Lovely project, although anyone who thinks the GC pad was really the best ever needs to reacquaint themselves with the 360 one again.
Pah, GC pad is greatest of them all, closely followed by the Wii Classic Pro and the N64 pad. Special shout outs to the original Dual Shock, the SNES pad, and the 360 controller. I'm going to be all over this project like a tweenager lass on One Direction.

    Haha - nice to hear!

I was never infatuated with the 360 pad like a lot of people are, I found the triggers to be too tense (I remember almost getting carpel tunnel after playing Forza 3 over an Xmas break) and not keen on the finish or the button shape.

Haven't yet got around to owning a 360 despite owning a couple of shmups for it - so I can't comment - but I guess it may be good for trad genres such as FPS or driving - all I can say is that using the GC pad with Super Monkey Ball, Luigi's Mansion, F-Zero, Viewtiful Joe, Mario Sunshine et al is a delight. The GC pad looks odd because it is asymmetric - as are we - which is probably why it works so well. The black one looks lovely.

I like the asymmetrical thumbs. But yeah, generally shit from the off. Good idea and good core USP for a pad. Otherwise not something I can use one handed on my back nursing a brew for those /particular/ games.

  • The genius was the giant A button, however it seems the main fire button now is right shoulder/trigger. The asymmetry is genius, I mean...the Xbox pad is very similar.

@swirl, the n64 pad is and was an interesting experiment, but I think history should look at it for what it was: a stupid pad, lumbered with legacy shite to accomodate traditionalists and also hampered because it wad bespokely designed to play with Mario 64 only.
  • Ok I can confirm that the first writer contributing to the project is Ray Barnholdt (@rdbaaa)

he's an ex 1-Up writer who's part of Retronauts and now runs and creates his own online gaming history magazine called scroll.vg - he's also a very nice bloke, which certainly helps!

It certainly was an experiment, and yes - it was odd because of the whole 2D/3D transitional thing that was going on in Ninty's mind (strange to think that while they embraced 3D so successfully). I personally find it quite comfortable to use. I have never had issue with it and was always puzzled by the criticism tilted at it (which in all probabilty was from people who hardly used it). The trigger is a highlight.

Apparantly Robotron64 can be configured for two controller play - sounds odd - haven't got around to trying that.

  • Its fairly comfortable, but given the almost redundancy of the d pad one wonders how much better it would have been with the analogue swapped with the D. When people talk about the trigger though, its just the L button for the analogue stick, superficially innovative. The c buttons were a weird hybrid of proper buttons and a camera control, it just meant most multiplatform games had inferior buttons on the 64.

    Rumble pack was interesting though.

Sure the trigger was just the L button in "3D mode" but it just felt right somehow - I quickly found myself using it without thinking (drifting in F-Zero X and targetting in Zelda in particular). - and that's the point - it is so obvious once you see it but I suspect it took quite a few goes to get that right. It's actually quite satisfying to use in Doom64 as the fire button too.

The c buttons are odd - but I guess at that time the whole idea of camera control was in its infancy - its easy to forget how far things have moved along.

The dpad isn't used that much - apart from Mischief Makers and Mystical Ninja 2 there isn't much else I can think of. It's a good control option with Robotron64 when used the 4 camera buttons for moving and firing - works really well. Puzzle games use it too I suppose - Bust A Move, Tetris and co. just don't work with a stick - Even Wetrix is better with the dpad.

Rumble was great - pity they need batteries though - I wonder why it doesn't draw power from the console - maybe it was thought of after the design was locked down.

sorry......these do look lovely Dan. Dreamcast next? I kind of put GC and DC in the same broad category - consoles that knew about fun.

Haha no worries - I don't mind if this whole thing stimulates a bit of debate even if it's not directly related!

Haven't really thought about what's next - Probably won't even think about it until this ones done and dusted tbh, can be quite draining having it constantly swimming around in your head! Had a few vague ideas about what it might be, and I do like the DC!

Nah, it was epic. Worked brilliantly with Goldeneye, Zelda, Pilot Wings, the lot. Mario 64 may have had the most influence, but it was a stonking pad all around. Not having immediate access to the d-pad could be awkward, but most games managed just fine with the 'second d-pad' of the C buttons.

On the Dreamcast front, to reply to @EvilRedEye briefly, while I love the machine, the pad was hampered by a general lack of buttons, IMO. Still a lovely thing to hold, mind.

  • All but one of the writers have confirmed (and I'm just awaiting confirmation on the last one which hopefully if it comes together will be pretty unique/special) - As soon as I have permission from them to acknowledge their involvement I'll post in here.

Getting quite excited by this project now as it's not far away from materialising - I need to have a final pass on all the elements to ensure they're accurate (I noticed the Start / Pause on the pads is a smidge too high, and i think the cube itself needs slightly softer corners for example) and once we have final copy back from the writers it'll be off to the printers.

As mentioned previously going to be doing a little comp/giveaway when everything's ready - Going to be creating something else that won't be available for general sale and will be in much lower volume, I might even do a B&B forum giveaway.

Oh, and here's a Panasonic Q pad variant, just because:

That's epic. I lusted after the Panasonic Q back in the day. I wonder what the special Gameboy Player unit looks like. I bet they're rarer than hens' teeth, given that the Q didn't exactly sell like hot cakes.

Shame it's not silver like the host hardware. That was one thing that annoyed me about the GB Player, only Japan seemed to get the right colours (even an orange one), while the rest of the world got the Ford treatment; any colour you want as long as it's black

Once the prints come back from the printers we'll be getting some photos done and we will have some Gamecubes for props - ill make sure there's an appropriate amount of GC porn.

Make sure to call it "pr0n" or something so we can still view it after we're all living in Cameron's porn-free totalitarian nightmare.
