Friends, I am looking for some country/folk/traditional tinged music that is low fidelity, crunchy and stripped back, preferably with a banjo involved. Any recs to throw my way, please do so!
"Given how long it's taken for me to reconcile my nature, I can't figure I'd forgo it on your account."
For non-banjo stripped back, I still love Blaze Foley, probably more 'Americana' than Country at times, but he has all the ingredients I love (highly rated amongst peers, never got wide fame, died early):
There are a few decent bluegrass bands pop up every year but few survive. Greenland Is Melting might turn you on, or if you wanna go a bit (lot) heavier then The Goddamn Gallows have never let me down, maybe Arliss Nancy, or Vandoliers might be worth a look as less bluegrass but more at the folky end of the country scene than a lot of others
"I spent years thinking Yorke was legit Downs-ish disabled and could only achieve lucidity through song" - Mr B
Billy Strings was my fave discovery (not that he's new) last month or so, a great blue grass sound to some of his stuff - in fact fuck it I'll just link that same vid again:
Glasgow show is part of "Celtic Connections" the quarter-long festival in town, and I got an email not too long ago saying the support has been cancelled and that the doors will open at 9pm with Sturg going on at half 9. Now it's a Scottish/Irish/Folk festival which lends obviously to his older stuff, but we'll see. Different sounds, different touring musicians needed. I doubt it.
Wish they'd just open at 7pm like usual and he just goes for 2hr hahah
Opened the Christy link, will have a read tonight. Was probably 7+ years ago when you recommended Live at the Point. Which is in with a shout for best live album ever.
When I saw Sturgs he did all of Sailor's Guide but found plenty of room for older stuff. I'm hoping for all of S&F followed by....anything else really. I'm definitely gonna need to see Life of Sin though.
Great article Muggins. 'As I sat looking up at the Guinness ad I could never figure out how your man stayed up on the surfboard after fourteen pints of stout' is such a wonderful line. Studio version is definitely a different beast.
I might reach for this one as peak Christy. A great choice of song, beautiful performance and a deftly delivered heckle response at the beginning:
You’re a history book I never could write, Poetry in paralysis, too deep to recite. Dress yourself, bless yourself, you’ve won the fight, We’re gonna celebrate the night.
