Peter Firmin, co-creator of Bagpuss, The Clangers and other kids TV, mainly alongside Oliver Postgate. (“Emily” in Bagpuss was his daughter.)
I grew up on a lot of his shows, though whilst I loved the Clangers I had a weird dislike of Bagpuss. (I was once asked by a group of children to make up a “scary story”, and told them the tale of an old possessed toy cat, which largely summed up my fear of that weird pink beast.). Regardless, I suspect there’s a whole generation who benifitted from his work, all of it supremely well crafted, and with a consistent streak of kindness running through them all.
Dang, rip Mr Firm in, I used to love how infuriated the Professor Birdguy got at the organ mice on Bagpuss whenever he wanted them to do something and they were like "nah fuck off blud this is organ mice manor, you're bout to get blupped unless you chip"
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
Noggin the Nog and Pogles Wood are probably my earliest TV memories. I had the pleasure of meeting Peter Firmin a couple of times a few years ago. He used to have an annual exhibition and sale of his lino and wood block prints at an arts centre in Whitstable. He was always happy to talk about Bagpuss, Clangers and his other Small Films creations as well as his later art work which was mainly country life and wild life based. We have a few of his prints hanging in our house including a scene of a steam tractor driven threshing machine. I can remember him telling us that the boy at the back of the machine collecting the chaff was actually himself and that was his job as a boy in the Kent countryside. He recalled that he had that job as he was the youngest and smallest and the dust and chaff got everywhere and was horribly itchy.
Apparently he died at his home in Kent which I believe was still the farm where all of the Small Films were created together with Oliver Postgate.
Very sad news indeed but what a brilliantly creative life he had.

Lovely story Mal0wner, that's a gorgeous print to boot. I used to love Bagpuss as a young boy, there was something very memorable about the character design and stopmotion filming makes me feel quite nostalgic. Rest in Peace Mr Firming x
I think that goes for a lot of older TV/film work. Modern pacing is crazy fast. Remember that bit from Taken where there are 30-ish cuts just for Liam Neeson to jump over a fence?
