So, my house purchase, which has been ongoing since January, just fell through.
The one thing that was left before we could exchange was a new valuation (old one had expired as the process has taken so long). Valuation comes back and it's three grand higher than the old one (from £47k to £50k). Seller decides that selling is  bad move as "hey, my house value is still going up!" Offers me to buy at this new price or he'll just withdraw from the market. I don't have the time or inclination to remortage, revalue for my banks sake (nothing guaranteed that they'll even agree with the 50k value, and leave me stuck not being able to borrow the cash anyway).
Naturally, I fell pretty terrible. I did everything right, I was patient, and it still got messed up.
Tell me about your own house moving horrors to let me know it's not so bad. -
It's a fucking nightmare, but I find selling your house is the hardest part. Mine was all agreed, buying mine pulled out like a mook, leaving us with £600 pissed up the wall in fees for valuations and a survey.Â
We're now looking into buying a new build, part exchanging my house in the process.Â

Dunno if I'm being thick here but where can you buy somewhere for £50K? We would love to buy somewhere but working in London makes things tough. £500K is more like it

@Funkstain, it was a 40% share of a flat. Sorry, I should have said that.
I'm just buying, thankfully. Yeah, I've lost about £600 in fees, too. Solicitor is even holding my deposit, things were that close to being done.
The whole process is stupid. In Scotland, once you start, that's it, you're legally obligated to complete. Sounds wonderful. None of this dicking about.
There seems to be some good news, though. Another flat in the same block is up for sale, same 40% share too. Solicitors should be able to keep the lions share of the paperwork intact. -
If you don't mind sleeping in your car, I think you can buy parking spaces in London for around £50k a pop.

My gf has moved something like 30+ times in her life. 3 years at our current place is a record for her. Every time the garden/courtyard looks a little shabby she's on realestate.com.au.
I hate moving, and we're in a pretty good place, really. I hope not to move any time soon.

My house out here is worth something like £100k.
It's a 3 bed + office house, 2 car garage, pool, steam room, hot tub, large master suite, etc etc in a lovely suburb of west LV with permanent sunshine.
We looked at a large, 3000sqft house near by.  4 big bedrooms, a study, lovely kitchen, pool, gated community, access to private park, all sorts.  £180k.
£100k would buy me what back in the UK, a dingy end terrace in Swansea?  For the cost of the sort of houses I was looking at before we moved, I could buy a 6 bed 4 bath semi-mansion here.  I might just stay. -

My 2 bedroom apartment cost me over double what you spent. It's not a shot hole by any stretch but it's still a 2 bedroom apartment with 1100sqft.

I think this house is my 28th one. I've lost count a bit. I'm really looking forward to finally settling down in one place in a few years time and Elm and I are going to start saving for a house deposit soon. Joy.

Some houses here are now available to buy for less than it cost to build them. Â I seriously will buy one as a holiday home when we head back, but seeing the prices here it's impossible not to be fed up with UK property prices.
£250k in Scotland will get you a very nice old stone farmhouse, like this.

The same amount in London puts you in this 1 bedroom box in Eltham, which may be nice, but it's a 1 bedroom box:
What do you get in Nevada?

4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, pool, hot tub, garden, central ac, 3 car garage, vaulted ceilings, granite countertops, a separate formal dining room, 30 seconds from a great private elementary school, and 20 minutes from the Las Vegas strip.  Oh, and your mortgage'll be at 2.9% fixed for 6 years (they'll even do a 100% one), and after buying it, you've saved £22 000 over the 2 homes in the UK because I actually couldn't find one expensive enough to do the comparison.
Did I mention the permanent sunshine yet? Â Now, I can see the attraction of the stone cottage, but the draw of just buying homes here is pretty huge. -

Yes, for another 18 months - 2 years or so. Â Thing is, as Wookie and Frosty can attest, the strip may as well not be there where we live. Â We're in a nice, quiet, leafy suburban subdivision, with a supermarket and coffee shop a minute's walk away.
2 minutes on the highway and you can see the strip, and I see it looming into view on the drive home from work, but in 6 months I've had precisely one night out there. Â It doesn't dominate life in Vegas at all for us "locals," although it is nice to have a local casino you can pop to and gamble a bit. -
Sounds quite enjoyable to be fair, we were warned by the reps not to venture anywhere away from the strip for some reason, but in our heads the worst was envisioned.
Probably why it got so repetitive so quickly. -

Well, the immediate surroundings of the strip are a bit grim, but the suburbs are lovely. Â But never walk north of the Stratosphere. -
I move into my new place tomorrow.
New purchase went smoothly in the end. Has been a long time overall, but that's because of how long the first one dragged on for before falling through anyway.

We've had an acceptable offer on our house (again), so we're back on the hunt. We've booked a viewing for this beauty on Saturday. Fingers crossed.

Breaking news: the girl who put the offer in can only get mortgage for five grand less than she thought. We're still going ahead with our viewings and we've got someone else coming to view our house on Saturday now too. Headfuck. -
Not quite London, Milton Keynes, it's about two steps down price wise but still mad compared to tup north.

Shocking.  I have a two bedroom maisonette which I'm I'm currently renting out.  Pretty sure if I sold it, even now, it would go for £225,000.Get schwifty. -

Thing with London though is that it is so expensive cos so many people want to live here, simple supply and demand.
Our place cost over £600k (3 bed semi, but Victorian and sodding beautiful) which would go a lot further elsewhere, sure, but we don't want to be anywhere else as London is ace. A few years back we moved further out, but it was a bit crap, so after saving up a bit we came back in.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not slagging off the rest of the country (and have fond memories of living in Brum and Derby), but the prices in London are totally understandable in the grand scheme of things. -

That is the thing with Milton Keynes, it is commuter belt but pretty much sucks in comparison to living in London, or any other major city for that matter.
O.K it is cheaper than London and also, in turn cheaper than say Watford or Hemel, but I long to live in a big city. Unfortunately as things go I was brought up here (lovely place for a family btw) and despite trying for a job literally everywhere (including a trial in Rotterdam) I ended up with a job at a company next door to a hill I used to sledge down as a kid, not 3 minutes away from where I grew up. -

If my commute was just 5 mins, I'd happily live in London commuter territory, it was just crap spending 2 hours commuting every day into the centre, but not being able to enjoy the facilities as much due to concerns about late trains etc. -
Totally know what you mean. Milton keynes is 45 minutes to Euston but it's the bollox parking at the station blah blah blah.

Got a new job and it's quite a step up so looking to buy just outside of London in Kent. Quite pricey in places like Sevenoaks as it's only 30 minutes on the train to the new job, at least it's no where near as pricey as where I currently rent in Godalming/Guildford.
Not looking forward to the actual moving though, hate it, thankfully my missus is great at getting things sorted.
Congrats Fenton on finally getting a place.
For a long time we considered buying a small flat in town just as an investment while we rent our current place.Today is the shadow of tomorrow.
