Fundraising for the Heroes at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre:
‹ Previous12
  • Hello All,

A couple on here already know but this past year has been a very difficult one for my wife, myself and our family.

In April during a routine blood test my wife found out she had Leukaemia. Completely out of the blue, no symptoms nor concerns, just a routine blood test that changed our lives. There’s no cancer specialist ward here on the Isle of Man that can deal with Leukaemia, so she had to come home that day, pack a small bag, go back to hospital and be flown to Liverpool the next morning to The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool , where aside from a stint over in the ICU at The Liverpool Royal, she’s been almost ever since. I’ve not been able to see her very much because of Covid restrictions aside from I was able to be by her side everyday when she was in the ICU (or related departments) for a month. She had complications as she picked up a chest infection during the first round of chemo. In the ICU she suffered multiple organ failure, died for 7 minutes whilst I held her hand and they tried and eventually brought her back. And then the strangest day in my life happened a couple of weeks later after she’d spent that entire time in a coma where one doctor told me she’d beaten the cancer and was in remission whilst another then told me she had severe brain swelling, bleeds on the brain, may never wake up, and if she did would certainly not be the woman she was. Then the next day…she woke up…and within weeks was back at Clatterbridge continuing to burn away every chance of the cancer still hiding in her.

She’s somehow, miraculously made a complete recovery from everything she suffered due to the infection, and is about to start her last round of chemo and has been without any sign of it since the first round in April put her in remission. The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and The Royal have been nothing short of incredible and they have not only cared for my wife, but been her friends, her family, and absolutely everything she’s needed for the past 7 months. There’s no way I could ever repay them for what they’ve done in such difficult and heartbreaking conditions. They’re all heroes, beyond heroes. I couldn’t sum up what they are if I wrote another million words. The NHS truly is a beautiful thing that we’re beyond lucky to have.

Now all of this is coming to an end and she’ll hopefully be home in November, my wonderful sister in law is raising some money for Clatterbridge and the work they do. We could never raise enough to begin to thank them, but anything raised helps potentially save someone’s life, make somebody’s life in there more comfortable, or help to employ another amazing worker to carry out the unbelievable work they all do right from the porters and cleaners that are in so many ways as incredible as the amazing nurses, doctors and consultants. There’s a few things that we’ll be doing to raise money but she took the initial step and we want everything to go through her as she’s been as invaluable as anyone during this time.

So the link is here if anyone would like to give, and I’ll put my wife’s Leukaemia Journey Instagram link here too as she wanted to show people her journey, the good and the bad. That alone has done so much for her and others, just sharing her journey she’s gained and provided support through it.

My wife is the most incredible woman and though I knew it before, even I didn’t understand just how incredible.

Just a little could make a big difference in a world where just one of the drugs she needed to save her cost £40,000 a day and needed special permission to me administered. I want to try to make sure others have the some opportunity to fight as she did.

    Thanks for reading.

Fockin A.  I knew you had shit going on, but didn't realise the full extent of it.  I shall happily donate, as that's quite the story.
  • All I can say is thank fuck for places like that and the people who run them.

You’ve had a hell of a time, fingers crossed for your wife continuing to recover well.
  • Honestly I just had no idea until I’d seen it around me everyday. It’s just beyond human. What they deal with, how far they go every day, all they have to go through meaning the good and the bad. It’s simply immeasurable.
  • Christ

I'll make a donation next pay day

    Hope everything stays on track!
He could've just said they came from another planet but seems keen to convince people with his bullshit pseudoscience that he knows stuff. I wouldn't trust him with my lunch. - SG

Hugs happily received. It might sound completely crazy because of the time, the distance, the complications, but we feel very lucky after all we’ve seen and been a part of. It’s luck in terms of finding out so early and hard work in terms of her body fighting to live, but we also know so many others aren’t so lucky which is why we want to do our bit.

Wow V that’s quite the journey your wife and you have been on. Happy to contribute.
    Things can only get better.
  • Wow mate, words fail me right now.
I'm so so pleased that she's coming through the other side. I'll happily chuck some money to such a brilliant cause. The people who work so hard to give so much are incredible.

Send your wonderful wife all of our love (and have some yourself, big guy)

Not everything is The Best or Shit. Theres many levels between that, lets just enjoy stuff.
  • Aye, it’s a terrifying journey you’ve both been on mate, but hopefully your both coming out the other side now, and it’ll all be in the past soon. We’re so blessed to have the Good Ship NHS, and all who sail in her.
Will gladly make a donation tomorrow.
Come with g if you want to live...
  • Flippin heck mate. That's a crazy story, I'm glad to hear it has worked out. The husband of a woman I work with just got diagnosed with leukaemia last week, I don't think I'd fully appreciated what that journey could be until I read your post.
I'll definitely donate. Healthcare workers are the most amazing people.

  • Honestly I keep saying it but thank you everyone, it really does mean everything to us that these places get the funding they need as without them we wouldn’t be where we are.

Cancer is one of those things that you know is all around you, but until it happens to a loved one you’ve no idea how close it is and how many people you know have been affected by it. It’s terrifying but there’s so much hope nowadays and you can fight it, especially if you’re lucky like we were in randomly finding it or if you notice absolutely anything you go your GP.
  • A little donation sent for a worthy cause.  This has all really touched me.

I've lost two people recently to cancer. It can fuck off.
  • Jesus, that's quite the story.  Donation sent.  So glad to hear it's a positive outcome but that must have been a fucking awful experience for you, Vere.

Hadn't mentioned it before but my Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the beginning of the year, so I have a little bit (and only a very little bit) of an idea of what you've been through.
  • Very sorry to hear that Unlikely.

I'm so glad that story has a happy ending, and that you'll be getting your family back together. I don't know how any pharmaceutical company can justify charging 40 grand for one day's worth of a drug, though..

Really sorry to hear that Unlikely, just completely turns your world upside down.

Really hope he’s doing well mate, I’ve absolutely no idea when it comes to prostrate cancer but might have an idea as to what you’re all going through so if ever you wanna just release about it all let me know.

Disgusting isn’t it? And they made me aware at any time that could just stop because of the cost and that she was only getting it because they decided they’d go all in with her and others aren’t that lucky. It was all heartbreaking to hear on a selfish level but also imagining the bigger picture and the families of those not so lucky.

Heartbroken to hear that Reg, our Neighbour passed away in August after being diagnosed with cancer only a month earlier, it’s gone from being something I never consciously worried about to suddenly being inescapable.

  • Thanks G, thanks to everyone that’s donated or just popped in. It’s all about making any kind of difference and just raising awareness is as important as anything else.
  • I have no words but should be a small donation sent.
Much love sent your way pal.
  • What an incredible lady you're with Vere. Thanks for sharing and inspiring, donation sent x
