    I DEFINITELY DIDN'T SAY THAT.
  • A very productive afternoon I must say.

    Notes on the list -

These are games that have stayed with me, that I remember having lost hours to or lead to new friendships or just helped fight the boredom.

I never owned a Dreamcast so felt it unfair to include those titles, same goes for other Sega consoles for that matter.  I've also tried to choose only 1 title per series per console, so I loved by Galaxies but 2 just edges it.

I found it interesting that the DS is home to more of my favourites than any other console, that truly was a special machine.

Compiling the list has made me want to revisit some of these too!

  • Awesome, will add the lists on this page later.

    Thanks a lot.
  • X-box 360
Outrun 2006 - bought several versions but I think the HD version one stole my heart the most. Still love to play this
Gears of War - Though call between first and second for me but first one always felt more solid
Call of Duty 2 - Sold me on the need for a 360
Geometry Wars 2 - Retro Evolved - But this was actually the game I bought a 360 for (honest) I was hooked on the mini game in PGR on xbox
Halo: Reach - I've never clicked with Halo online but Reach was the closest. I also really enjoyed the solo player
Pac Man DX - Late night one more go sessions destroyed my vision
Vanquish - The only negative to this is the cut scens in the single player mode. Otherwise, flawless
Walking Dead Season One - It is quite the emotional heft isn't it?
Bioshock 2 - Honestly prefered the gameplay to both the original and the horrible infinite. Some of the Big Sister battles were epic
Guitar Hero 3 - Score attack heaven, the choice of tunes edges it over GH2.
Batman - Arkham City - My favourite single player "story" game ever. Completed many times. Full of content. The combat rooms are addictive as titan
Batman - Arkham Asylum - Not as good as City, despite what you may think but still fantastic

    Amiga 500
IK + - I love the positional sense of the combat, the animation and the three way twist is frantic.
Turrican 2 - Shooter heaven. Theres an emulated PC version sitting on my laptop. Still rocks. Actually dropped my jaw - never remember the Amiga putting out such arcade quality
North & South - maybe not the greatest game but multiplayer with friends was supreme fun
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - I got utterly lost in this as a kid.
Sim City - Wonderful fun, but I could never resist the temptation to cause an earthquake once I had a nuclear plant up and running
Sensible Soccer WOS - Not just a fantastic multiplayer but a brilliant solo game. The amiga game was the best version for me
Rainbow Islands - A great game but this is a nostalgic one for me. When my grandad died when I was twelve, after hearing the news and feeling depressed I was stuck in limbo while the adults sorted things out. Slotted this disk in and the bright colours and tunes helped in an odd way.
Speedball 2 - A rare sports action game that I only ever played in Solo player and love all the more for
Lemmings - easy to dismiss but this was my first Amiga Game (got the cartoon classics pack for christmas) and it hooked me qui

    Arcade (some emulation)
Street Fighter Alpha 3 - It's a very though call between this and Saturn ALpha 2 as to which is the best of the Alpha series. This just about edges it.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 4 player cabinet. 4 Mates. I want to be Raph.
WWF Wrestlefest - As this list will show, I'm a wrestling fan. Wrestlefest still gets booted up every now and again when certain friends pop over.
R-type - Still looks quite weird and wonderful today and the sounds are super nostalgic for me
Daytona - I may knock the soon arriving 3, but you cant beat the sound and fury of 4 daytona machines side by side.
Bubble Bobble - On a ferry to the isle of man, I had to be escorted away from this by my dad when I was very young, otherwise I would have no money left for the actual holiday.
Shinobi - Pixel perfect at times, I'm still playing this via mame. First level is up there with the best in terms of introducing you to the game

    C64
Barbarian - excellent 2 player, the animation holds up. As does the spinning neck chop.
Platoon - This is an odd choice but it was one of Oceans better multi-level cinema tie ins. It's very atmospheric and the unfairness of early 8bit games suits the film really well
Ivan 'Ironmans' Stewart Super Off Road - A better version of Championship Sprint. Dont know if it would play well today but I have great memories
Rambo : First Blood Part 2 - So many weapons, you can destroy everything and there's a helicopter gunship battle. What not to like?
Yie Ar Kung Fu - Actually prefer the c64 version. Played this with a friend for a summer as we slowly defeated all the different bad guys.

    Dreamcast
Resident Evil Code Veronica - The best of the traditional RE games
Metropolis Street Racer - I remeber it as being a bit glitchy in parts but this felt like racing had taken a huge step up when I played it.

    Nintendo DS
Advance Wars: Dual Strike - Would love to say the first one but this was the only one I had and completed. Still epic
Yu Gi Oh - Nightmare Troubodar - It's a card battle game but I was strangely drawn to the world of Yu Gi Oh and this scratched an itch. Got played a lot.
Wario Ware - Touched  - brilliant party game. Never play it when drunk though - everyone hogs the machine
New Super Mario Bros  - I know it gets panned but I took it on holiday and loved every minute of it. It also got my wife into mario games
Pokemon Diamond - Havent played many pokemon games to be honest, but I did love this

    Gameboy
Tetris  - I didn't actually own this but one mate on our street got a gameboy (quite the achievement back in the day) and everyone pestered him for a loan so we all battled to get top score. It's perfect but fits so well to the gameboy

    Megadrive
Streets of Rage 2 - The best megadrive game. Still holds up. Looks, sounds and plays brilliantly
Shinning Force - My first game of this type. Never played much of the others but this was very engaging. Still remember unleashing Zylo.
Jungle Strike - I'd also rate Desert Strike highly buy Jungle has more variety. Awful last level though.

    MSX
Eric & The Floaters - I was thinking I had to get a Bomberman game in here but then I thought of this game and the laughs we all had watching my mum panic while playing it. It wins.

    Nintendo 64
WWF No Mercy - Second Best wrestling game ever, came at a great time with a fantastic roster.
WWF Attitude - I dont think this gets near the love it should. For its time it was far ahead of the other wrestling games and the audience reaction to using the same move over and over was a neat touch
F-Zero X - So fast... Jaw dropped many a times
Super Mario 64 - Havent tried to go back really as I dont want my memory tarnished but it was such a wonderful exploration
Golden Eye - Fab Multiplayer and Solo game. One hit kills was the best way to play
Perfect Dark - oddly, no-one I knew got into this despite the golden eye love. So I mostly played it in Solo mode but still loved it to bits.

    NES (emulated)
Super Mario Bros - Was going to put this in the Snes collection as I had it on all stars but emmulation has given me access to the NTSC 8 bit version - and it's like crack. Great game to have on a laptop

    PC (various)
Prince of Persia - I loved the original, it was a great run all the way to the finish
The Secret of Monkey Island 1 & 2 - technically first played on the amiga, but a steam sale let me get the collection pack and I'm slowly working my way through them
Championship Manager 01/02 - See Below
Football Manager 2006 - See Below
Football Manager 2014 - Hard to pick a winner, I've had quite a few versions but these 3 all got massive play time and are different enough, just about. It's a wonderful series but I'm at a lost where they take it.
Spec Ops - The Wire - Very good set pieces matched with surprisingly good gunplay
Doom - I think at the time I had to shrink the screen to 3/4 to get it to run fast enough. Worth it.
X-Com Enemy Within - I've yet to pick up the sequel, but I've played through this quite a bit. Always manages to keep me engrossed
Transformers Devastation - I like transformers and this was a dream come through.
Hotline Miami - Dirty, wonderful game
Asteroids - This is going back a bit but I loved the momenteum to the movement in Asteroids.
Missile Command - Oldie as well. Played the PC so much with the mouse, I couldnt last more than a couple of rounds with the arcade.

    Playstation 2
Capcom vs SNK 2 - it's unbalanced but thats half the fun. Wonderful team gameplay
Rocky - Super solid fighting game. Only bettered by UFC of late
Def Jam: Fight for New York - A wrestling game but with serious flair. Looked great and played slick.
WWE Here Comes the Pain - The best wrestling game. Top Roster, good controls, so many modes. Worked very well in 2 player.
Burnout 2 - The best arcade racer. Getting constant burnouts through a level took nerves of steel but it was so worth it.
Colin McRae 3 - I went through a phase of really enjoying off road games and this one was great
Hitman 2 Silent Assassin - There's a shocking amount of replay in this game.
Metal Gear Solid 2 - I'm not much of an MGS fan but I did enjoy this. Looked amazing for the times
Silent Hill 2 - More a good experience than a good game. The last hour was haunting
Pro Evo Soccer 6 - Pro evo 4 was the best PES multiplayer. 6 has the best master league
Gradius V - Stunning to look at, very imaginative and hard as nails
Devil May Cry - The enemy variety and the evolution of your moveset hooked me early doors
Grand Theft Auto 3 - I'd love to be cool and go Vice CIty but fact is this is the one I played the most and actually finished
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 - It was this or SSX Tricky and I think Tony wins with the sheer amount of combos.

    Playstation 3
UFC  Demo - You read that right. You could play a demo of this with Chuck Liddell and another guy, cant rememebr. I do remember on the comedown night after a hectic weekend, this sorted the men from the boys.
Call of Duty 4: MW - The best FPS? Maybes.
Call of Duty: Mordern Warfare 3 - Gets hated but I was in from day one on this so I really got into multiplayer. Flawed but the hours lost is almost shameful. Almost
Red Dead Redemption  - A close second to the batman games as a "story" game. I think I completed to 97%. Gutted its not on PC.
Far Cry 3 - The main game is a bit eh but the island itself and the side missions are brilliant. I had a lot of fun just exploring the island. Looked great as well.
Uncharted 2 - Very good shooter, linked with very good cinema inspired set pieces.
Dead Space 2 - I loved this one. Just clicked with it. The Alien game I always wanted but never got.

    Sega Saturn
Sega Rally - It's not arcade perfect but this is the version that I sink hours into cutting seconds off lap times.

    Super Nintendo
Street Fighter 2 Turbo - Toss up between the arcade version or this. The Snes version affected my ability to play stick so I'm thinking its the winner
    Super Mario World - Yep
Mario Kart - Still my favourite of the kart games. There's a purity here to the design.
Super Probotector - Ooooh, guns, guns, guns!

    Wii
Wii Sports - Specifically bowling and gold. if edge had balls this was a ten. Of course its not that good but it did revolutionise things for a while. Poor follow prevents this from being the touch off point for continued waggle controls. So good, it killed it's own system in my eyes. You didnt need anything else
Super Mario Galaxy - well, except this. I havent played 2 yet but this is probably the best Mario. And thats an achievement

    Xbox
Soul Calibur 2 - I really wanted to go for the DC version of SC1 but 2 is soooo good. Huge depth, a great roster and looks stunning.
Rallisport Challenge 2 - Another off-roader, this was pretty damn good as an arcade twist on the off road scene
Project Gotham Racing - 2 may have had online but 1 had such a smooth frame rate.
Halo - Destroyed many a future FPS for me because Halo actually had enemies you had to react to and engage as opposed to line up and shoot.
Prince of Persia - Sands of Time - No wait, thats not how it happened... dreamy brilliance
Psi Ops - Mindgate Conspiracy - Not sure how many people played this but while everyone banged on about HL2s physics, Psi Ops just let you fling stuff about with ease using the power of the mind
Pro Evo Soccer 4 - For multiplayer, the mechanics of 4 win for me. It's very attacking favoured and always felt faster than the others. Multiplayer was rarely bettered.
Fable - It may not have become what they wanted it to be but Fable is like a wander through a (discount) disc world. I think it took me 8 hours to finish but I liked it so much, I never traded it until the whole xbox went.
    SFV - reddave360

Hello RedDave2. I think we might be friends.
Mostly an idiot. Live: thedarthjim / Instagram: mrjalco / Twitter: @MrJalco
  • I started contemplating my Spectrum and ST favourites about five o'clock this morning, and ended up falling down a slight YouTube hole of Batman The Movie, Powerdrift and Chase HQ titles. I'll have to resurrect this thread from page 8 by the time I'm ready.
  • Also, I need to sleep at some point. Please.
