  • Could smartglass make porn more educational, by allowing you to tap on parts of the anatomy and bring up details on it.

    STOP ALL PROGRESS.

No, it looks good.  It's like a WiiU without having to buy one!
  • Didn't take MS or Sony long to incorporate pretty much everything the Wii-U will be able to do into existing tech, surely ninty need to come in at a really low price point to convince anyone it's worth bothering with.
  • SURELY NINTY NEED TO STOP WASTING OUR FUCKING TIME WITH THEIR DISAPPOINTOSHITE.

All my dreams for the Wii crushed long before launch or purchase by the revealing of it's piddly hardware specs. Same goes for the WiiU. If the thing actually shipped with the grunt to do something useful with motion control and the tablet controller I'd be all for it. But it's not. Fucking Ninty.

I want the Ninty of yore that gave a shit about the hardware back.

    You've got a 3DS, right? :)

It's not. The Wii U is not necessarily any good but the touch stuff is not a optional add-on, its built into the console.
So smartglass will either not involve games, or be superfluous extras within a game, just like Kinect.

I know you like all the extra stuff and use Kinect as a remote and all that. But unless it's going to improve the xbox as a gaming device, its not something that interests me. And it can't really be compared to the WiiU.

    Please don't ban me.

I use my 360 for as much media, well, Netflix, as gaming now. Anything that might enhance or smooth that experience for free is fine by me.
  • My worry with the WiiU, though, is that it'll initially receive a bit of shovelware without specific WiiU capabilities.  In which case the control pad functionality will be tacked on extras.  If it's specific to the game, then Smartglass and Crossplay allow MS and Sony to offer the same, albeit optional, functionality on their consoles.

The thing is, the Wii U will have Nintendo games on it.

Infinitely more fun than Vita cross play or smart glass.

Don't worry chum, you'll grow out of them eventually.  ;)

I'm sure a lot of Nintendo first party games will be more fun than SmartGlass, but I still see more uses for SmartGlass.

It's not just crossplay, Sony have already demoed LBP using the Vita as a WiiU style controller to perform actions you couldn't do with a controller, and use the Vita screen for tasks / views not available on the TV screen. Basically it already does pretty much everything the WiiU tablet will.

How much implementation it'll get in other games is debatable, but it's already an option. If anything it may benefit Nintendo, if it means a dev could add the same feature to 2 console versions of a game it might make it slightly more worth their while.

The problem with Vita as a controller (and SmartGlass) is that it'll only ever be an optional method for a smaller (much smaller in Vita's case, ahem) sub-section of the audience. Ergo it'll always be a bit half-arsed.

I guess what Sony could do is include a Vita (or Vita Lite) with the PS4, but that's a big ask cost wise. Plus existing users wouldn't be too chuffed at the thought of being forced to buy another one.

Yup, I can see that being the thing with every single third party game.  Add something compatible with CrossPlay for the Vita/PS3 owners, that also works on SmartGlass for the 360/iPad/iPhone owners, and then push the same functionality onto the WiiU.

Net result; nothing particular exciting is done with the WiiU's game pad, because the publishers don't want to make 2 versions of the game, and they don't want to make the functionality essential in case PS3 owners don't have a Vita for CrossPlay and 360 owners don't have a tablet/smartphone.

I'm sure there'll be some excellent games that come out for it with some truly smart uses of the pad, but I suspect the vast majority of your games will end up like this.
  • While Nintendo are making their own crazy hardware with its own feature set, they'll always have this 3rd party problem.
The PS3 and Xbox have essentially the same amount of buttons in the same places and broadly similar hardware capabilities. I doubt either of them would do anything truly unique and split the cross-platform devs.
  • I'm sure it'll all be half-arsed, but the Vita at least serves the same function as the WiiU tablet.

Will smartglass allow you to control the game with any compatible device, use the touchscreen functions in-game / provide an alternateview while playing the game etc or will it just show related web content?
  • True, both Sony and MS are probably secretly happy the other's come up with CrossPlay/SmartGlass at the same time, as they allow a broadly similar feature set across both consoles.

One of the E3 examples was Madden played in a "coach" mode, where the iPad was used to flick through a playbook, make substitutions, set up your formation, and then start the play going.
  • That would probably be the perfect way to control an American football game.

If you assume that the WiiPad is the unholy coupling of a 360/PS3 controller and a tablet, because it is, then there's no particular reason why SmartGlass (if you have it) couldn't perform the same functions....except...you wouldn't be holding the tablet it'd be in your lap.

The Vita is obviously the closest to a WiiPad, but it's also the biggest ask.

If anything, there's a real danger 3rd Party WiiU games will be designed to be used with all three methods, which strictly speaking would mean a slightly more ham-strung version for the WiiU and Vita (less demanding time sensitive interactions on the screen) so that it can support SmartGlass (the lag is the one thing I think could make SmartGlass suffer).

I think Elm already made that point.

Have they confirmed how it's going to work yet?  Right now I have no idea if the Xbox Companion app on my phone is controlling it by virtue of being on the same network, or if it's somehow sending signals via the internet through my XBL account?
