Oh also I forgot to say - I promised Liv he would win this quiz, even though he got none of the questions right, technically speaking.

You can't ask Liv to do everything

getting the questions right was your job, all he had to do was get the answers right
"I spent years thinking Yorke was legit Downs-ish disabled and could only achieve lucidity through song" - Mr B
  • Hello Badgers. As you all know, I'm a big fan of all these quizzes. I have read every thread five times and the only reason I didn't take part is because I wanted to give others a chance at winning. But it's time. It's time for a real quiz. A real man's quiz. It's tricksy and devious. It has been years in the making, mulling over, and like the One Ring, it has absorbed its creators utter cuntishness. For this reason: 7 hidden bonus points are available, taking the total to at least 20.

    1. In what year was a British Prime Minister last assassinated.(closest answer gets point if no one gets it). Extra point for his full name.

Spencer Perceval was shot in the steps of Parliament by some dude whose name I forgot, in 1812. This info I somehow retained from A level, it came up in a pub quiz, and I pulled a bird in my team later, I am sure, 100% because of this. Credit to cinty for getting this answer right, missing out on the extra point by going for the more common spelling "Percival". When the girl wrote it down asking how I knew that, btw, I just smiled, told her "Percival with an e" and winked.
    Spoiler:

2.Riddle me this. I am African. I got world-famous in the last decade. I am absolute aids. Gman hates me.

oh dear. This was an easy one. Everyone assumed it was a person I was after. Had they asked themselves, what thing which is absolute aids emerged from Africa on or after 2010... They'd have immediately shouted "VUVUZELA". HELLO G MAN

    3. What word links the Persian savant Al Khawarizmi and begging for YouTube likes?

AL KHAWARIZMI, AFTER WHOSE WORK ALGEBRA IS named, came up with techniques for solving algebraic problems systematically. Ever complete the square in an differential equation? Thank Al Khawarizmi. These things - techniques that do notbworknout solutions for themselves, are called algorithms

    4. It's 1998 and the future world chanpions win their first game. Complete the starting forward line:
Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane, Youri Djorkaeff,...?

Stéphane Guivar'ch remains, surely, to this day, the worst striker who performed the worst in a world cup winning team. Utter dunce

    5. Name the team that Zidane scored a world cup equalising goal against.

this is the real killer, the one on the tip of every tongue and surely, on Davyk's tongue most of all Many said Italy, some Spain, others whatever. Of course, Zinedine Zidane has in fact, never ever scored a world cup equalising goal. He did it in the euros (against england I think).... But never in the world cup.

Now let's just slow roll Davyk. The correct answer is of course:.
    Spoiler:

    6. What is the highest five figure palindromic number, which is a multiple of 45?

I asked for working in case this one is googlable. All multiples of 45 end in 0 or 5. So most people start with 5xxx5. Simply start with the lowest multiple of 45 over 60000 and work backwards. The correct answer is 59895.

I realised this after it came up in a real quiz. Again, I had a girl I quite fancy in my team. (And I packed two viagras this time). I decided to show her my worth by doing this question, which stumped everyone. It took two pages worth of working, I missed all the other questions in the round, and when the answers were announced I'd come up with the wrong answer. "I thought you spent ages getting it right", she asked accusingly." I snorted and said "FML I think I've forgotten how to do long division."

I went home and had a wank

    7. In what year did Edge magazine abandon the square brackets in review scores?

Bit of a punt this one. I assumed you dorks knew, but guesses varied wildly. But reg answered the question and said 2006 so I'm gonna say it was 2006 cos this is the kind of shit he knows about.

    8. "Let’s split up, look for any survivors and get out of here!" - name the entertainment media this quote occurs in.

Leon said this, in Resident Evil 2. You might remember that from the zombie episode of Spaced, where Simon Pegg also says it, in a hilarious call back. 2 points there.

    9. Which European power's leader said, "If the English army should land, then I shall have them arrested".

Ooh, harsh one this. I think someone correctly said that the Chancellor of Prussia, Count Von Bismarck,. Said this, in a brilliant joke about the size of the British army compared to its own domestic security forces. But it wasn't him I was after, it was Prussia. And no, Germany is not correct.

    10. Fill in the blank: "____ is to Addington what London is to Paddington".

No one got this so the point goes to Div who - unlike others who did apply symmetry to suggest "Plondon", just lazily said Pondon which makes no sense but made me laugh out loud. That said, the correct answer is:.
    Spoiler:
Point also goes to Reg, who wrote "Pfft" and was therefore closest to the correct answer, particularly as I am dyslexic

    11.

"Freedom is always the freedom of dissenters."

"You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club."

"I get half a million just to show up at parties. My life is, like, really, really fun."

What do the people who said these things have in common? Show your working.
    Spoiler:
Unlucky JB who guessed country after recognising Rosa Luxemburg. Reg, unsurprisingly, recognised the Paris Hilton one.

    12. What is the modern name of the city to which the capital of the Roman empire moved, and where Constantine the great issued an edict calling for racial tolerance, paving the way for Christianity to become the religion of the Roman empire.
A most devious one this, I had high hopes but once again the country's public schools ruined my fun. Known as mediosummat, the northern Italian city was the first capital other than Rome. The capital did move to Ravenna, before moving to Constantinople (which is of course now known as Istanbul. But I threw Constantine in there to throw you of the track. Mediowhatsitsface is now known as
    Spoiler:

Where the edict on religious tolerance was laid down.

    13. What links Super Mario Bros' and the recent General election results?

They were both released on Friday 13th. The number of the question was a clue.

Scoring time.... To follow. But the winner is Livdiv. Cinty probably got the most answers right though.

  • Congratulations Div, officially the smartest man in the forum, although I am the real winner in this everyone will admit.

  • Congrats Div.

And congrats to Gonzo for being so, so smart.

Was a very good quiz that. Some working out questions as well as factual ones. The historic ones were interesting and I'll probably remember them - well - some of them.

And eff me for knowing about the NI footie question.

Re the maths one, once you realise that the number being a multiple of 45 must end in 5 or 0  ,you then know it begins and ends with a 5 because it's 5 digits and palindromic. So 5xxx5.  Then because it asks for the highest number you start with 59x95 and work down - the 2nd one you try is the answer. A well crafted question that.

I'm poor at history - never liked as a kid though I like it now - have started reading about the Crusades.. I do like mathematical history though which is why I got the algorithm one.

  • Correction: Ace got the Rome question wrong, fell into the trap despite his 30k a year private education and said Istanbul /Constantinople. It was state school educated farm boy cinty who got Milan right. Kudos. He smashed this quiz with 4 points, double his closest rival. Liv's 0.5 points (resident Evil) give him the win though. Congratulations again Liv!

  • The only one I would’ve got is algorithm, if I didn’t think it was some trick question cos of mention of Youtube or something.

I would’ve said Trezeguet instead of Guivarch.

    I would’ve said Istanbul too.

Quiz is way beyond my abilities.

I reckoned Constantinople was too obvious and also reckoned they wouldn't have moved that far.

So I submitted nothing for that one.
