Reasons to be cheerful
  • Innit, he's in a nissan something (I'm not a car guy) and loves 'beating' fancy cars.
  • Low self esteem is a curse, eh?
  • Our 'Concert' at work was such a success that we're doing it every fortnight during the current shite, I'm super happy and it's really given me the (guitar) bug again, been playing constantly ever since, blisters on my fingers and everything. Working out a setlist for next time, forgot how much I enjoyed playing, and back to making gains. Happy days.
  • Also looking at Stetsons on ebay and have taken to wearing my cowboy boots round the house, and now growing a moustache out. Haters gonna hate.
  • Pics when it arrives btw.

No overtime for me tomorrow. Been changing my mind all week but fuck it, it's too far to travel at the moment, even for double time, so I'm reclaiming my weekends for the rest of the pandemic. Optional innit, non essential day. Feels like 2008 again. Drops my colleagues in it a little bit but three of them are going in anyway, just means they'll have a slightly longer day (and extra bunce on payday).

    Lockdown, 3-2-1...

retroking1981: Fuck this place I'm off to the pub.
  • I’m copy/pasting this from a bloke called Canocola on Twitter, because it amused me. It might amuse you too.
It often seems that the golden age of naval idiocy has disappeared forever.

I'm therefore pleased to note that the Venezuelan patrol vessel Naiguatá has managed to recapture some of this spirit by fighting the dumbest action of the 21st century.

The trouble began when RCGS Resolute, a smallish cruise liner specialising in penguin-bothering, stopped to repair her engines in international waters.

Outraged by this brazen act of maintenance, Naiguatá's captain seems to have decided to order Resolute to a Venezuelan port.

This in itself is a bit weird, given the times we're in. Countries across the globe are trying to persuade cruise ships to dock elsewhere lest their plague-ridden hordes cause a major public health crisis.

Quite how the Naiguatá's captain thought his superiors would react to him merrily sailing into Puerto Moreno with his potentially infectious captive in tow remains a mystery.

Resolute seems to have also thought this was a superbly dumb idea, so radioed head office for instructions.

Naiguatá's captain appears to have taken this delay badly.

At this point it's worth reviewing both ships armaments. Naiguatá had a 76mm main gun, a air/missile defence gun, two smaller machine guns and presumably also some small arms.

Resolute, on the other hand, is armed with nothing more deadly than a well-stocked library, Finnish sauna, and "a superb international wine list".

Some of its passengers are believed to have had binoculars.

It's fair to say that Naiguatá's captain is not to a patient man. With Resolute still sitting there doing nothing he escalated straight past asking nicely and apparently opened fire.

I'm presuming this wasn't with the 76mm main gun, but at this point who knows?

Actual gunfire failing to achieve anything in the way of changing Resolute's heading, Naiguatá then decided to commence ramming it in an attempt to forceably change its direction.

    This was... unwise.

RCGS Resolute is designed to bounce off icebergs. You know, the sort of thing that opened Titanic up like a can opener.

Naiguatá, on the other hand, was strictly designed to handle water in its liquid phase.

Needless to say the ramming attempts ended up with twenty extremely pissed off Venezuelan sailors being fished out of the water after their patrol vessel sank underneath them.

After an hour hanging around on standby in case it was required to help with the rescue effort, Resolute was left to buff out its battle damage.

So if next time you go on a cruise there's a silhouette of a patrol vessel marking a successful 'kill' on the bow, now you know why...

  • So my wonderfully talented gf has a wee side hustle doing illustrations for people. Greeting cards based off photos of pets/loved ones etc, that kind of thing. Some commission stuff too. Original prints too.

I thought she was gonna struggle being let go from her FT job and being under lockdown, but to her immense credit she's thrown herself into her illustrating and been getting orders left right and centre. Amongst all this work are these two original prints, copies of which being sold with all proceeds going yo nhs charities and AgeUK respectively.

I think they're great so I tweeted about them. Popular Scottish sport page oldfirmfacts retweeted, which then brought them to the attention of a journalist from the Evening Times who yesterday interviewed her for a piece getting published Monday page 9! Go her!

Anyway, I'm super chuffed for her. Seeing her continue to create is inspiring me to keep going.

  • Top work! And well in to you Gav, for getting the word out. The right people saw it, and now she’s flying.
  • Yeah, I'm hoping she gets a boost from it and maybe someone will employ her, or even commission her so she can really get it off the ground (tbf she'd get great use out of an ipad Pro/surface pro and a new printer that doesn't fuck her about). She had to hastily register as a company yesterday in case this exposure alerts the wrong folk. She effectively had been making money but it was peanuts.
  • Well in Gav, that's some excellent PR work.

With the sun shining we're both a bit annoyed at not having a garden to sit in today, especially having walked through the west end and seen all the better-offs luxuriating in theirs. So we went and stocked up on some spirits to enjoy cocktails with the windows open and some good tunes on. Every little helps.

Excellent. Nice style to that work....that hand washing one reminds me a bit of the Revolver album cover.

I'm always in awe of people who can put a few lines on a page and have something like that jump out.
