  • A song that rarely fails to get me a touch misty eyed:

From This One's For Him - A Tribute To Guy Clark, which is probably the best tribute album I've ever heard.  Townes Van Zandt's son performs an excellent version of one of my favourite Guy Clark tracks.

Well, he was wino, tried and true.
Done about everything there is to do.
He worked on freighters, an' he'd worked in bars.
He worked on farms, an' he'd worked on cars.
It was white port that put that look in his eye,
Grown men get when they need to cry.
We sat down on the curb to rest,
And his head just fell down on his chest.

He says: "Every single day it gets,
"Just a little bit harder to handle and yet. . ."
Then he lost the thread and his mind got cluttered,
And the words just rolled off down the gutter.

Well, he was elevator man in a cheap hotel,
In exchange for the rent on a one room cell.

An' he's old: years beyond his time,
No thanks to the world, and the white port wine.

So he said: "Son." He always called me son.
Said: "Life for you has just begun."
An' then he told me the story I'd heard before
How he fell in love with a Dallas whore.

Now, he could cut through the years to the very night,
When it ended in a whore house fight.
And she turned his last proposal down,
In favor of being a girl about town.

Now it's been seventeen years, right in line,
He ain't been straight in none of the time.
It's too many days of fightin' the weather,
An' too many nights of not being together.

    So he died.

    Instrumental break.

An' when they went through his personal effects,
In among the stubs from the welfare checks,
Was a crumblin' picture of a girl in a door,
And an address in Dallas and nothing more.

An' the welfare people provided the priest,
A couple from the mission down the street,
Sang "Amazing Grace", and no one cried,
'Cept some lady in black, way off to the side.

We all left and she's standing there,
A black veil covering her silver hair.
Ol' One-Eyed John said her name was Alice,

An' she used to be a whore in Dallas.

So let him roar, Lord, let him roll.
I bet he's gone to Dallas, rest his soul.
Just you let him roll, Lord, let him roar
    He always said that heaven
    Was just a Dallas whore.

Just you let him roar, Lord, let him roll.
I bet he's gone to Dallas, rest his soul.

Martin Rosen was so intent on creating a bleak film he changed the positive ending from an already distressing novel and left thousands of wide-eyed children with.....this.

Edit: Petey's video just fucking destroyed me.  I wish I hadn't clicked on it, or at least had the willpower to cut it short.

  • Can't recall ever crying at a film, perhaps because i never watch them. My Mum likes to remind me that i apparently cried when the shark died in Jaws (yes i was well below the recommended age), but i don't remember it.

I do have some vague memory of crying when a penguin died in some nature documentary. Again, i was very young.

I remember like it was yesterday being about 5 and watching a black and white King Kong film. At one point a younger ape dies. I walked up to my mum (who was doing the ironing), bottom lip trembling, and asked if it was OK to cry. She said it was. I blurted my eyes out for ten minutes.

I think Armageddon is a guilty pleasure of many more than who own up to the fact. The main father/daughter goodbye bit is bad enough - but when the relationship between the kid and estranged father is resolved it's even worse.

and if that don't get you Steven Tyler will push you over the edge with that song.

I can get quite tearful with a movie, most have been mentioned here but one that got me recently was a scene in Krammer vs Krammer where the son has to go back to his Mum after being with his Dad.

Back to the topic at hand a documentary called The Last Tommy destroyed me a couple of years back and the end of Blackadder Goes Forth gets me.

Jesus - that's a laugh a minute that one - you know the old caper - coming of age film about a kid who witnesses ethnic cleansing up close....

Only watched that once - had forgot about it - must think about watching it again.
