MattyJ Goes to Scotland
  • Curry in Scotland is rubbish. Don't give me that backchat, it just is. Simply not enough immigration. Leicester on the other hand is superb but it's a dump. Swings and roundabouts.
  • Hunners of salt, probably pure.
  • The quality of immigrant is what's important, SG, not the quantity.

Not if the locals don't have a clue what they're talking about. They'll learn the local lingo to get accepted and it'll get fucked.

Mushtaqs in Hamilton says hiya son. Ohhhh, and Balbirs on the road to Killie. Both spectacular. Fair play if you've already been though.

I think if I went to Scotland again I probably wouldn't come back.

Yeah, the urban crime rates are ridiculous.
  • I went to Edinburgh earlier this year with Mrs Skondo. Reg recommended a place called The Dogs. Quirky place with great food.

The Dogs is great but on the other end of town for Matty. Trying to think about what's near him, specially if he only has a day.
  • Aaahh okay. Enjoyed Edinburgh, although following the wedding at St Giles' Cathedral, walking down the high Street behind the newly married couple and bloody piper was a bit weird.
  • Appreciate all the recommendations guys.

That one's on me, sorry yo. Shame it's gone as well because Matty's staying right by it.

Hello Badgers, The good lady her indoors and I are visiting Edinburgh and Glasgow in December for a couple of nights, to check out the Christmas markets and have a little break. We're flying in Sunday lunchtime to Edinburgh, then off to Glasgow Monday lunchtime(ish) via train for one night in Glasgow then flying back from there Tuesday. It's a really short time but would appreciate advice on places to see/go/eat please! Not too pricey (it's nearly Christmas!) and central-ish would be great. Cheers all!

Reg got you covered good and proper for Sunday. Christmas-wise Edinburgh dumps on Glasgow from a great height, annoyingly. It's got that whole fairytale wonderland thing down quite well. For the quintessential festive market experience wander up George St towards the train station in the evening, take in the markets around St Andrews Square and on Princes St beside the Scott Monument. Have a Glüehwein with a shot of Amaretto in it; in the background the castle and gardens are spectacular when they're lit up at night.

Glasgow's got less of a Christmassy vibe at the moment but there's still plenty worth seeing. From where you're staying Gav's spot on to suggest West bar, just down Clyde Street and across the Glasgow Green. As a building it's difficult to miss. I'd suggest wandering through the park, check out the People's Palace for beasty history on Glasgow's socialist/activist roots, then a drink and some lunch up at West. As suggested above take a wander down to the West End in the afternoon/evening. Usually I'd suggest walking but you're best hopping on the tube at St Enoch and alighting at Kelvinbridge or Hillhead. Walk up through Kelvingrove Park to take in the Kelvingrove Museum- even if just from the outside. Stroll up the hill to the University for some of the most spectacular views of the city. And from there it's a short hop to Byres Rd, where all the wilting wee West Enders like myself congregate. At the top of the road lies the beautiful Botanic Gardens, where I spent most of my childhood breaking bones and hunting frogs. Loads of cool shops and bars to be found on Byres Rd itself; particular recommendations on the latter are Three Judges for old skool pub experience, Brel for pricey but nicey (and good mussels), and the Ubiquitous Chip just across the lane for a glimpse of Glasgow's artistic illuminati doing what they do best (drinking). Ashton Lane itself is a nice wee spot overall, especially when it's not crawling with students. You won't be able to avoid noticing the Oran Mor at the top of the street. Converted church makes for a spectacular drinking location, and the food's not bad, but there are better places nearby. It's not dubbed 'Oran NAW' in my family for nowt.

Other scattered food and bar recommendations abound as I try to pass myself off as some kind of West Coast Reg.

Squid and Whale- For good beers and BURRITOS
Inn Deep- For riverside craft beer drinking and DOGS
The Belle- For being one of the only bars in the city with NO TV
Stravaigan- For good Scottish grub and amazing BREAKFAST
The Doublet- For old Glasgow drinking and MY DAD
Hanoi Bike Shop- Cheap, tasty, and VIETNAMESE
Bread Meats Bread- Best burgers and BACON CHIPS
Grosvenor Cafe- Striking building, and the only bar in the city that BANNED KAZ
CCA- Great veggie food, drinks, and you're surrounded by ARTISTS
The 78- More craft beer plus tasty VEGAN FOOD
Kelvingrove Cafe- Great cocktails, including the city's best AMARETTO SOUR
Butchershop Bar + Grill- Great steak, absolutely lethal cocktails, but more importantly MY DAD (again)

Plenty more I can't think of just yet because I have to go to work. Above all, as Gav says, if you have the time do give us a shout. Not much makes me happier than meeting folk coming to the city for the first time, and it feels like too long since we've met up with folk off here especially.
  • Kaz owned it there.
  • Awesome, thanks Kaz.

    God bless this place.

Squid and Whale is Mexican food to the nth degree, and Hanoi I believe won the List's best new bar this year.

I was really wasted in the CCA a couple of months ago and loved it.
  • It's my Film Festival wasted location of choice, closing gala parties there are always incredible. February can't come soon enough.

This has also convinced me to hit Hanoi before cinema for dinner tonight so RESULT.
