The pubs I go into, gastro would relate more to what you find pooling in the urinals than anything else

  • I’ve never understood why English black pudding is so shit. Anytime I’m south of the border and I order breakfast, it comes with a portion of blood-pudding-based disappointment.

This porterhouse steak isn't too shabby either:

From a pub inevitability called the Porterhouse in Oranmore if you're wondering g.man. Their battered prawns and JD wings are tremendous too, Ireland gets a big thumbs up from me.
  • I didn’t know Oranmore was a place. There’s a pub called Oran Mor at the bottom of my street.
  • Looks like damn fine grub there Sparkles.

He's not wrong, pudding of kings.

I find 99% of black pudding with breakfasts is shite. Burnt to a crisp discs of horror.
  • In fairness, they're discs of horror any way they're cooked.

That would easily do 4 people. Good for a morning after hangover cure.

Only 1 piece of black pudding each? Get the duck outta here.

But yeah, the quantities are way off - I'm with Jon.

Two guys, two girls. Girls don't eat black pudding and only want (get) one sausage.

    C'mon mate!

Made some onion bhajis from scratch tonight. Not bad for a first attempt - just needed a bit more spice/seasoning.

Pretty easy really - egg, flour and sliced onion with a choice of spice/seasoning. Mix it all up and fry in the pan creating the shape of your choice ( I went for cumin and coriander). You need to eat them more or less straight away though.

  • Pop Works Sticky Toffee Pudding flavour popcorn.

Good lord, I was expecting over priced butterkist toffee. What I got wasnt sticky, it was a slightly powdery coating with a full Tyson punch of flavour.
It is toffee, smoky, salty, sweet goodness and certainly not for the faint hearted

Highly recommend for a movie night in, serve with prosecco, dry cider or bitter lemonade.
  • Per person it should be: 2 slices of toast 2 hash browns Portion of beans 2 rashers of bacon 2 or 3 sausages 2 eggs 4 pieces of black pudding Cup of orange tea with oily film on top.

So close, and yet so far.

1 or 2 slices of toast (white bread)
1 or 2 hash browns (size dependent)
    Portion of beans
3 or 4 rashers of bacon
    2 sausages
    1 egg
    1 tattie scone
    1 piece of black pudding
½ fried tomato, sprinkled with black pepper
Apple juice (if served before noon)
    Irn-Bru (if served after 11am)
Mug of He-Man tea with two sugars
Mug of thick black coffee with two sugars
    Remaining toast with raspberry jam

2 bacon - proper butcher thick sliced - none of your vacuum packed water injected nonsense.
2 sausage (ideally 1xpork + 1xbeef). Again butcher bought is best though there are decent packaged ones available.
1 or 2 butcher's vegetable roll (sausage meat in mini burger shape with onion & herbs)
1 black pudding, 1 white pudding (have seen one large slice with the black on the outer ring and white in the centre as an option)
    1 egg scrambled or fried
½ soda farl fried crisp in small amount of bacon fat - cut into strips or 2 triangles.
1 potato farl fried crisp in bacon fat - cut into 2 triangles.
1 small pancake fried crisp in bacon fat (aka dropped scone) - cut in 2 semi-circles.
    ½ fried tomato
a small amount of button mushrooms
toast on the side with butter. Toast in triangles.
    tea
soft drink/juice depending on grade of hangover.

    No beans.

The skill is frying those breads such that they are not greasy on the palate. It's a skill I possess. Also the soda and potato farl if possible should be sourced in a home bakery. Packaged stuff - especially re soda farls - is sub-optimal.

Chase with a statin or your choice, 1 a day for a week.

So, if you eat between 11 and 12 then you have apple juice and iron bru?

If you’re feeling decadent, sure. Either is acceptable at those times, though.

I don't think I could do a fry up anymore. The scale and quantity of it put me off, and now I've discovered shakshuka and other delights I'd rather something else.

    Irn Bru is good stuff.

I still fall back on Lucozade as a hangover drink though. Back when Lucozade Sport was sparkling it briefly usurped it.

I also found Mountain Dew to be an agreeable hangover drink when it was available.

  • The Northern Irish do the best fry. I think it's the potato and soda bread that makes it.
