvd where you have to cycle through some hilarious head swaps before you can play a damn episode

  • Double sided is a great shout.
  • Transformers is my HD-DVDish HD-DVD. That thing was everywhere.

Still got my Xbox HD-DVD drive somewhere and about 30 of the doomed HD-DVDs.

    They're worthless.

I listened to my first director's commentary for about half an hour, and never again. Seemed like a great idea until you got to their execution.

Best extras was The Lord of The Rings making of docs. Lasted nearly as long as the trilogy but so good.
  • Dvd

    The Gift (Katie Holmes)
    Go (Also Katie Holmes)

And maybe I.D (unsure on pronunciation) and Ron Howard's Grand Theft Auto, but only because they were ridiculous giveaways with State of Emergency and GTA III when I worked in Game and all local stores/charity shops were swimming in copies.
  • CD- Dr Dre 2001
Feels like everyone had this in their car, at parties, floors, coffee tables, used to roll joints on, prestine, smashed up to fuck. It just seemed to be omnipresent during my teens.

    DVD- The Matrix
The movie ushered in a new era of mainstream action just like the tech. Like many my first DVD player was the PS2 and the Matrix fits perfectly with being played on a games console.

Floppy Disc- Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 Amiga. Hooky copy with photocopied A4 manual stapled at the sides.

Cartridge- 6 in 1 Mega Games Mega Drive.
After school special rarely needed swapping out between SoR, Golden Axe and Sonic. Runner up Micro Machines J Cart.

    PC CD Rom - Encarta.
    Search, print, homework done.

    VHS- Hook
    Bangarang!

  • Great thread, this.

For me “DVD” evokes memories of the age of Asian and art house flicks finally becoming accessible in the UK. Being able to pop into HMV and see what the deals were - 2 Criterion Collection for 15 quid? Yes please.

My love of Asian cinema started with taping stuff off late night channel 4, but it was DVD that saw me able to build a proper collection. The likes of Infernal Affairs, The Ring, The Grudge etc.

Anime, Bollywood, French New Wave. Yes, you could get them before, but they were a hassle, low quality and expensive. DVD changed that. So, for me, the DVDest DVD is Infernal Affairs. A movie I loved, and still love, that wouldn’t have been available to me otherwise.

The Spinal Tap dvd is the greatest. Firstly there's almost an hour of extra footage, some of which is absolutely brilliant. Also the commentary to the whole film is done by the band, completely in character.

    Bet that looks proper good.
  • Infernal Affairs is also a great shout - that era of importing videos is huge. Things like ringu and what not.

  • Yeah I long for the day for something that is as engaging to record and easily played. I think USB could have been that but the act of making is too easy and the ability to play conveniently harder weirdly given the name.

I am sad that minidisc didn’t break out of the windows 98 era.

Double sided is a great shout.

Exorcist DVD was a flippy - the extra features being on "side B". Brilliant "making of" doc on that by the way.

Matrix is a strong shout but there is competition from the Alien Quadrilogy and The Godfather Collection. All with splendid extras, as was the "this time it really is" final cut of Bladerunner which has all the different versions, not to mention its making of doc which elevates the form.

I am a fan of a good commentary. There used to be more of them, they are an excuse to watch a film you could act in yourself.

Python stuff's menus are a delight. :) Thinking about the Holy Grail one.
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • The Total Recall commentary is my favourite of all time. Paul Verhoeven and Arnie talking broken English at eachother for the duration of the movie. Can't remember if it was on DVD though or blu-ray? I just got the 4k version as well recently, looks astounding, eye-poppingly good detail!

    Right let’s do this properly.

    CD - Nirvana - Nevermind
Vinyl LP - Prince - Purple Rain
VHS - Return of The Jedi
    DVD - Blade
    PC CD-Rom - X-Wing vs Tie Fighter
Blu-Ray - Never really cared about Blu-Ray - I’d already started to buy digital content at this time.
HD-DVD - Ha ha ha - I came very close to buying one.
mp3 - I’d bought about a hundred singles but first album was To The Five Burroughs - The Beastie Boys
Streaming Video - Pornhub - I honestly can’t think of my main Netflix experience. Before that I’d bought Band of Brothers on Apple and streamed it nearly every year.
Cartridges (Console) - Super Streetfighter II: Turbo Edition (US Import)
    Cartridges (Handheld) - Advance Wars
    Disc console - Tekken
Tapes - The Top 40 on a Sunday
  • Haha.

    Edit: at eye-poppingly good.
