  • Weren't Railtrack largely responsible for the failure to invest in the maintenance of the rail network infrastructure (because they were too busy paying big bucks to their chiefs and worrying about their shareholders), leading to widespread problems with the running of the trains (not to mention such appalling catastrophes as the Hatfield Crash), ultimately leading to spiralling costs, huge compensation payouts, the collapse of the company and a nightmare scenario which has only in recent years begun to sort itself out, the lasting legacy of which is that we pay some of the highest (and ever rising) fares in Europe for a service which is still vastly inferior?
