Really? $300 doesn't seem all that much to me.
I'm not sure how expensive the final retail units will be, but IIRC they were aiming around that price. 
Not sure how manufacturing will scale or whatever, but if it hits for around £300 it becomes kinda tempting - not impulse-buy-no-brainer levels of tempting, but hell, Hawken with surround head vision tracking stuff would be pretty cool - although a fast action game like that would probably be the most vom-inducing you could get. Well no, maybe Mirror's Edge would be worse.

Anyways, guaran-fucking-teed Microsoft will be keeping an eye on this - there's gonna be someone plugging kinect up with one of these things for lawd knows what VR silliness could be conjured.

Having not clicked any links yet, I'm sitting imagining a Project Zero clone with the movement on a stick and torch/gun on a Wiimote/Move pointer thing. I'd probably be to frightened to play it.

The dev kit is $300 and it is constructed. The un-constructed only had 100 backers available and was more of a hobby project. It was also $275. Also it is a Dev Kit, so it isn't for consumer use, the idea is to give it to folk who will develop it. 

If the hardware really is super simple, then it will be like a 360 pad - you'll get numerous versions that are all within the specifications required to run the software. I'd assume that if it is successful and gets big industry players to back it, it will come out for a lesser price, but as it stands it is only around £175-£200... the Kinect for Windows Devkit and SDK costs the same as that, and the tech has been around for longer and is less applicable. Rift looks like it could technically be applied to any first person experience.

Playing devil's advocate here as I currently have no interest, but it isn't as expensive as you're suggesting.

I reckon someone in the Porn industry will be getting to work on some kind of application fairly swiftly.

Yeah - the actual physical strain on eyes and motion sickness stuff are the things that are making me dubious about the tech.

Would be kinda fun for flight sims, but I think the real selling point will be FPS or games where you are an embodied entity in a navigable 3D world - Doom probably one of the best games to use for a tech demo really; the tech is probably the ultimate way to really get stuck straight into the middle of an "atmospheric" FPS game. Imagine Silent Hill or something like that in VR 3D where you literally have to keep looking over your shoulder behind you - would fill some kecks, for sure.

I think so. Ideally, the Rift should just enable camera movement and so player observation that isn't tied to anything the player is 'holding'.

Typed before, typing again - I want a nunchuck A-stick for movement, and a lightgun/Nintyremote for aiming and shooting. The headgear can takes care of the rest, including lean/pop-up and ting.
