Can't be bothered to find the betting thread so it's going here. Every week one of us puts a £20 quid bet on with the accepted odds to make it worth our while usually being around 10/1 so we get £200 back on a (rare) winner.

Now I've just put a seven team acca on some favourites, and I'm getting shrugs and "more can go wrong" shite on the WhatsApp group. Like, they're going to be happier if I lump on a single game on the outsiders at 10/1? The odds you'd get for Newcastle to beat City at the Etihad or something?

Haven't they both got the same chance of coming in anyway? Or am I missing something here?

Yes, you accumulate up the house (book) edge, so it can be much worse. It depends like. I can't be arsed to do you the maths.

'more can go wrong' is a fallacy of course.

But it explains why Fred Done can afford to offer them bonuses.

There’s been loads of analysis of bookies odds, and generally they’re a pretty good reflection of the actually probability, with a slight adjustment for their profit. So yeah, a 10/1 single would have pretty much exactly the same chance of happening as a 10/1 multiple. But as workid says, the house edge will accumulate as well so there’s less value.

If you want actual value then do one of the bets that has a refund if one leg lets you down.

  • I'd definitely rather have an acca than backing some no hopers at 10/1. That's probably longer than Newcastle beating City.
  • If there's a 5% overround on a single, then there's a 50% overround on a ten leg acca. The maths isn't quite like that (it's actually worse) but it gives you an idea why bookies love the accas.
  • Oddsmonkey has an acca matcher which finds the closest odds to the exchange prices to reduce the overround thing. I’ve made a good bit of cash by combining that with William H’s refund if one leg lets you down offer.
