Netflix’s 4K and HDR implementation is great to these old eyes. Brightness levels on their own originals is great.
    Things can only get better.

Oho, Netflix doesn't miss a trick. It knows I've got a new TV and is offering the 4K streaming service for an extra £2 a month. I nearly clicked yes even though we've only got an 8Mb ADSL connection.

Yeah I did that. Can't really notice the difference personally.

  • Dolby Vision on a couple of their shows it fantastic. Does take a bit of getting used to when something is just black and not dark, if that makes sense.
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
  • Clooney's Catch 22 series seems to be getting good reviews.

Part 1 of Chernobyl down. Utterly terrifying, and excellent.

  • I thought the first five minutes of Chernobyl were a bit ponderous in that prestige drama way, but the rest was excellent. That inspirational speech as well.
  • The wife's been saying we should watch The Walking Dead for a while. I've always resisted, partly having read how bad it gets on here, and partly because I just can't be arsed with a 100+ episodes of zombies.

But this week they dumped 8 seasons on Netflix so I reluctantly agreed to go through the first season at least, knowing it was only 6 episodes.

And it's done, and now I'm bailing out. It was already getting a bit stupid anyway and there's no appeal for me in watching people getting chunks bitten of them over and over. It's not like there's a huge amount of scope with the whole zombie concept.

The wife's going to carry on alone. Be interesting to see how far she gets.

Hah, it starts out pretty decent. It gets really bad. By the time you're rooting for the zombies, it's time to bail out.
  • The first season is the best of it.
I think I did 4 seasons, bailing early into the fifth, should have bailed earlier than that.

I've watched one episode so I think I'm winning?
  • I got through most of season one I think. Stopped over something to do with an old people's home, maybe. Pretty sure the wife lasted another three or four seasons, and still claims that she intends to continue.

Yeah, the pilot is class. I've not caught up with the second half of the latest series, cheers for the reminder.

Speaking of absolutely top drawer tv, I wonder how Gremill is getting on with Nightflyers?

Really enjoyed first ep. Just gets straight into it, no faffing. Hopefully they'll go back to before the incident and review the shit show that went before the explosion. Guardian review complains of it being overly confusing, I think the reviewer has kind of missed the point!

I managed seven seasons of The Walking Dead.  I thought the first four were pretty decent.  The slide begins with season five, and by seven I fucking hated it.
    Get schwifty.
  • I gave up during season five.

  • Playing Days Gone makes we want to start watching The Walking Dead again. I think I left it around the end of season 5? When the zombie horde crashes through the walls of that town run by Katherine Janeway's long lost sister?

  • So, VPN talk, anyone using expressvpn? I've signed up and it seems to allow chromecast work around, but it's not behaving very well.

Watched the first episode, which was really quite good. Looking forward to seeing how great the rest of it is.

VPN works if I just watch whatever on laptop. Can access us Netflix, switch to UK and get BBC.

Laptop and chromecast are both on correct network (ie mobile hotspot is virtual router)

Laptop/Chrome can see chromecast and I can connect and get screen to say "ready to cast" in whatever app, but it freezes/hangs when loading.

  • I am also watching The Expanse - it's quite good, although I did spend the second episode wondering where the cockney psychic had gone.

Is the internet connection that the chromecast is on with the virtual router (I'm not sure what one of those is) also running through the Vpn?

I was under the impression that chromecast doesn't stream the content from the device, but takes the link and access credentials and access and streams the content directly. It might be that the chromecast is hitting the region block that the device isn't?
