Which is kinda why I've never really bothered with online multiplayer stuff - I don't have the time to commit to becoming decent enough to hold my own. Despite this, I did enjoy simply not coming last in the trials tournament!
I've not gamed that much recently due to Things Happening, but just being with some of the guys from here yesterday and today, talking about games, browsing collections and car boot sales, talking about games and how and why we bought a particular one, and also of course buying games, has really lit a spark in me somewhere. Gonna get some consoles set up and get to it.
A well designed set of game mechanics with a bit of depth (a Dark Souls or a Fire Emblem) can still absorb me as much as ever and eat up some hours. It's thinking, but not hard thinking, which is sometimes nice. In that sense I can get as much out of an old game as much as a new one.
Other than that the odd game grabs me because it does something different. Either it's especially original or imaginative in some way, or it manages to form a smart story that fits in with the gameplay. It gets me thinking about it in some other way than just how to beat it. That's rare, however, and I can't think of that many examples, but it's probably the main reason I'm still interested in following new games.
Marking essays makes me want to kill things. Video games allow me to legitimately do that. More seriously, I find that the concentration levels involved in games makes me far more immersed in the fiction than tv, film, of literature.

I'll just add that following a tough or stressful day, coming home and kicking the crap out of someone on Dead or Alive for example, even just the cpu, really is quite therapeutic.
This is the reason. I'll just add that following a tough or stressful day, coming home and kicking the crap out of someone on Dead or Alive for example, even just the cpu, really is quite therapeutic.
