Out of curiosity, I’ve been looking for other movies with background reading but there aren’t many aside from the now-common prequel comic for comic book adaptions. Does feel like Southland Tales was very one-of-a-kind in that regard.

My Blu ray hasn't arrived yet and to join in the simultaneous watch I would have had to be up at 5am.
Soooo, hopefully my copy will arrive in the next day or so and I can watch and then read through your thoughts on it.
It strikes me that they forced The Rock to have a bunch of fake religious tattoos whenever he takes his shirt off but the plot point relating to why he has them from the comics goes absolutely nowhere.

Didn't participate - timing always gonna be a bugger for me on things like this, but I just wanna say that I have been reading (and enjoying) this thread. Keep it up, peeps.
I did Waterworld in a lockdown film chat group. Would strongly suggest resisting the urge to go for the extended cut; it's bobbins and adds nothing but tedium.
I've been eyeing up some 1995 Waterworld action figures.
They are nearly all mint on card, rare to see any out of the packaging, cheap as well comparatively.
Says a lot about the popularity of Waterworld at the time. I don't even remember seeing the line here, might not have made it out of the States.
Always quite liked the film though, its decent Sunday afternoon fluff and always seemed to be on, presumably because it was cheap for the TV channels to pick up.
Researching future films, a post-Matrix Wachowski film seems appropriate but it’s a toss up between Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending. Anyone have any preferences or insights?

I have Cloud Atlas already and wouldn't mind a re-watch (I also have the eBook, which I haven't read yet but may try to if chosen though it is around 500 pages long...), but I generally remember enjoying it at the cinema so Jupiter Ascending would seem far more appropriate.
Waterworld is a stone cold classic of the era, love that film but I was definitely the right age for it, where every new film seemed like it'd be the biggest thing ever.
Speed Racer is an assault on the eyes.
Some people love it but while I can respect the technically ability in the fx I'm not a fan.
Not sure how well it would work for this thread, there's not much to comment on during and there's a chance your retinas will be bleeding too much to type.
I've seen all of the above. If I was to be thinking about the biggest pop it would 100% be Jupiter Ascending. That movie is on a wavelength similar to Southland.
