No thread for this? I suppose 2 years and no info will do that to ya!

    21/01/2022 release date.

Available on old gen platforms, which makes sense given how long its been in production (compared to most From titles).

Anyway, the trailer is hype as you'd expect.

I'll spruce up the OP tomorrow with extra info etc when i'm feeling creative.

  • SOLD oh wait horse not, uh...  Carry on.
  • Meeeeeeoooooooooowwwww.
  • Meeeeeeeeoooooowww.
  • I'm intrigued.
Sekiro didn't do it for me so hoping this leans closer to Souls, which at least looks to be the case at this early point.

Looks like 70% Souls 20% Sekiro 10% Armoured Horse
  • Will it have an easy mode? I'm sure I read somewhere that is going to have an easy mode.
It wasn't until I hit my thirties that I realised you could unlock rewards by exploring the map

Early prediction: in open worlding it they're going to dilute the tightly designed areas and memorable, meaningful encounters into the run of the mill, easy and pointless padding seen in other open world games. I hope not but I can't see how they fill in the space otherwise

The horse armour is paid DLC.
  • So Dark Souls 4 then. I'm in. The open world thing is intriguing.

    The One Ring.
It's a world of truck drivers.
  • I'll keep playing these shits 'til they stop making them. They're not my favourites but they're always good enough.

  • Curtis deserved the op for this. I hope Elden Ring does what dark souls did for my gaming malaise when that was released. Can't wait.

I'm a little concerned, because i'm not sure what the open world aspect will add to the usual Souls-like recipe.

Galloping around on your mount in search of what? Roadblock #1. Don't go there yet! Head that way...oh dear more trouble! I'm concerned the "free roam" part is basically an expanded middle/centre wasteland from which you branch out on various paths, just like DS2.

Is Miyazaki smart enough to make a DS1 style map, writ large!?

The reality is, its only 6-7 months away, which is very soon. Those whining about cross gen graphics need to shut the fuck up. Design wins over raytracing nonsense every day of the week!
  • If they can roadblock with clever ds1 style shortcuts and/or have bits open but you get slaughtered going to a later bit by ridic enemies then could be fine.

Or maybe a little mgs5 curation.

    Fingers crossed.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • This is the info dump that came with the trailer:

The long-awaited gameplay reveal of ELDEN RING, the grand fantasy Action-RPG title developed by FromSoftware Inc. and produced by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc. can now be viewed!

ELDEN RING will launch on January 21, 2022 for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via STEAM. The game supports the Smart Delivery on Xbox consoles as well as a Free Upgrade to PS5 for players who purchase the PS4 version.

Dive into a thrilling adventure and decide the fate of a vast world filled with intrigue and power. Fight against formidable enemies with FromSoftware’s signature melee combat and discover a wide range of inventive strategies made possible by the open-ended Action-RPG gameplay of ELDEN RING

A new world filled with fantastic tales and lore has been woven by Hidetaka Miyazaki – creator of the influential and critically acclaimed DARK SOULS video game series; and George R.R. Martin – author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Players will embark on a journey across a meticulously handcrafted world dripping in blood and deception brought upon by a variety of characters with their own unique motivations for helping or hindering the player’s progress, adversaries with profound backgrounds, and fearsome creatures. Throughout their adventures, players will choose the fate of this cursed land by unravelling its secrets and myths.

Featuring a vast and seamless landscape with natural weather and time-of-day progression, players will become fully immersed in the world of ELDEN RING as they begin their journey and choose on their own path. Traverse on foot or horseback, alone or online with friends across grassy plains, suffocating swamps and lush forests. Ascend spiraling mountains, enter breathtaking castles, and witness other sites of grandeur on a scale never seen before in a FromSoftware title. ELDEN RING’s role-playing and customization options allow players to define their own unique playstyle. Experimentation is encouraged with a wide variety of weapons, magical abilities and skills found throughout the world; enticing players to follow previously unexplored progression paths.

ELDEN RING gives players the opportunity to chart their own path through its world. Choose to run headlong into fierce battles against daunting foes or take advantage of the game’s stealth and combat systems to gain the upper hand. It is up to the player to decide how to handle the many challenges that lay before them.

“With ELDEN RING, we have applied all our dark fantasy and action-RPG expertise cultivated throughout the Dark Souls series, in order to create a bold, classical evolution of the genre,” commented Hidetaka Miyazaki, Director at FromSoftware, “We've crafted a rich world with a staggering sense of scale, based off of legends written for the game by George R. R. Martin. ELDEN RING is a world full of mystery and peril, ready to be explored and discovered; a drama in which various characters flaunt their own mystique and ulterior motives. We sincerely hope you enjoy experiencing it for yourself.”

“I am very happy and excited to announce the release date of ELDEN RING, a new game created by Mr. Miyazaki and Mr. George R.R. Martin, two creators that I truly admire and have a passionate fan base around the world. I am very happy and excited to be able to tell you about it.”  Added Yasuo Miyakawa, President & CEO, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc. “We will continue to develop ELDEN RING not only as a game but also in a variety of other areas in order to deliver the worldview and charm of this title to our fans around the world. We look forward to your continued support.”

Stay tuned for more ELDEN RING news throughout the year.
  • I'm just gonna say that From's BotW is going to spank Nintendo's pretty easily.
  • Having different ways of handling challenges makes me hopeful.
  • A mix of Souls and Sekiro huh. Sign me the fuck up!
  • Know they talked a lot about the RPG side being important before - hopefully they’ve gone back and upgraded magic and bow combat in the same way they’ve improved melee. That’s my big hope. Anything else - not worried about - FROM do good game.

I’d maybe consider how maybe From could be ADDING to the open world model rather than the open world model taking away from the Souls games. I mean we’ve been playing to the fiddle of Ubi for so long it took Nintendo to shake things up and maybe some craftsmanship from a company that takes care with their games will imbue something new and exciting into open world games. I’m happy to stay optimistic until I see evidence otherwise.
  • This is what I'm hoping for -

    Potential open world souls like.
Free roam to take on any boss you want to
    Multiplayer areas
    Proper fashion souls
    Saveable anywhere
    Decent parry mechanic
    Learnable and fair boss battles.
Potential to one bro the whole game.
I actually just want Souls of the wild.
    Viable magic and bow builds

    What I don't want.
Bastard hard stuff for the sake of it.
    Multiple boss health bars.
    Sekiro part two.

Sometimes here. Sometimes Lurk. Occasionally writes a bad opinion then deletes it before posting..
  • This looks absolutely Classic Tiger and I cannot wait.
  • I would love it if they ditched drawn out multi-phase bosses. Or gave you another way to deal with them. Perhaps weaken them using other skills or items you might find by exploring other places.

A bit like they did with stealth in Sekiro, but better and more committed.
  • I suppose this is the opportunity to have it both ways. Either let you learn complex attack patterns and multiple phases to take bosses down in combat (the Sekiro, DS3 approach). Or make it possible to find ingenious tricks and tactics that can be just as effective (a bit more like Demon's and DS1). Plus of course summoning, for that thuggish mob approach.
