Anyone know if the official Sony licensed fight stick is worth two beans? Seems to be cheapest I've seen at £70

    What stick is that?
  • Also, I've got an xbox360 madcatz SF4 TE2:
    RbWDQ.jpg

    - any chance I can mod it to work on PS4? (I'm not averse to a bit of soldering, as long as the instructions are clear).
I was thinking of the Chronusmax or something but it seems convoluted and doesn't give good results (for some setups you need to be running it through a PC to the console or something?!)
  • you'll need a pcb from a ps4 compatible pad at the moment. the hori fighting commander is the popular choice.

hacking a ds4 looks like a massive nightmare...
  • DS4 pcb is a nightmare to work with, its in 3 seperste bits and you have to mong about soldering resistors or diodes or something onto the board to stop the should button inputs being read as analogue inputs.

Hori fighting commander is the way to go, although that said, easiest thing to do is just buy a PS4 stick if you can afford it, its going to be another long generation. If a decent third party mod like PS360+ appears in the future you can always upgrade the old stick so you have two to use for locals.

  • I wonder how well the cross play will work? Getting a new PC and using my 360 stick rather than buying a new console and stick would be wise.

  • Im not sure if I can get back into SF but will see how this pans out. A new stick would be nice...
  • Ah ok, cheers - from the brief google i did it did seem like it was all a bit up in the air at the moment and quite a faff to convert. I'll keep my eyes out for a cheapish PS4 stick.

    @Tiger

You'll miss out on the first stage beta, but I'm pretty sure cross play will work well. There's no real technical reason for it not to.

I'm keen on using a pad this time round though.

But the dream of headlining a Topanga league table with a Hori EX2 still appeals.

Hmm, it's not too bad, and you don't need a PC, but you have to set up a macro (any button combo) to manually resync in-between matches, otherwise it automatically resyncs every ten minutes with a pause.

Its triggers are easy to invert, but the DS4 and DS3 are both bastards for mods. The DS3's something like ground for the four face buttons, the right shoulders, and mayber the sticks, another ground for the d-pad and left shoulders, another for Select and Start, and I've forgotten where Home runs.

Not too bad for soldering, but a nightmare for adding a PIC to unless you only need to control one set of isolated buttons.
  • if more of those hori fightpads that were shipped with xrd get made i'd recommend picking those up. the PCB is common ground and it's a nice small square shape, the one in Rouj's hitbox is the cleanest PS4 mod i've seen.

Service-based model eh? I like the idea of being able to play to earn new DLC.
  • Gotta watch that in full later at in laws house. Not like I will have anything else to do...

  • Sounds like a promising model they've gone for (mild spoilers here if you wanted to watch later): Earn currency in game to purchase whatever new bits you like leaving those you dont, hard currency option available if you need. Depends on the economy balance ofc for whether it turns grindy but it doesn't sound like a terrible system at all. 16 chars at launch with 4 totally new.
  • Been looking at some sticks this morning, I'm prone to going for top dorra on things like this but I'm recoiling at forking out 150+. Some research on the venom stick says it's easily switched for parts and general consensus seems to be it's legit decent. For £70 it seems like a done deal tbh - am I missing owt?

Some really interesting stuff in that vid, great to see some of the development process, definitely got me more excited.

Been looking at sticks too, got my 40th birthday coming up in August so I'm hoping for some zenny to get one - think I'm gonna go for the silent Hori RAP4 Hayabusa

    Need to import it though!

Got a Venom but am total shite at fighters. Seems fine, all parts are pretty easily replaceable and has decent heft to it, cable storage etc etc. Should work on PC & PS3 too but has no touchpad support.

  • Good to hear the venom is holding out okay. For half the half the price of a 'legit' stick it seems worth it, I may splurge next week, despite not having a 4.

Tgggrr - I was holding out on NXTGN until a console shifter came along, and V made that grade. Make the jump, foo. It'll be the first generation ever that I've picked a Sony over something else, but I think this GNR it's needed.
  • I've reading / catching up on all the SFV news from E3 and Evo. They're doing a good job of making it sound great on paper. I'm really looking forward to it now and so glad I sided with Sony when I chose my next gem console.

  • There's likely to be another official stick like they did for 3, no?

Going hold out for one of them I think.

Yes there will be an official SFV stick, but Madcatz prices! >_<

They will be re-releasing their Fightpads when SFV drops, if you prefer that option. Certainly a damn sight cheaper.
  • I reckon there will be a few quality sticks undercutting the MCZ premium by the time SF5 rolls around.
  • As said in other thread, I'm glancing at the venom for £70. Seems like it does the job out the box, and converts to higher with buttons and stick.
  • Is anyone going to be playing on PC?

The Venom's not bad. Unlike the old Brawls, it has a proper-sized case. But if you remember the Crosses going for £50 on offer, it's a bit overpriced.

There's a fairly obvious difference between the cheapest Chinese sticks and the mid-tier ones, but not nearly as much of a gap between the mid-tiers and Sanwas. The really cheap ones have rough, uneven pivots, with loose springs and weak switches. Most mid-level sticks correct the first two, and some all three.

Next to a Sanwa, they usually feel a bit more tramlined, as if they favour the four cardinal directions. Seimitsus are similar in my experience. Sanwas are looser, with very even movement in any direction. The downside of this freer movement is a slower return to neutral, which I personally don't like. My problem is that I can't isolate my hand from my forearm, so I always push too hard when I need to be quick. The harder you hit the gate, the longer it takes for your muscles to return to neutral (because you don't stop transmitting force until you feel the gate, so your delay depends on your reaction time in correcting your overshoot).*

I've two sticks: one's a European stick that I've modified to be as light as possible (though still much heavier than a Sanwa), without compromising its return-to-neutral tension. With a fast spring, I can bang it into the gate and then just release it when I feel the impact. I don't have to 'reverse' it.

My other stick is a springless Sanwa, which is so light (the switches provide all feel and resistance), I can largely isolate my carpals from my lower forearm.

*This is probably the biggest hurdle when you're used to a d-pad, because d-pads isolate your thumb and only require shallow taps. Overshoot improves rapidly with practice as your muscle memory gets used to the gate, but some of us still struggle!

Of all the things to specialise in, I sure chose one of the saddest.

It all started with a Fighting Stick 2 and some better parts, but I was soon working on more and more projects. Before I knew it, I was up all night doing Cheetahs and QuickShots. It got so bad, I once modified a medical pedal. Dark days.
