Can I ask how it managed to get to £3.51 at the end rather than a round figure?

Yeah, some of it was fees and some was conversion from Euro donations.

I'm going to post a card tomorrow.

I'll put all the names from the OP in there as they couldn't fit.

  • Could I make a request for next year? Seems from the OP that the hospitals that have received our generosity have all been oop North. Would it be possible to have one darn sarf next year? I was thinking of the Royal Marsden in South London. It's a hospital specialising in cancer treatment and they have a specific respite room for kids who are long time patients or who are terminally ill. I've been in there a few times as a benefactor but also when a really dear family close to me had to endure their 3 year old suffering from cancer. If we organised a week earlier, I could organise for us to take the gifts there along with some other London badgers.

Don't want to disrupt this year's achievements and chat, but thought I'd pledge whilst thread traffic is high. I'll pop a few pictures up later if of interest.
  • Didn't we already do Royal Marsden back when we were at the Edge forums?

    sounds familiar

  • Ooh, didn't know that. May have been before my time. If we have, why don't we do a Scottish hospital and you can play the Santa role?
  • Heh.
We did several London-centric hospitals back in the day iirc. That's why the more recent drives have tended to be in the north.
Bothers me not a jot though tbh. I'm happy to give my money to any children's hospital.

The main thing is that someone steps up and volunteers to organise it all. I don't think it really matters which hospital we pick or whether it's one that might have been done before.

  • Can I suggest we kick it off in October next year?
Sometimes here. Sometimes Lurk. Occasionally writes a bad opinion then deletes it before posting..
  • It's probably worth saying that where we donate to has been largely dependant upon which hospitals have signed up via Child's Play.  I think I'm right in saying it's only been "northern" hospitals as an option this year.

I suppose next year (especially if we started early) there's no reason why we couldn't ask non Child's Play hospitals if they want anything instead, but that would obviously involve even more work than the sterling effort put in by Cosby this year (and others previously).
  • Can I nominate Birmingham? It's in the middle and they keep sowing my kids back together.

Let's give to a few next year? BTW, in the OP Alder Hey was the first, it never got a second from us.

  • Manchester, Sheffield and Alder Hey have been the options the last few years. If you have a hospital you'd like to use in future, tell them about Child's Play and say you'd like to donate to them via it.
  • Not to be pedantic, but they really don't need to have anything to do with Child's Play. If there's a hospital you want to donate to, contact their play department and ask them what they need. There's nothing special about Amazon wish lists that you can't do yourself.

Are they not VAT free via childs play? I always thought there was an underling point besides lining amazons pockets of taxless profits.

No, but if they are on there, other people will donate to them as well.

    And sign internet petitions.

One NGO has asked me to flash mob my local MP over a gagging order petition. I might be their only hope. I've some spare cash and I know a few tramps who will pretend to be me.

  • I looked into volunteering at a women's shelter but the psychological baggage those women carry is more than I'm able to deal with. I find myself getting frustrated and angry and that helps no one. In fact it does the opposite. I just donate, but I always feel bad and inadequate for not being able to offer more practical help.

Just a quick follow up as I had an email from RMCH today

Please find attached a thank you letter for you and your friends. Thank you so much for your email and of course your kind gifts! I have passed on the information of how to apply for the free games to the Play Team who look after all the toys for the children in the hospital. The amazing gifts that we received are very much appreciated and were well used by the poorly children who were unfortunately staying in hospital during the Christmas period.

Thank you once again for your support.

    Kind regards
    Donna

  • Well done all, and big love to Cosby for organising this year's fundraiser.
