Everyone loves country....or do they? I've been meaning to make a specific thread for a while, and there's been a bit of banjo love recently, so here it is. Discuss the genre/various sub-genres/favourite artists/songs, or just post videos of decent stuff for me to watch, ta.

I like Alt country , with some of my fav bands being Uncle Tupelo , Wilco , Lucinda Williams and particularly Ryan Adams but he tends to release too much .

I preferred Son Volt from the Uncle Tupelo split. I've never really got the whole Wilco thing (I know a couple of people who are crazy about them), although I do like a good number of their songs. I dip in and out of Ryan Adams' albums (I only own three), but he's definitely an artist I admire. I'll watch anything that gets posted.

I like to pretend Middle Cyclone didn't happen. It's better to work backwards from Fox Confessor and get Blacklisted and Furnace Room Lullaby (The Virginian is a little too country for me, though).

I bought two of her albums last year (both under £2 on Amazon), and from what I've read she gets a fair bit of stick for having a a slightly thin and not conventionally barnstorming/honeyed voice, but there was some good stuff on both. I was going to put 'The Whiskey Makes You Sweeter' in the OP, but I realised eight vids was already overdoing it.

My favourite up and coming young country artist, I saw her play The Windmill in Brixton a couple of times last year, and absolutely love her second album:
I've seen her vocals likened to 'a young Neko Case' a couple of times. -
Yes krs, while it is all shades of wonderful to hear Peel again, I really can't stomach country.

Mogwai's Government Commissions album of BBC sessions came out after he died and opens with Peel introducing them. Brings a little lump to my throat, that does.

I usually think Country, Blues and Reggae are massively bland genres with rules so set in stone that practitioners can rattle out songs with no regard for anything other than convention. I quite enjoyed this performance on Jools Holland though

Pretty much any genre has "set in stone" rules. Otherwise it wouldn't be a genre.

True, but it feels to me that other genres have more breathing space than the stifling rulesets which govern the ones I mentioned. Obviously personal taste etc

A lot of country music is stereotyped by twangy guitars and yodelling vocals but it certainly doesn't all have to be like that. Probably half of the all time classic songs you can think of are country songs.
