On a side note, I bought the film digitally via amazon, with the 'bonus material' version...but i'm not sure it contains all of it. I found it a faff to access the deleted scenes and stuff, and haven't found the making of docs or the director's commentary...

This is why I still buy things I really like on disc. It should be easy to do this well digitally. They can't be arsed?
  • it would seem that way.
when watched via the ps4, there are no menus or anything...it's just a 5 hour something video file, with the deleted scenes and stuff playing straight after the film...doesn't even seem to be chapters to skip.
via a PC and web browser, you can use their 'xray' nonsense to pull up the deleted scenes and a couple of special features a bit easier in the 'bonus content'...but then they seemed to play in a smaller window, and the documentaries and other stuff are missing....
actually, i've just found the documentary stuff on the web version...they're not in the bonus content but are listed as scenes after the film, so hopefully it is all there.

Nah the 24 hour shit diner.
  • Having watched TLJ for a second time, I can safely say that it is an objectively good film.

It’s an over long, heartless, contrary, wasteful, unfunny mess which has put me off The Star Wars but that’s just my opinion man.

However it was also well executed, with great performances from the actors, and a few great moments that all hinted that this had the potential to be awesome, which just makes the whole thing harder to bear.

I saw nothing redeeming in it at all. That's the last Star Wars film I watch, no interest at all anymore.
  • It actually surprised me how much I hated it, I've not really bothered about this stuff for years and can usually enjoy a train wreck. It's got me worried that I'm going to start commenting on Youtube in caps lock.

It makes TFA worse because it confirms JJ Abrams or Disney were winging it. It's starting to make me think that Rogue One was a masterpiece and I'd be the first to admit the script for that is a disjointed mess. It makes the prequels look better, good would be going too far.

I don't think anything could make the prequels look better. Because of all the ropy cgi they actually look even worse with the passing of time.

I disagree about TFA, which had an extremely difficult job to pull off. It needed to be a bridge between the old and new and all things considered I think it did it very, very well.
TLJ actually improves my outlook on TFA because TLJ got it so badly wrong.  TFA supplied some great new characters and locations that fit right in with the original trilogy IMO.
It surprised me though that JJ just set up a story and didn't have (or wasnt allowed pursue) an overall arch in mind. That Disney handed the second movie to someone else entirely was odd.
TLJ fucked up so badly....Just look at Jakku. ANOTHER desert world, but one that felt totally different to Tattooine and riddled with its own sense of awe and mystery. TFA also set up Ach To. Another wonderful concept for a planet. But look at how badly TLJ fucked up Canto Bight. This was meant to be space Monaco? It looked dull as dishwasher and was memorable only for how bland it was. Crait I'll admit looked pretty cool though. But there was no life to it, no proper sense of it being an actual place.

I agree with this. I also agree with some of what SuperFly is saying about TFA doing a good job about bridging old and new etc., but for me it also has a lot of issues that I was prepared to let slide on the assumption/hope it was setting up the next parts of the story.
TLJ makes it clear there was no real larger story planned, and indeed TLJ ignores or actively changes a lot of the interesting stuff set up in TFA. For me that then makes TFA look like a much more cynical and calculated 'rewrite' of the original, rather than a 'well intentioned' blending of old and new to get everyone on board for a new adventure.

I think it was a mistake to have TFA directly lead into the events of TLJ because the lack of a time gap seemed to impact the ability of the story to move forward. I think both films have to claim some responsibility for that, TFA for ending on a cliffhanger and TLJ for picking it up and not fucking it off in the opening crawl. A lot of TLJ's flaws are its own but I think in terms of not being wheel-spinny it was inadvertently handed a bad hand by TFA.

Last Jedi was OK - had some high points but plenty of senseless ones too. Looks great as expected. Thing is it left the story in a place where I didn't see where it was going unless the next one leaps ahead a few decades. I'll see it out but interest has halved with each one I've seen.

It would be great if someone could do a proper edit on it, remove casinoworld, reduce Poe's / Dearn's stuff as much as possible and just focus on Luke/Rey/Kylo. It'd probably only be about 45 mins long, but would be a better film for it.

    *Disclaimer - I don't hate TLJ

And @Superfly was pretty spot on with the TFA comments.
  • Next one should be The Old Republic.
  • The big issue with TLJ is Poe Dameron, or what they did with him in it.
I am totally convinced his story was different and Disney changed it for two reasons.
1.They chickened out on doing/not doing a gay romance.
    2. They wanted to get in an Asian actor in a support role.

What I believe would have happened.
The film would have started in the same way with the Resistance losing the battle. However Poe wouldn't have disobeyed orders, the guilt would still be with him though and he would have gone with Finn.

This whole sub-plot would now work to develop Poe and Finn's relationship as friends or possibly more.

We also lose the mutiny plot which was pointless and went nowhere anyway.

With their best pilot gone it would make more sense to use a desperate tactic of crashing the ship.

Now we have the best pilot in the galaxy in the casino world rather than an annoying fan girl it opens up possibilities beyond awful looking cat horses.
Poe ends up in a pod-race betting his life as a slave for the freedom of Del Toro (mirroring Ep 1). They use the Pod-Race as a means of escape somehow.

The Pod-Race would tie this section of the film to the series better, currently you could chop that section out of the film and it could be from anything.

Poe uses his flying skills and connection to Finn to force Finn not to do a suicide run as Rose did but in a way that makes much more sense.

They maybe are about to kiss and something blows up.
