Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?

I enjoyed Caesar! a fair amount. It's not as good as Blitzkrieg but definitely worth a game. It's pretty quick and short to play

Cue 6 months time and Tiger is sat in a magic focused shop/shithole (probably in Wigan as there's about 800) that smells of teenage boy sweat mixed with Lynx Africa.

    It's a slippery slope lad.

I sold 2 shoe boxes full of first edition MTG cards years ago for an absolute fortune. Probably could have got more if I'd taken the time to sort them out, but I was 18 or 19 and wanted money to go out clubbing. Paid for several weekends iirc.

Like all my Star Wars toys, I bitterly regret getting rid.
  • Those clubbing days though…

I recently sold all my cards. Made about a month's salary. It's a fun game, but fuck it. Too much time, too much money.

  • Managed to arrange to play some games in person tonight for the first time in two years with people who aren't my family. Going to play some Wildlands, maybe Cubitos, Blitzkrieg. Got a fair pile to get through.

  • Is Cubitos as awesome as it looks rev?

Played Air Land and Sea with Dad again today. Finally sussed the withdraw stuff and when was a good time to bail on rounds. Made for a cracking game. Won it right at the end, but it was 12-10.

Picked up Flamme Rouge today too. Dad loves the cycling. Really well thought out. Easy teach, lots of ebs and flows. Can't wait to try it a bit more and understand the tactics a bit more.

Can't remember if I asked about Tichu? Picked it up last week too. Looks to be a cracker traditional bridge style thing that is massive in China. Anyone ever played?
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Cubitos is a duffer imo. To me it’s too isolated and staccato to feel like a decent race.

Been playing some Marvel United with Elliot. Its waaaay too simple for your hard-core gamers, but we've been having fun. I've basically been letting him be the leader. He loves it.

You can rattle through a game in 20 minutes so that bumps it up a bit more in my eyes. $26 delivered from Amazon US. I might grab the Xmen box while it's cheap.

Is it pretty easy to pick up? I keep feeling tempted to get it but convincing people to play board games with me is a chore.

You can teach it in minutes.
  • Yeah, it's very very easy to teach.

Although I have to say that onitama beats it just on teach.

It has a fantastic hook, and within a couple of turns folks see the head scratchy fun.

Air land and sea has a more exciting flow overall though, especially when you get to know when you're cooked and start withdrawing to save points.

(there's a 6 minute dev walk through on youtube. And that really says it all about the teach. It basically covers everything.)
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • I do need one clarification with air land and sea.

The card that destroys facedown cards when they're played.

Does being flipped count as being "played"?

So that card is down, and I have a face up card in play. It gets flipped to facedown. Does that count as played?

I don't think it does, but I just want to be sure.

Daughter taught me basic Mancala today. Intriguing game. Have had a set sitting about for years. She learned how to play from the Switch 50 games cart.

  • Mega 2 days of games.

Got to do proper air land and sea with some guy. He nails the tactics first time. I lost two games, but damn they were immense.

Did a few cards from one of the onitama expansions. Still great. Won a cracking game where I was at a numbers disadvantage for most of it by getting my guy to his temple.

Some more flamme rouge as well. Still solid. Still unsure on the luck vs tactics ratio.

Today we did my first 4 player Everdell and realised I'd messed up multiple rules previously. Great game again.

Got to give the crew mission deep sea a very quick Test as well. Can see why it gets love already.

Then finished with our first 3 player war of whispers. Still amazing.

It's fine but like all games like this it needs multiple plays to begin to experience what it offers and for some people that maybe three plays too much?

  • Been playing loads of games over the Easter holidays, many old favourites and some new ones.

Couple of games of Azul, the stained glass version and oh my what a beautiful, beautiful game. Also, immensely frustrating but in the best possible way. I was really impressed by it.

Also finally got Everdell to the table for the first time. Just a two player game and we both struggled a little at first before it clicked. When it clicked I found it to be an exceptionally clever game and a joy to play. The art style is sumptuous, the tree is pointless really but awesome and I loved how the cards started to link and flow as the game went on.

Also had a mad splurge and decided to get Wonderland Wars…it arrives to tomorrow and I can’t wait.

  • I’m really tempted by wonderland war.
  • Played a bunch of Warhammer at the weekend, including against our very own Roujin!

I am very glad that all the people in the Discord community I am part of the kind of people who are painting lovely armies. There's nothing quite like throwing down with two immaculate forces.
  • Awesome photos.

it has been a while since I played 40k but that Dreadnought is about to get minced, right?

Tome Keepers, created by White Dwarf editor Lyle, so they get lots of fancy lore and even transfer sheets.

I beat him because he demanded to face my biggest dudes and they got all big over him. And thanks, I do love a cardigan!

Nice. I really dig the paint scheme. Deathwing-esque, and as we all know, first legion best legion.

Playing ALOT of (Advanced) Song of Blades and Heroes (and Mutants and Death Ray Guns, same ruleset) of late. Missed it over lockdown. Really is the best miniatures wargame I've played. Cuts out all the bullshit and just gets on with it, it's so elegant. We can do a full campaign of 4/5 games in one evening.

We have so many warbands between us now that we just randomise who is facing off. Makes for some cool battles and eliminates min/maxing.
