Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • Cool, subbed.

Thank you. That's very kind of you. We have a lot of interviews from the industry now and some of the big hitters from kickstarter as well.
I appreciate you giving us a listen

Some family gaming tonight. Finally got New York Slice to the table which is a perfect in law friendly game, and requires a fair bit more thinking than I expected. Really good fun and super simple.

It also wins the award for bestest components, packaging and even rulebook.

I am biased by my love of pizza though, and it made me hungry while playing it.

Also played a few games of Raptor with my brother in law and we both loved it. It's quite tense trying to out guess your opponent.

Seems the Raptors have less chance of winning the longer the game goes on and the scientists need to keep at least a few tranq darts on mummy raptor to limit her actions otherwise she runs riot gobbling them up ridiculously easily. I'm a big fan of this game already.

Bought some of the miniatures needed to make my Nurgle Blood Bowl team today. I was torn between using zombies or Plaguebearers as the Rotters (linemen). In the end I went for Crypt Ghouls; one of the benefits of browsing a brick-n-mortar store. The Plaguebearers will be used as Pestigors (Blitzers), and I bought some Nurglings to use as Cheerleaders. :)

Up next: Blightkings as Bloaters, and something that can be a Rotspawn (probably a Beast of Nurgle)...

A few years ago my bro and sis in law used to take the piss out of me for going to a boardgame club. Now look. I have successfully brainwashed them.

Raptor looks great, added that to my wishlist.

Going on holiday with the lady and a couple of friends next month, just renting a cottage so looking for some recommendations for 4 player games. Preferably stuff that can be picked relatively easily and isn't too bulky. Bonus points if playing tipsy adds to the fun.
  • Some small card games that work really well are Love Letter, Skull, Codenames, Coup, Resistance (might need 5 to really shine) are excellent, but if you want plain laughs then Spyfall, Monikers, Funemployed ,and Cash n Guns (again, 5 likely preferable).

For actual games, Welcome to the Dungeon, Samurai Spirit, and Sushi GO! Party are all super cheap and really good games for small groups that are a mix of competitive and co-op.

For something a little bulkier, Mysterium is incredible for people who don't want to fuss with learning lots of rules: it's parlour style magic waiting to happen out of the box, as is Sherlock Holmes which is a little slimmer and if you all like a bit of collaborative mystery solving its yer go to.
  • Resistance needs five as a minimum!
  • Aha, correct.
  • I'm waiting to try mafia de Cuba (min six tho').

If you can get a copy insider (by oink) is really really good and really really small.

King of Tokyo is also good (don't bother with the expansions tbh)

Also get 6 nimmt as it's great and small.
  • I've also heard that Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is the new darling of the world but it says 4-12 so I dunno how it scales:

  • What's the one where you are in a boat (lifeboat perhaps) where you are given a person to love and hate in a life boat (secretly) and then engineer for them to stay on the boat or lob them off.

I'd get this but it's like a 30 quid game and relatively big for a pub.

One night revolutiOn might be good (that's 3+)

@Tempy Cheers, man! That's a great list. Picked up Monikers and Samurai Spirit to begin with at least. A couple more lingering in the basket.

Also reminded me I have Love Letter somewhere so must dig that out too.

Never played Hearts but a quick Google suggests that it's a trick taking game, which 6 Nimmt isn't. It's dead simple and scales by player count brilliantly. We've played it with up to about 8 or 9 iirc.

It's a great easy to teach quick game. Top tip: Get the German version on Amazon as it's cheaper than the English version and you can get the rules easily enough online.

Took it on Holiday and played it with the family we met up with from the year before. First thing they did upon returning home was buy that, Carcassonne and Lost Cities as I'd taken those too.

Happened to play this at the weekend with four of us and it was great fun. Very quick games due to there only being four of us but it led to some great comedy and arguments, I could certainly see that it would be amazing in a larger group.

Sherrif of Nottingham would be a good 4-player deception style game and Junk Art is just wonderful, although they are slightly bigger and bulkier games.

Gamertag: aaroncupboard (like the room where you keep towels)
  • I'd second both Codenames and Skull.   Pretty much both staples in my household now if we're wanting games to take on holiday.  (Also agree Mysterium's fantastic, but it's pretty bulky.)  It's worth saying that Skull can be fairly easily played with beer mats if you don't want to spend the money - though it's a very very lovely set (and you can get some weird looks going round the pub gathering identical beer mats).

Whilst I'm not a massive fan, a lot of friends seem to like Red7 (2-4 players) - it's kind of glorified Uno, but gets quite strategic if you move onto the advanced rules, whilst still retaining a level of luck to keep idiots like me in with a chance.   There's a Print and Play version here, if you don't mind your printer hating you forever.

Equally if you want a Co-Op card game there's Hanabi.  I'm yet to play this game without someone cheating, but it's a simple, eminently portable game of deduction for up to 5 players.
  • Hanabi feels like a classic set up for an upturned table game.

Also the other new darling is magic maze.
  • I've been heading this way for a while now but I've now gone full nerd - Community + The Adventure Zone + Critical Role + Newfound CRPG obsession = I really wanna play D&D.
  • Ive always wanted to give it a go. Play By Forum is kind popular these days but I doubt it'd fly here due to the irresistible nature of people wanting to post and the fact that getting people to use discord for communication would be a nightmare.

As a positive, the d&d starters are very good these days, TAZ started with a campaign from that.
  • Kingdomino is a really really good game.

Pop round, I've Pathfinder campaigns ready to go at the drop of a hat :)

Cyberpunk 2020 was always my favourite when younger, brilliant system. Have so many vivid memories of stuff that happened in our campaigns.
